Tuna speared from dock in harbor

A man speared, and successfully landed a free-swimming yellowfin tuna in the Dana Point Harbor on Sunday, June 14th. Video submitted by Derek Marso of Valley Farm Market, whose sister shot the video after returning from Catalina Island on the ferry. More at sdfish.com/news/saltwater-fish...
Disclaimer: Shooting a finfish without being in the water and swimming is illegal. We do not condone illegal activity. This was posted not to celebrate the catch, but to show the unusual event of a yellowfin tuna in the Dana Point Harbor.

    I once was tied to a breakwater dock, and thought i saw the dorsal fin of a shark! Upon closer inspection, it was the nose of a skate. I jumped aboard and grabbed a gaff hook.. with a short wait, it came within reach, and i let 'im have it. It was then I discovered that skates and rays have the aquatic equivilent to All Wheel Drive. He stuck it in reverse, and the dock i was standing on started to torque! Standing on 1 dock cleat and holding to the other sides dock cleat with my free hand, i finaly wrenched it from the water. Proud of my teenage self, i measured it (6 1/2 feet tip of the nose to tail tip, 6 feet even accross the wings) andstarted to walk it down the dock to show my fishing buddies.... It never made it there... Some Koreans saw me comming, and I heard the universal "Nice Catch" sound..." WaAAAHh!! " Then started the money.. 20 and digging...60... more digging, and A 50 too!??! . SOLD!!

    Wow I attempted the same thing when I had a large yellowfin free-swimming alongside my sailboat during a passage from Zihuatanejo to Acapulco, Mexico. It didn't work for me, I missed, but it was odd to see Tuna swimming alongside my boat like a porpoise would. I'm sure that's way more likely, however, than seeing a Tuna free-swimming inside a marina in California. That's gotta be a once in a lifetime thing.

    Spearfishing is a way many people live. I live on Maui, Hawaii and over here a main source of food for lower and medium class people comes from spearfishing. You aren't technically suppose to shoot from shore because it's really hard to tell where something is when you're looking from the top of the water but there is nothing against it. It is just hard to do that's why no one does it.

    its also because its not legal to hunt with a spear gun and if you accidentally shot it in the air, the spear can fly like 200 feet and kill someone. there is no law saying you have to fire it under water, manufactures do that for liablity and legal purposes.

    Steve Giron If I said "Anyone with a fishing license MAY catch fish, it means the same thing as you MUST have a fishing license to catch fish. It is spoken in a tone to which the user is being given permission to catch fish as long as you have a fishing license. Do we agree? So if I said Anyone swimming in the water may use a speargun, it also means You MUST be in the water to use a speargun. Make sense?

  • @SDFishcom

    @SDFishcom

    Neill Drake While you're certainly right about this being illegal. Your reply in this case is inaccurate. This is the most important regulation code pertaining to this instance "28.65. GENERAL. Except as provided in this article, fin fish may be taken only on hook and line or by hand." So basically, unless they say you can do something (like they do in 28.90), you cannot catch fish any other way. "MAY" and "MUST" are not at all the same thing, quite the opposite actually.
