    My wife's 97 XK8 was behaving as though it was a winded 85 year old geezer. It had an 'ENGINE FAULT' displayed on the DIC and it wouldn't downshift to the point where, with the pedal mashed to the floor, it was losing speed climbing hills and fairly asking to be sent to the automobile old age home. I saw your video and executed the transmission ECU protocol you suggested. So I took it out and hammered it hard. OMG !! Within minutes the ENGINE FAULT code had disappeared and the 'geezer' began to behave like an 18 year old on viagra. Jesus, what a transformation! THANKS SO MUCH! You just saved me a boatload of $$$ !!!

    John, really enjoying your videos, thanks for your generous shares! Though I always craved the XK practicalities (kids) meant I owned an XJ8 in the UK 1998/99 which I regretfully had to move on to work overseas. The colouring in/outside was exactly as your XK8 with many common features as you would know. So as a semi-retired engineer now Aussie resident you're giving me the itch to pick up an XK8 or XKR X100 series.....especially with a bit of time on my hands now! The question is what would you buy given a choice, the later 2003/4 version or ealier thereby avoiding some (not all!) of the issues you are highlighting (e.g. NIKASIL cylinder coating). All the best, please keep going! Dave N

    Dave Nolan thanks for watching. Nikasil aside, as it no longer gives issues due to low sulphur fuel. If you can afford the little extra they cost and are not wedded to the LK 1 looks, then the 4.2 litre cars are faster more economical and as you suggest include many of the upgrades that early cars will need. So that’s the sensible choice. I just prefer the bumpers and 3 dial dash of the earliest cars.

    Hi Jules - do you know if the key/pedal reset works in an '04 XKR? I have the dreaded squawk problem at 3rd to 4th change I believe and also a nasty kick down from 2nd to 1st whilst slowing for a roundabout or corner and still rolling - I'm thinking my trans may need the additive repair but not sure and also the adaptive cycle repair. Cheers for the awesome tips mate!

  • @Redeye196513

    @Redeye196513

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@TrevorHeathPhotography I'm fairly sure this procedure only works on the 5 speed boxes, but give it a try, it wont do any harm. Sounds like the additive is needed for the squawk and a check on your trans fluid levels/condition for the other. Additionally, if you havent already, try reprogramming and reconfiguring the shift program.

  • @TrevorHeathPhotography

    @TrevorHeathPhotography

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Redeye196513 I just wrote about 30 lines of text and deleted it in error! ahhh!!!. Anyway, I'm going to buy a filter kit that comes with all the sleeves and seals for the mechatronic unit and intend to do this whole job as I've found that my issue is probably a seal in the mechatronics unit. This requires removal of the valve body/mech unit - I watched several videos over the last weeks and have learned so much about the main things that fail with the 6 speed and the two exact problems that are the cause of my issues. The repair is remarkably straightforward, can/will be rather messy, the mechatronics sleeves and seals degrade (and the dual square seal cracks often causing the 2nd to 1st gear bang at slow speed) - I will buy all my parts from Rockauto in the USA as they even have 'cheapest' shipping! That point alone amazed me - so much cheaper and everything I want in the one place instead of trying to hunt for parts on ebay or amazon which I have done in the past. I like Rimmer Bros in the UK too...but Rockauto has an entire kit that even includes new Torx bolts for only $108 usd. That doesn't include fluid but they also have Mercon SP for only $10 per quart. That beats the $60 per litre I would have to pay in many other places for genuine ZF Lifeguard 6 fluid. I've seen the only way you can reprogram the ZF6HP trans is via IDS or SSD software and doing a hard reset there - most people seem to leave the car to relearn of its own accord it seems as they don't mention redoing adaptations etc. I did do the kick down reset when I got a new battery around 2 yrs ago. Not sure that initiated any other reset of the transmission learning process, however. How would I reconfigure my shift program by the way? (or is it in this video and I can't remember? lol) I think the only way from what I've seen so far is via software and I'll probably leave that till I see how the car performs after I change all of this out. I have seen how the adaptations are performed - it's quite awkward if you don't have a very very very long stretch of uninhabited road like an airport runway perhaps! This guy I have seen in one video was on the motorway/highway doing it - he'd keep putting his warning lights on as he was following the instructions on his laptop, slowing then increasing in speed etc at certain revs x 4 the whole process over again...seemed very dangerous to me! I would try to find a backcountry road here in NZ. hmmm now, this is about similar to the amount of what I wrote before but actually quite different too! LOL anyways thanks to all the Jag owners who help each other out - the comradery is great! 👍👍👍 It will be several months before I do my job but I will comment on TTG site probably once done....plus the JagForums site of course. cheers!

    Welcome to our channel Wheel sensors are the most common cause. Put a OBDII reader into the socket below the steering wheel and read the codes. if it says wheel sensor then you can swap them out to resolve it. If its ABS and Stability control error together then it can be a well known issue with a bad soldered joint for the ABS wires in the ECU. It is home fixable but not the sort of thing I could describe in text and I have never fixed it myself. but there are some videos others have made on KZread. Keep watching and good luck with the new engine

    Have a question regarding the size of the torx screws. Went to try, and nothing in my toolbox would fit - T30 was too large, T27 too large, T25 too small. Surely there isn't a difference between torx sizes UK vs USA? By the way, I did have high pitched plastic-y squeeky rattles between the demister vents and the windscreen; fixed them with a length of 3/8" rubber hose forced between windscreen and vent. Worked a charm, and totaly invisible.

    Hi John. The glass can make a lot of noise on the seal in this area. If you drop the drivers window by half an inch does the noise stop. If so try it with a piece of kitchen roll/tissue trapped in the window at various points if you can stop the noise then rub some talcum powder?baby powder on the rubber seal at that point. It may resolve your issue. If not then an 'A' pillar trim that is not correctly clipped in place would be my bet.

    Hi KingCobra. Yes and Yes A re set would speed up the cars natural but lengthy adjustment to the new system. As long as you have your radio codes and know how to reset the window memory, then you should remove the battery. Leave it off for an hour or two and mission accomplished. Just remember to drive the car the way you want it to tune itself for during the first 15 minutes or so. ie if you want it lively, turn on sport and use the J gate plenty to raise the revs a little. Enjoy, and thanks for watching John👍

    Hi Dariusz, Thanks for watching the channel. My detailed experience is with the XK8 rather than the XKR. However, on the positive side, the performance of the R is significantly higher and even easier to further increase through merely changing the size of the supercharger pulleys. The Brembo brakes are appreciably more capable and the louvered bonnet is considered by most to be a desirable aesthetic feature aside from its genuine need to vent the under bonnet temperatures. The gearbox on early XKR's is a little more robust than the early 8's On the negative side. They tend to cost more to buy, are marginally more expensive to insure and use more fuel. You will typically get through brakes more quickly and they are significantly more expensive to replace. The supercharger whine on an XKR is a very significant element of the aural experience. ie in an XK8 its a very quiet car or with a performance exhaust the exhaust note is beautiful. In the XKR you will be far more aware of the whine from under the bonnet. Most love that sound, but be sure you do too. its not going to be possible quieten that element down. (I like it😁) Beyond that, the choice is all about personal preference. Happy researching👍

The steering column used to work but it stopped working and then the head light wouldn't go on when turned on. So I was wondering there's something under the steering causing this? But weird that all/every other light turn on, including the high beam, except the regular head lights. But BUT... it could just be some thing as simple as a wire get crushed between 2 pieces of metal somewhere on the way to the headlight filaments. Can't think of anything else now since fuses and relays are all checked out. MY: 1997 XK8 base. Will have to take apart the steering column for inspection.

    Just to confirm, will that driving style learning trick not work on a 2003 XK8?

  • @ToTheGarage

    @ToTheGarage

    5 жыл бұрын

    The Battery off technique WILL work on yours. The technique triggered from the cockpit shared by our fellow subscriber, MAY work on yours, but certainly won't harm yours. The reason for vagueness is:- The cockpit version 100% works on Mercedes derived XK gear boxes. It appears from the research that I have done, that many people get a good result with it on our 'non Mercedes' (ZF) gearboxes as the German ECU is probably very similar if not the same on both. However there is no documented proof that I have been able to find, that shows the cockpit sequence triggers 'learning' in the ZF box. The Battery off version definitely works on your car though Julian. Your gearbox is the same as mine. I trained mine with the battery off version not long after purchase and after a gearbox rebuild and on both occasions the result was quite marked. I have (as you saw in the video) applied the cockpit trigger process suggested with no ill effects, but As my car is already trained to be 'aggressive' and to be honest I couldnt bring myself to train it the other way🤣 So at the moment, I can't personally confirm that it works on both the Mercedes box and our ZF5HP24 boxes. I will have to set aside an afternoon and try teaching it to be more relaxed using the new technique just to put all doubt to one side. Its just time is always against me of late. (Damn real job😫) Hope this helps Julian John👍

    Many Jaguar dealers will supply the code if you take proof of ownership in and the VIN number. Other wise you can use an online service (Usually for a small fee) Here is a link to one of my video's where I do just that. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gp1m3Kh_ZLbgcqw.html Ideally you would look in the brown leather jag folder in your glove box where there will be a credit card with the PIN number on the back or on a sticker inside the front cover of one of your handbooks in the black jaguar document pouch. Though these often get removed and misplaced by previous owners.

    @@ToTheGarage I have that book full of what seems to be every single thing that came with it from new except for I see nowhere wherever there's anything has anything to do with a radio code. I emailed the dealership again asking if I could get it hopefully that works.

    @@ericdiekmann2308 Sorry Eric. I always assume its a right hooker😔. My Bad. To the best of my knowledge, American cars have no radio code when supplied. Although it was possible to request the dealer add the pin code function through the Jag diagnostic software. So a few anomylies do exist in the states.
