Steely Dan has some chords known as Mu Major and Mu Minor chords, special voicings of add9 chords. Another way to get "Instant Steely Dan" is in the bassline. Every time you have a chord, play the root at the beginning, and the root again one eighth note before the end. (Using QJamTracks's example, the bass player would play E ... E C ... C A ... A B ... B E over and over, where "..." means hold that note.)
Great! Changing a rather boring chord progression into something very interesting, a modern sound. Thank you!
I wish I had seen this video 40 years ago.

Dude, you are the best. This is right above my comfort zone. Perfect.
this is a perfected way to see the difference in genres based on the same starting chords. Now I can see how jazz is advanced and complicated and simply to hard for me to remember and or play. I love jazz fusion live specialy the drums are cool. thanks for the great lesson. It showed me that I need to start from the beginning lol.
This was great ,just what I was looking for . Quartal chords are super interesting

Great lesson … some of the Jazz and Fusion chords would be easier to hear if you didn’t start soloing over them so soon.
How about getting into lead solo on fusion? Hope you have a video about it too. Thanks for this video

Love these lessons, thanks so much. But is the chord chart for Em9 correct? Wouldn't an Em9 consist of the notes E g b d and f#? The chart shows E g# and b#, which is an E augmented chord.
Excellent video. I liked and Subscribed within minutes. Quartal chords.....not for the hard of musical thinking :-)
Aha moment! 9:00-9:10...this instantly leapt out to me as "Allan Holdsworth harmony"--he had his own idiosyncratic/self-invented "system", but quartal harmony was clearly a big part of it!
Precies wat ik nodig had
The power chord plus 9th is the voicing used in the Police's "Every Breath You Take." For a while after it became a hit, if you used that voicing, it sounded like you were ripping off from that song.
Great graphics! - and great approach - though, not sure of the logic of dropping the 3s ---- also, let's not forget the role the percussion played in shaping these feels
Thats a lovely looking Ibanez. RG series? What model and where is it made? Great video too! Cheers
Are you still planning on releasing a video on composing with quartal chords? I know this - at least one person would love it😁

@@QJamTracks Oh ok fair does it's just that my folks are from there, have a good day 😊
Very ingtersting, thanks a lot. In the quartal example, you are playing the 4 first chords (Eqrt, Cqrt, Aqrt, Bqrt) and before to be back to Eqrt you play a fifth one, like a bridge (by the way, you don't play it the second time). Could please tell us what is this "bridge" chord ? Thank you.
@QJamTracks
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Fred. Good question. It's a Bb quartal chord with an augmented 4th on the top. This chords creates 2 leading tones towards the Eqrt: Ab-G, Eb-E and and a common note D.
@christopherheckman7957
3 жыл бұрын
@@QJamTracks There doesn't seem to be any standardized notation for quartal chords. My notation for that bridge chord would be Bb(PPA), which says there's a Bb, a perfect 4th above that (Eb), a perfect 4th above THAT (Ab), and an augmented 4th above the Ab (D). Of course, it doesn't take inversions into account ...
