Tulipa ostrowskiana, a vivid scarlet red tulip species for the garden.

Tulipa ostrowskiana is one of the most variable tulip species, with colours ranging from red to yellow, and height varying from a few cm to about 20-25; even the leaves can vary in appearance, in some plants being undulate, and in others being quite straight and smooth, and the difference in leaf shape can possibly be affected by the environmental characteristics of the location where it grows. Therefore, it can be a bit difficult to predict the characteristics of the species when grow from seeds in such a highly polymorphic species, but I was lucky enough to get a beautiful specimen as advertised in the website rareplants.co.uk where I bought it from, and I am absolutely delighted with its vivid orange-scarlet colour!!!
Tulips are some of the hardiest plants in temperate and cold climates and are hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8, therefore most of the cold and temperate countries including the throughout the entire United Kingdom, where I live. The bulbs need to be planted in autumn in full sun (or at least partial shade) and well drained soil, between 10 and 15 cm deep and 10-15 cm apart (a bit more packed if planted in a pot, in which case ensure to put adequate dose of fertilizers to nourish the plants), and will bloom in early to mid-spring. After blooming, it is important to not cut the leaves off but let them die down, it might be unsightly but it is very important to keep them as they are photosynthesizing in order to provide energy to store in the bulb for the blooming of the following year. In late spring / early summer the leaves will die down and the bulbs go dormant, and you can then keep them in the ground, or lift them and divide them, if you wish. When they are dormant, tulip bulbs should not be watered, and if they are in the ground near other plants that need watering in summer, the fact that you planted them in well drained soil will ensure that no water will stagnate near the bulb causing rotting.
