I am literally fascinated by this piece. I have listened to every version of Turceasca that I can find. This is an incredibly difficult piece. So far the best I've seen is the black and white video by Taraf de Haïdouks. For some reason that one lacks the mesmerizing intro. Two other Taraf de Haïdouks renditions are on youtube that include the intro but I still like the raw energy of the former version. They play the whole thing from memory without a single sheet of music anywhere. The best rendition after that is the Kronos Quartet version. I do think having a cimbalom in the ensemble is essential to producing a really good rendition of Turceasca.

Nice comment Rogers. Greetings from Romania! The members from Taraf de Haidouks actually plays so good this masterpiece just because they enjoy music in a virtuous way. The guy with the violin, his nickname is Caliu, the real name is Anghel Gheorghe, he is one of the best violonist in the world, a lot of people from all over the world are coming in his town and pay nice chunks of money to teach them.
