Years ago, the Pencil Sketch Effect was one of the first things I learned how to do in Affinity Photo. And to this day, I still love the effect! I hope you enjoy it too. 😊
This is a wonderful video, I had always wanted to do this. I think I will turn it into a macro, as only the last step would need to be adjusted for other photos. Great!!
Wow! I had done somehting like this in Photoshop years ago, but this was so simple and easy and the result was fabulousous! Thanks Ally

Thanks, Ally 👍 I have been playing around with a different method that makes a photo look like a pencil and stump picture. I haven't downloaded your picture and tried this pencil drawing, yet. Nevertheless, I am wondering how it would look if the bottom (original) layer is duplicated, a B&W child adjustment is added, moving that layer to the top, and reducing its opacity. That might create a nice stump shading picture.

That sounds like a good technique to me! 😊

How simple is this? I have seen other tutorials for other packages go through hoops. I have always loved black-and-white pencil sketches for their simplicity and suggestiveness. I have no innate talent for drawing, but I can do this. Thank you, Ally

Doing this effect in Affinity Photo really is easy. I love it! 😊
Thanks Ally. I created a 9-step Macro of your step. Then added it to the Library. So, whenever I have a new photo, I just click once and it is converted to a pencil drawing.

Ok, now I need to learn how to create Macro steps. I was thinking of getting a notebook and writing all of this down, but the Macro steps sounds much better! lol. Thanks!

@@nikkilesley2525 Ok, here's what you will need to do. 1. Start Affinity Photo 2. Open any image document. 3. Click on STUDIO in the VIEW menu 4. Click on MACRO 5. In the MACRO window that pops up, click on the RED button to start recording the steps. 6. Do all of the steps that Ally laid out in the video 7. Once done, click on the BLACK (square) button in the MACRO to stop recording 8. Next, locate a button (icon) in the MACRO window that has three squares and a plus sign. This button will add the steps that you just created to the LIBRARY. Click on the button and give the steps a name that you will easily remember. 9. You will now see the steps appear in the LIBRARY window as the name you gave. So, you can use it anytime you want, without creating a new macro. 10. Test the steps, by loading a new document and clicking on the name you gave in the LIBRARY window. Hope that helps. Cheers!

What would be amazing is taking then image into Designer and converting the stronger lines into vectors. This is almost like tracing.

Can you do a tutorial about designing a book cover? There’s not many videos about that.

Great tutorial! I just noticed while following along, that you took the saturation down to -100% instead of 0% in your narrative.

That's true. Good catch!
Fantastic effect and many thanks for the easy to follow directions. I have my line drawing in grayscale .png and now wish to change from black/grayscale to white. How do I achieve this?
How you do on i pad ?
Nice video, but I failed at the first hurdle - in Affinity Photo 2 the initial layer invert does not work; it is greyed out in the menu. Is this technique only applicable in Affinity Photo 1?
One more step to add to this tutorial: Start by "cutting out" the various items in the picture separately and filling them with black, then turning those layers off. Then after doing the steps the tutorial shows, turn on the black items and put them behind the "penciled" layer and "grow" the black items just enough to give the features a thin pencil outline.
