Would you consider your tuning 4D / 4G, as a high snare tuning? Most times its always only talked about low / med / high....but where starts or ends these categories more or less?

Awesome man. Feel free to sub, I'm going to try and make a bunch more soon. Usualy once I get it like this I just adjust the batter head for the most part afterwords.

I wouldn't think 11 Hz would make that much of a difference! I've usually done very similar to what you're doing, 400/300 batter. I've also done 400/316. I will definitely try 390/300, and I'm also going to try 376/266. Thanks for the info man, and great sounding snare!

11 HZ can make a huge difference. If the head is being choked it really livens up.

Dude thank you for posting this, I was using the tunebot suggestions for the snare and it wanted the reso head at 398 for a perfect 5th. This may work for lower notes idk the but when I hit the drum it wasn't making the right note I was going for probably because it was being choked. I like a nice medium high note produced probably a little lower than what you're going for. I looked up the fundamental note setting of a tom that produces a g (3rd octave). And just tweaked the reso and batter tension frequencies to find a perfect fourth. I came up with 291 batter and 388 reso head. 388/291=1.33, which is what you should be going for in a snare not really a specific note just a perfect interval instead although these frequencies do produce a fundamental g which is nice.

It's a bit different for every drum i find.. I usually ballpark 390-410 on my reso, get it in tune and then start around 300 on my batter and just keep tightening it until it sounds good. Some snares can go above 410, some are choked at 400 I find.. the size, material heads all make a difference. I use the tunebot calc as a guide. and NEW HEADS make such a difference too!

@@beyondbetrayal each drum is unique for sure partly why I use evans heads so they are seated nicely on the drum. But yeah basically it opened my eyes to do some tweaking, the toms for now I just use the guide and tune them to the same frequency top and bottom heads with a major 3rd interval between the 10-12-13-14-16 toms. I had bought a drumdial a long time ago but I was kinda still starting out so i didn't have the patience and couldn't figure it out but this tunebot really helped me get back into it.

Whats with the snare wire? Complete tight?

This is an awesome video. Any suggestions/settings for kick drum?

I have a pearl free floating snare its 14x6.5 and its shell is Maple / mahogany .it has a beautiful tone to the shell..The bottom snare side head sounds best at 380-385 to me that is tight and sounds better than whan its at 390-400 that just seems to diminish the warmth and tone of that drum..when i bring it down to the 380's range its much nicer and still has Increadabel crack to it. Anything over 388 just seems to much.

I mean, it depends on the drum usually. 100% if the drum is getting choked, it's too tight. 300-400 works for me most of the time, but id say batter from 300-330 and reso from 375-400 is a pretty decent starting point.

What note do you use in the Snare ? G or C ? D ? Regards from Portugal

Hi mate just got a new tune bot studio and can’t get batter to read over 290. After 290 tightening it doesn’t give a higher reading. Am I dumb here or?

Awesome video! Great explaining on how the different intervals affect the sound. I usually don't experiment too much with tuning and just tune the same all the time(Usually a perfect 4th) but now I know what a fifth would be like and I might try it as well if I need to cut through even more. Btw what snare are you using, how would a steel snare affect the sound(Like in the video compared to ex a wooden snare)?

Every snare is different. I've had some old steel and aluminum snares that would ring for days. My Pearl Reference steel snare is dry as a bone. The thickness of the shell makes more difference than the material in my opinion. A really thick shell (both my reference snares are tanks) has a dry sound as it doesn't vibrate as much. Wood USUALLY has more of a warmer tone when comparing apples to apples however. I'm starting to enjoy more overtones in my snare sound these days. It really helps it cut a heavy mix.

@@beyondbetrayal I see, so if you tune the bottom head tighter (to a prefect 5th instead) you would get more overtones and more crack in it? I have started thinking that my snare which tuned very similar to this video is a little to dry/fat for my needs and doesen't cut through enough on some gigs. I want a really bright sound.

@@KarlstadDrums It depends on where you are tuned in the first place. I find cranking up the reso tends to give me more crack, a bit higher of an overtone, but shorter sustain. Too much sounds bad and choked though.

It really depends on your tuning. I always go between 380-410 or so on my reso for snares, then the batter 300-360. I usually play 14x5 or 14x6.5 I don't think it changes much going to a 13. You still want a snappy reso. if the drum sounds choked, the reso is too tight usually. if you want it deeper sounding go a bit lower on the batter.

I find I keep them all the same, and then adjust for taste. Maple is going to have a different overall tone, and charactor, but it all works the same. Steel, brass, maple. I tune my steel and wood pearl reference snares the same way.

What happens when you hit the Center of the drum? Different note I bet

Yes. You tune to the edge, the center will be the fundamental note. Fun fact, with the bottom head muted, it is also different than the two ringing together. So you tune the edges of both, and if you get it right the top and bottom end up in tune with each other to produce a great note. :)

I keep getting wrong readings when tuning the reso head. Do you know what the problem could be?

Turn on the filter. if you don't it gets weird around the 350-400 range.

380 to 410 is ways my reso range. Start lower 300 to 360 is my batter.

Wayne Baker No, he tuned to a ‘perfect 4th’, so it was a D on the batter and a G on the reso. If you start with the batter side note (D) and count up 4 whole notes (including the batter’s note) you’ll get the perfect 4th. So from D you go - D, E, F, G - that’s 4, so G is your reso side.

gottliver I think major is full steps and minor is half steps, right? So a minor third would be 3 half steps... a major 3rd would be 3 full steps... If I have that right, why wouldn’t a major 3rd be “perfect”? (I’m not doubting, just wanting to learn)

@@DZNTZ Major 3rd is 4 half steps, Minor 3rd is 3 half steps not including the starting note. C to E is Major 3rd, E to G is minor 3rd.

Absolutely does brother. It’s all personal too. I myself go minor 5th’s. One kit I do the 5th’s but bottom tighter than the top. So experiment! Happy drumming bro. 🇨🇦👍🏼

I feel like It takes forever when cranking my res head past 220hz on the lugs... am I suppose to keep turning them all the way to almost 400? It just seems like its outrageously tight and not okay...

400 is about 3 full turns a lug? mabye a bit more. i do 392 or so these days.. it's pretty tight

Could the reso of a 13 snare go higher than a 14 snare?

I think it will be slightly tighter in the middle at max tension. I don't know how much higher it will get.. you can tune any drum until you choke it. at that point it stops producing a note and well sound "dead"

Sorry. To these exact frequencies.

You should forget about all that stuff and just tension your drums to where they sound good, and feel good to play. It really doesn't matter what notes you believe your heads are tuned to. Nobody knows, or cares what the notes are that you think you have dialled in. The truth is, you don't tune drums, you tension them, but this is just my way of thinking. You're free to do whatever works for you.

I can do it both ways, and yes, you do tune them. Also, if you are ever in the studio doing a long session, getting your toms to the EXACT sound they were before you did all your sound checks and set up is a breeze when you have a reference point. Doing it by ear will make for a bad sounding album. Some bands record guitar DI, and do song after song for months if you DIY it, this way you can have a whole album sound the same. To each their own, I have seen many people who think they can tune try a tunebot and realize how bad their kit sounded before. I have helped many of these people too. For me it's a tool. Gets me to where I want to be faster.
