The fact he says he wanted to be a surfer THEN became interested in cars explains *A LOT*. I visited his shop about 7 years ago and he wasn't a typical garage owner. Usually they're rather abrupt and...tunnel visioned? I think mostly on what they need to execute, then the steps following that execution. When I met him he was spraying down an engine, smoking a cigarette and was listening to, "All About That Bass - Meaghan Trainor". We spoke for a while, gave me a tour and just prior to leaving he gave me a bag of decals and other knick-knacks. He is *genuinely* interested in meeting people that are curious about tuning and his shop. He likes foreigners visiting because he wants to know how they found out about him and what style is happening where they're from. He's a really cool guy, very casual. Again, more surfer guy than strict garage owner. During that trip I also visited the RE-Amemiya shop, but Amemiya-san wasn't there. His shop was equally impressive, just RX's rather than GTR's.

Really interesting to hear his perspective on the car world in Japan vs the USA. Also really cool to hear about how things were different back in the 90's...really seems like the golden age of Japanese motoring. @@ShaiyanHossain Yes, but he also said it himself: In Japan, you get a bad reputation for having fun with your car. It truly seems like the Japanese just have a very different opinion on the subject and having such a bad rep would definitely deter a lot of people from doing the activity. So if your own home market doesn't even care, then why should you waste so much money developing a sports car, that won't sell very much, at a time where making sports cars is a hassle in of itself already? Sports cars just aren't selling as they used to back then and I think I know why: There was a time, where having a sports car was on most people's bucket list. These days most people just want something, that runs reliable, doesn't pollute the world and doesn't drink away their wallet. And that's if they even want to use cars at all... In my class currently at least 6 people (half the class) don't even intend to get their license. And a few of those, that are getting it, are only doing it because they're forced, either by their parents or by the fact, that they live in the middle of nowhere... Now my opinion on the matter may be influenced by the fact, that I live in Switzerland, a country that honestly has probably one of the most well established public transport networks. You can nearly get everywhere from anywhere just using a tramway, bus or a train. And most people do in fact only use it. I also wasn't really around during those times to verify how popular cars were at the time. But from what I keep hearing from people who were there, it seems to me that from the 80's to the early 2000's sports cars were one of the goto hobbies. Even if you had never previously shown any interest in cars, there was still a pretty good chance you'd get pulled into that world somehow. Nowadays I don't see that happening past 20... I don't know whether that's just media messing with me or it's actually the case. But one thing is for sure: I love cars and will keep my passion for them burning. I'll try to do my part for the car community and enjoy my hobby until I'm gone. I won't force my kid into it if I ever have one, but who knows, maybe he/she would love a few rides from time to time :)

@@ShaiyanHossain Idk from the 90s where japanese cars competed with the latest and greatest Porsches and Ferraris on an equal and sometimes superior level. To now we have the 2020 Civic type r, slower than most of the competetion in a straight line, ulgier than most and with a worse interior. Atleast it is just slightly cheaper and handles well. And on a large circuit it would get destroyed by an A45 and RS3. It is certainly a far cry from the days when an r34 could spank a 993 turbo and a Ferrari 355 around just about any course.

@///AMG you forget how capable the platform is. The A90 supra with some new tires is faster than a many modified 90/00s JDM cars you covet so much on a track like Road Atlanta, ie Jackie Ding's supercharged AP1. Also the engine is pretty underrated, it makes like 360wtq stock. AMS is already into the low 10s on theirs with 500+hp. People are just upset its not another A80 and refuse to take their nostalgia glasses off. The only real flaw I have with it is that the m240i has the B58 with a 6mt but they wont offer it in the A90

I respect and understand where Kobayashi is coming from the GR Supra. Yes it may be an BMW, however it is a new concept that Japanese tuners aren’t familiar with the chassis because it is a BMW Z4. We all grew up with Smokey, Mines, and Kobayashi back in the 2000 era and they “never” tuned a European or American cars Back Then. They only tuned Japanese cars because there were familiar and also 100% manufacturer build. Now that it is the 20th century (2020) where all Japanese car culture is slowly dying and also the Supra has reborn sadly it isn’t 100% Toyota, but it can still perform well at the track. I personally love the MK5 Supra, but that’s just my opinion.

A failure? The GR Supra may not be a Japanese sports car, but I believe that Kobayashi-San wanted the new Z to defeat the GR Supra because he is a Nissan guy. MCR has always been a Nissan tuner from the start back with the 32’s and etc… I understand where he’s coming from, but sad to say the R35 GTR is an old car now we all have to accept that. How can you say the GR Supra isn’t a good car when it has proven itself every year? Why is HKS making great aftermarket parts for it?
