Turning a broken 2009 imac into something AMAZING. Let's see if we can figure this out.

Keeping myself entertained during a mild case of the Rona by completely disassembling an Imac and turning it into an amazing 1440p external monitor for anything

Target display mode works with the 27 inch 2009 & 2010 iMac with just a Mini DisplayPort connection. If the iMac is still functional no need to use the control board kit. Any device that outputs an HDMI signal ( with an HDMI to mini display port adapter) or display port signal ( need a mini display port to display port adapter ) can use the 2009 or 2010 27 inch iMac as a display.

That’s great advice Rob! I should have mentioned that in my video. That’s what I used to do before figuring on how to do the module. I’ve enjoyed the module because I had issues with hdmi converters in the past and it was only consistent with display port computers. This way I can use it as a tv, or monitor for an Xbox. Thanks for sharing that info though I feel that’s not very common knowledge and will be useful to a lot of people.

This stop being the case if you upgrade your main mac/imac/mbp/mini to big sur unfortunately. You could use a device like luna display and use the thunderbolt to thunderbolt/usbc adapter but you will have to set up and ip connection for it work with thunderbolt. Sounds backwards and frustrating, but this is what apple has done with their new updates. This is still the case if you have catalina, and could work up to mid 2013 imac devices.

@@BULLETAWESOME That is only applicable with the Thunderbolt enabled Mac’s. I have my 2015 MacBook Pro running Windows 11, Mojave & Big Sur. All three operating systems were able to use my 2009 27 inch iMac with just a mini display port connection. I’ve tried to post a link to the pics of the iMac / MacBook Pro , however , KZread won’t let me include a link in my comment .

@@robsavage3296 I believe you. I guess I failed at expressing that if you try with the newer Main unit of Mac Os and try to connect with an older mac unit it will fail. I know there are ways. Im just speaking without fiddling with operating systems. But yes that can be done.

  • @robsavage3296

@@BULLETAWESOME no fiddling required. The 27 inch iMac’s from 2009/ 2010 only require a mini display port connection . Non 4K /5K iMac’s from 2011 - 2014 also support target display mode , however, these iMac’s require a Thunderbolt connection between the Mac’s and have the aforementioned issue not being supported by Big Sur or Monterey on the main Mac. Target display mode on the 27 inch models from 2009 / 2010 is more universal. I’ve even connected an old dell laptop to my 27 inch 2009 iMac and used it as a display.

2011 iMacs are very upgradeable: the RAM can be upgraded to 32GB and the hard drive to SSD: GPU can be replaced (I had that done recently) and CPU can even be upgraded from an i5 to an i7 (which I'll probably be doing next).

Keep in mind this is only for my 2011 model. But as I understand it the LG model number is on the back of all of them after you get it apart. So when I looked for it on Ebay I just typed in my model number plus 27" imac controller driver board. Hope this helps

meh, i honestly feel like the panel in that screen isn't worth salvaging as a standalone display. I recently revived a 2009 21.5inch and played some videos on it and was floored by just how bad the dynamic range was. Like dark scenes in shows were completely unwatchable. Ive never owned the nicest screens, in fact I've still yet to own anything better than 1080p, and that was bad even for me.

No I removed them. It’s possible they could be saved but it was just kind of a cheap last minute decision before disposing of it. I believe the graphics card went bad and the display didn’t work at all before I decided to take it apart

Basically just a 1080P 60Hz monitor. Damn, there is a much better use for this. Patching to Catalina or even Big Sur, and using it as an office computer, or giving it to somebody who needs an office computer. The hardware from 2009 isn't that outdated!

Depends on how "broken" it was I guess, if the "computer bits" had failed but the monitor was still fine I don't see why not to reuse it instead of it basically becoming e-waste as you can't do anything with it (edit: of course you could have it for parts too)
