Turn your 4-3-3 into a 2-2-6!
Ойындар
We have all seen how managers like Pep, Xavi, De Zerbi and now Klopp have changed the approach of the game by using a defender to slot into the pivot slot into midfield. How can we recreate this in Football Manager? Today we give it a go.

Brilliant as always! Technical and abstract formations and instructions made very simple 😎
Absolutely class. Your overviews are always incredibly well planned out and interesting. Will give it a go.

Really cool vid! I see a lot of FM'ers ask for the ability to specify a defensive and attacking formation but I've long thought that's way too basic an ask when the transition and the roles effectively allow you to do this. This proves it nicely

Glad you enjoyed!
i feel like an instruction like stay wider doesnt tell the player to actually operate in wider areas of the pitch but rather tells him that when the ball is on the left side of the pitch for example hes supposed to push to the right which opens massive gaps in defense
mate, first time viewer, Hell of a video. Been playing the game 20 years, and you have taught me some stuff!

Appreciated Alex thank you
You should try this with a libero on support and a defensive FB with sit narrower so it replicates Man City. I've not tried it but I think it'll work
Fairly new to fm23 and this is one of the most useful tutorials I've seen. Thanks 👍⚽

Legend!
I love videos like these
Top content as usual pal, what would happen if your other DM pivot was HB as well as the IWB on def. Also guessing these need to be fairly elite players to work properly.
@TheManagersSeat

worth a try. might mean your iwb is alone in DM though
Love the video! What are the pros/cons of using an IWB to a holding DM anyway?
@TheManagersSeat

Extra player in centre midfield so can use more attacking players. Cons - full back area will be exposed if losing the ball regular
Interesting tactic and something I've been experimenting with as well to try and replicate the 3-2-4-1 structures that Xavi at Barcelona, Pep at Man City and Klopp at Liverpool have been utilizing (put alot of effort into a Xavi one in particular that I uploaded to Steam titled "| The OG Version 1.0 | Xavi's Dominant 3-4-2-1 | Barcelona 2022-23 |" with another OP vs ME version as well that works rather well if having the players for it). However, here you are using a traditional four man defense with the Inverted Wing Back which makes me wonder why you are deploying Valverde at IWB who would be more suitable to the CM (A) role in midfield and not deploying Camavinga as the IWB instead who as left footed would be better suited taking into consideration a role score far closer to his current ability? For example, Valverde at 169 CA if he is retrained to be a natural at RB which would take his CA to 174 would have a role score of 151 out of his 174 CA as a IWB (D) whilst doing the same with Camavinga would take him to 159 CA where he would get a role score of 153 out of that 159 CA. So in the case of Valverde you lose 23 CA whilst only losing 6 CA with Camavinga. I'm a min/maxer at heart so I look at these things in the editor when determining tactical roles for players in a tactic at times when creating specific tactics for specific teams (I don't upload these ones as they are less generic) depending on players available to me though to be fair I don't know how much effect role scores have in the ME, if any. That said, would it not be logical that squeezing the most out of the players CA in regards to role scores would generate higher performance levels? Perhaps you don't know and I have not found any info from the developers in regards to this either so perhaps a moot point. I'm curious though to experiment with the basic outlines of this tactic that you share here with Liverpool and bring in Micky van de Ven and Josko Gvardiol to retrain them as right sided IWB's as they would be perfect for the role and duty (whilst also being able to use them as left sided Wide Centre Backs in a three man defense as well as LB cover in a traditional four man defense) and utilize Trent Alexander-Arnold as either the right sided Winger or the AP (A) at RCM which would let me use Salah as the striker and develop Ben Doak as the right sided Winger which I've been wanting to do since I watched a video of how he develops as a winger here on KZread which was rather crazy if reaching maximum PA of 180 particularly since both Calvin Ramsey and Connor Bradley are two other youths that could be retrained as perfect understudy's for Doak.

Thanks for the comment. I don't use the editor for anything so in honesty I don't go into the ins and outs of current/potential ability etc. Nothing wrong with it but just keeping it simple for newer players. Good points raised though
cool vid! just a heads up - you need to adjust your audio levels. Your voice is actually quieter than the 'swoosh' sound effect

Ok thanks!
I tend to play this way with Zinchenko as an inverted wing back, but I've noticed the game says hes better suited as a normal wing back or complete wing back. In that scenario, would you persist with using him as an IWB? As an IWB, Zinnys rating is 2 and a half stars, whereas he's 4 stars as a CWB/WB.

Trust yourself and your team setup. He can play either role don't judge it on stars

Thanks mate. Great video.
Would it work to play 2 IWBs with a half back in front and two CMs on attack to create the 3-2-2-3 that pep uses now?
@TheManagersSeat

Worth a try 👍
I'm new to the game and wouldn't think to put Valverde in that IWB position - especially with half a star. Is that something you can just ignore?

As you get used to the game you'll see that players can be retrained into other positions. If they have attributes that would suit that position. Click on a player, go to development and training, here you go to position training, when you select a position the attributes will highlight giving you a good idea if it could be a good move
Im a beginner on fm, idk how to setup a certain shape, like i wanna start up with a 343 (more like a 3421), but then when i have the ball one the 2 wing back go high wide, 2 wingers go in the middle, ans the 2 midfielders plays vertically (one stay back one go up) So i wanna attack with a 3151. Then defensive phase, the left Wing back go back and form a 4at back with the right center back that plays as a right back. Then the 2 midfielders retirn to the original orizzontal position Right wing back stay up, left winger stay wide, right Winger plays as a second striker to form the 442. Couldnt figure out how to do this in the tactics settings, any advice would be amazing. (Tried doing either 343 and 442 but in either starting shape wouldnt work either the attack or defensive shape

Fuck it, maybe i'll just try to create an easier one, but would loved to see that thing in action lol.
Don’t get why you’ve zoomed jn so we can’t see the rest of it to replicate?
If the lone DM was central, would this still have the desired effect positionally?
@TheManagersSeat

Should do
@flightrisk23

I’d imagine the only issue would be that the IWB would likely be further to the right. Not a problem necessarily, but might work better if you intend to overload on the right. If I was keeping the DM central I would alter which fullback was an IWB depending on which side I wanted to attack on
Weird title. You can do this with the base 433, in any transition shape (by position) like how Xavi's, Pep's, Arteta's, or Ten Hag. You can even make a 316 pretty much anyway without disrupting the base shape of a 433. A 4231 maybe slightly different because of the central position of the AMC. (the AmC would have to switch to one side). You don't even have to worry about transition with the appropriate training schedule. I have done it with Brighton (4231), Newcastle (433), and Arsenal (4231).
