This song should NOT be considered SERIOUS. The original song was sung during the Singing Revolution (people would come together in masses and show their unity as a nation, to protest for independence from The Soviet Union). This song was on national television right before the new years eve countdown. The point of the song was actually to MAKE FUN of racists and bigoted people in Estonia who like to hate everything.

+cyberjack yes, there are autistic (clinically) people also in Estonia as in other countries, who would take this drastic self-irony and humour of the song seriously. These autists also overlook all the discourses in the country.

Estonian "neeger"-s equivalent in U.S English would be "negro" rather than "nigger". Former meaning has had far longer tradition and history compared to latter - despite recent attempts by "interested parties" to attach negative connotations to the word. "Nōgi" (soot) or "pigi" (tar) would be offensive terms in Estonian if you are looking for such.

@riinuots its not "n word" word is Neeger, and its not offensive in Estonia. Nõginägu what u say is "black face" actually is: Nõgi - word specifically refer to the black substance that collects on surfaces such as inside an oven or fireplace due to burning

The song is great, but really impossible to translate ... The video mimics the original one almost exactly. Similar voices of the artists. The new words are not just words (humorously over-the-edge), but fit soundwise with the original words, and partly exactly copy the original words, but with meaning altered through just some miniscule shift. The original song was about 'countries' in the sense 'counties' - and the new song also starts out by enumerating these Estonian counties - but at the very end, shifts to the other meaning - 'country'. While the original song reminded that no county is alone - not even Virumaa (with its phosphorite problem), then the new one ends with a marvellously tragicomical "no count(r)y is alone - except for, perhaps, Syria ... "

The original point of the "phosphorite war" in Estonia at 1987-88 was to preserve the nature of Virumaa county so that local natives woudn't have to leave that place. It had nothing to do with providing viru people a second home in Lasnamäe town district in Tallinn. Similarly, we can weep about the oil shale mining plans in Jordan and Lebanon because it would spoil the local ground waters, but it would have nothing to do with providing a new home somewhere else in Europe. Furthermore, the population size of estonians has been steady for the last 110 years and is only 2-3x above preindustrial levels, while the population of Syria has increased 25x in the last 110 years - that is the fault of syrians themselves and noone else.

As an European foreigner who lived in Estonia for some while I am proud of the Estonians that they are not agreeing to this refugee-lie and don´t import them. It is not about racism, it is simply about letting people with a complete different culture into a country which is already causing a lot of trouble in Europe; even the Russians in Estonia are not fully integrated (e.g. Narva). First it was the USSR, now it is the EU - don´t let them dictate your life, Estonians!

@@martinusk9598 nah, our culture is in fact pretty close to German. Even our language is mishmash of German (30%+ words originate from German), Swedish and Russian in Finnish sauce. That's the very reason Finns have really hard time understanding Estonian. Extrapolating further, our culture is still generally "Christian" like rest of the "Old Europe" which is quite unlike Muslim culture imported with refugees from Africa or Middle East. THEY are far more different.

Actually you can also listen to the song pretending that there ain't no irony at all - maybe it's a smart double-twist to have it streamed by mainstream media? "Neegri koht on Afrikaas." Maybe he is just agreeing? ;)

I was shown this video when visiting my friend Maria in Tallin although I cannot speak Estonian as a I'm British I got the humour. Very funny.

Ask any dane, norwegian or swede if estonia is scandi and they will laugh, even if you ask if finland is scandi most will agree that they dont care if they WANT to call themselves scandi, but the true scandis are the Kalmar union.

Estonians aren't scandinavian. Nobody is saying that they are. The only nations that are scandinavian are the one on the scandinavian peninsula (and denmark). However, Estonia is nordic.

@Juho Mäkinen well Estonian and Finnish languages are very similar. During that 2 years I realized that Estonia is indeed not Scandinavian. Estonia can't be a nordic country due to it being way less wealthy but it does have almost an identical culture to finland. Danish and Swedish kings did rule Estonia for hundreds of years.

@@Spicelot similarity is superficial. There's so much German, Swedish and Russian (plus artificial words created by linguists) in modern Estonian that for Finnish, it's 75% gibberish with few familiar words here and there.

This translation is pretty bad...
