Turangi A Town With Heart

In 1964 Turangi, a small rural settlement on the southern shores of Lake Taupo was selected to be the site of a new hydro town for the Tongariro Power Development. In just six years the population grew from 500 to 10,000. Despite the challenges presented by this unprecedented growth a vibrant and strong community developed and flourished.

We moved to Turangi, from Whakamaru, in 1967. Like many kids, we went to all schools (Turangi Primary, Hirangi Primary, Pihanga School and finally Tongariro High School) I still remember when the Turtle Pool was built at McLaren Park, as well as the NZED Village, off Puatata Rd. Mr Richard Print, builder, was the main builder, if I remember correctly. Some of the signs that used to adorn the entrance to the township: 'Turangi, town of the future' 'Turangi, a town for all seasons' 'Turangi, trout capital of the world'

When we moved to Turangi in 1971 from Rotorua we were all amazed by the shops all open on a Saturday morning. This was so the project workers and there families could do there weekly shopping.

44.12 minutes. Kiaora Pam Quinlan nee Harris. I remember your family so well, a lovely family. My name is Te Poutu Taute, a good friend of your brothers Ken and Frank, your lovely parents Murdoch and Jacky. Wow. We lived behind you on the next street Hingaia. Your dad Murdoch was our rugby coach, your brothers Ken and Franky great role models. You're looking good Pam. Nice video. Loved it in Turangi. It was exciting. All the great entertainers of the 60s had a concert in Turangi, Simple Image, Formula, Larry Morris to name a few. Thank you for sharing this video.

Was born 02/01/73 Turangi Maternity, went to Pihanga School, Mrs Simons. Lived on Te Hei Place, by grandparents. My nan drove a taxi, and koro worked the hydro works. They moved from Aratiatia to Turangi, originally milkers from Ruatoki. Loved growing up in Turangi, it's me just like the cold weather, right to the bone....beautiful film. Lots of familiar people❤ nga mihi nui

I was born there in Jan 1969. My Grandfather and father, built a lot of the buildings there, from steel placing, block laying. Dad worked for ministry of Works. Uncle Gragam was a tunneler
