I avoid blowout by not drilling all the way through. Just mark the bit with tape or sharpie so I know when to stop, then cut off the excess to reveal the hole. Bonus is that I still have the ends mostly undrilled, so I can use them for segments and such. Good thing the buffing slip is fixable. The pen looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing the video and Happy Pen Turning! :)

Hi Bob, That is a beautiful pen and I think your wife chose the correct blank to match the Black Titanium Pen Kit. I'm so glad you like the kits I sent and you and for making two beautiful pens from them. I will try and see if I can get some Tru-Stone here in the UK. Would some form of lubrication work when drilling or would it increase the likelyhood of a blow out due to a build up of slurry inside the blank? Take care Bob and thanks again for the shout out and making two amazing pens. Cheers, Huw

  • @RJBWoodTurner

Thank you Huw, Lubricant may keep the blank cool while drilling, just make sure it’s not something that would interfere with the glue up. I’d bet this material is porous and would be tough to clean it all out. Regards, Bob

I have turned a few Tru-stone and a lot of acrylic blanks. Wary of heat on either blank. I have had great success by cooling the blank and drill bit with water. Eliminates the 10 minute cool down wait. Also on really hard wood blanks like cocobolo, ebony, kingwood, etc. I cool the blank and bit with alcohol. Oil can soak into the blank as Bob said and is a mess to clean up. IMHO

Nice idea but you don’t want to use C/A on Truestone. Plus C/A is transparent and the scar will show through the glue because it’s a dull area in the blank and the surface is polished. I like that you’re coming up with ideas to try to repair blanks. That’s the best way to learn. Keep up the great work. Regards, Bob

Very Nice Pen Sir. It looks very beautiful. I hate the spring sometimes. At least your kit was able to remove the nib and fit the spring in after. I had one where I couldn't get the spring in because it needed to be put in before pressing the rest of the components together. I had a question regarding the tru stone blank. Have you ever turned poly resin blanks? like the ones that smell really bad and shatter like glass? Is tru stone like Polly resin or is it more like allumilite? I cant stand PR because I use carbide and I turn rather aggressively. I was trying to figure out if it was worth the investment. Great looking pen, I am glad to see you back in the swing of things. Hopefully We get to see some more videos soon. Stay safe.

I have turned poly resin. PR and TS are so different in their properties. Both are a challenge to turn and I would say both are equally difficult. I’ve never tried Carbide on either so I can’t say it’s good or bad. I can say that HHS made the TS much easier that I expected. Regards, Bob
