Turkish Airlines in BUSINESS CLASS - Birmingham to Istanbul

***
Read the WRITTEN version of this report on my blog:
planetpatrick.net/2022/10/31/...
***
Context:
It was a long day at the end of a long week. Turkish Airlines sometimes releases business class upgrades at check-in for a 'promotional price', so I paid over my hard earned cash and decided it would be fun to film a business class flight.
Join me to see the Turkish Airlines' Airbus A321neo product in action - what was the cost of the upgrade? What's the food like? Is the seat lie-flat? What about the legendary Turkish service ethic? Is there a decent lounge at Birmingham? And will my Turkish driver get over his grumpiness?

That's a great, honest review. I'm flying TK business class from BHX in June. The meal service looks awesome for a short haul flight. I flew from BHX for the first time last month - very efficient, no long security and passport lines and significantly better than MAN. I'm following your channel now!

Patrick I just found your channel recently and am loving catching up on your videos. I particularly enjoyed your trips through Canada where I lived for 15 years before returning to Scotland (my family stayed in Canada - all in Calgary and various parts of BC) as well as your Baltics series. I’m off to Riga and Vilnius in early December (riding biz class in the Lux Express too). Those videos have given me lots of tips on where to go, what to eat etc, so thank you. I’m also an av-geek and travel very extensively. Some folk say I should start a channel like yours but I’m afraid I don’t have your confidence, your stage presence or the will to humf all that camera gear, so I’ll stick to watching and commenting. All the best and keep it up. It’s most entertaining and enlightening.

That's a very kind comment, Derek! I do love to travel a lot and live full-time on the road now. I love Canada (and Scotland too). I hope you enjoy Riga and Vilnius, both cities are very charming and have really good food and infrastructure. There's plenty to see. Let me know how your trip on Lux Express goes! There is a LOT of gear that I hump around - I literally just had to go to a specialist yesterday as my back was so sore :)

@@PlanetPatrick will do! After the Baltics its Mexico and Guatemala over Christmas/NY for me. They have luxury buses in Mexico too. I'm riding one from Oaxaca to Mexico City. I believe there's even a lounge! Hope your back gets better soon. Bye for now.

Many thanks! Glad to be back with a trip report :) FYI - I'm hijacking this comment for a second... now that I've worked out how to do decent mapping and music, I'm sprucing all my old flight reviews over the next few months and putting them on a new channel that does *trip reports only*. I'll share more about that in due course - but if anyone is reading this - check out and subscribe for that at "Now Boarding" - kzread.info/dron/WQqAIpERhhGjfrxxJlpX9A.html

@@PlanetPatrick No worries! Have you heard about Aer Lingus’ new A320neo operating between Dublin and Heathrow?! I’ve been on it twice in the last week and booked on it again twice towards the end of this week. I think there is only 1 trip report on this aircraft type with Aer Lingus on KZread so hopefully I can get mine up soon. Looking forward to more of your trip reports and no problem about hijacking my comment! 🤣🤣Jason

I can’t believe I missed this report when it appeared last year: I’m a bad fan. I like Turkish. I’ve flown them a few times from the US to IST. Since the carrier is *A, I get into their lounges at various US airports. Turkish Airlines employees are always professional and friendly. I haven’t been to the new airport yet. I’m looking forward to it.

Chances are the large group waiting at the No1 lounge were Priority Pass card holders. Many are not being allowed into UK lounges at times unless pre-booked for a few.

Good to know. The people ahead of me were pre-booked and still couldn’t get in. They were a bit cross (understandably).

Great review Patrick as always, looks a good airline to fly with. Just interested in how your upgrade to business class worked, did you just ask at the check in if there was availability and price?

So is it better to buy an economy ticket and ask for an upgrade and pay the difference ? Do you pay less than if you paid originally for business class ?

  • @PlanetPatrick

Hi - yes it was much cheaper than paying full price at the outset (I can’t guarantee that for every future trip but it did work for mine)

I think it's better that PE, but not up there with some medium haul and most long haul products. However, I understand their long haul business class is very good. I'm looking forward to trying it.

@@PlanetPatrick True, but I wouldn't call Birmingham Airport one of those. It is quite chaotic for a city of this size and importance, particularly the check-in and security areas. It is slightly better once you cross security and go to the waiting area. Lounges are also almost always overflowing with passengers. The arrival is no good either and rather basic.

Having used Istanbul as a hub for 30 years from the Gulf, I can honestly say that the airport staff there are the absolutely rudest ignoramuses in the world...consistently...even though Turkish Airlines themselves are great!!! So, grumpy customs officer and grumpy driver...par for the course...not even decent tipping works...they just act insulted...and grumpy!!!
