Tufting a Rug (MY PROCESS)
Ойын-сауық
Today I use my cut pile tufting gun to tuft a 2ft square rug start to finish!
In this video, I show you how I:
00:00 Intro
00:23 Primary Fabric/Stretch the Frame
01:20 Develop A Plan
02:11 Tuft
04:37 Adhesive
05:27 Waterfall Binding
07:30 Backing
08:19 FINISHED!
This was my first time doing a waterfall binding on one of my tufted rugs. Usually, I whip stitch an edge around the entire rug, which, looks great and feels great, but it takes SO LONG.
This waterfall binding technique got the job done in LITERALLY 1/20th the time it would have taken me to whip stitch the whole thing!
There are also companies that specialize in binding/finishing rugs (in most major cities) however I have not yet explored this option. The one I investigated here in Minneapolis Minnesota told me they charge about $3-5 per linear foot of binding. So, for the rug I made today (2ftx2ft)(8ft parameter) They'd charge something like $25-40 to bind. I'm sure that'd look amazing, but it's not worth the money for me at this point :---)
If the video didn't make it clear, I like to save as much money as possible without compromising quality. This is why I used burlap as my primary fabric and cheap cotton canvas as my secondary fabric (backing)
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE HIGHEST QUALITY HAND TUFTED RUG, I will make a video especially for you very soon, but for now here are some tips:
- Use cotton yarn.
(I use acrylic yarn which is not as soft and frays a bit more (but cheaper!)
- Use industry-specific tufting monks cloth as your primary fabric
- Using two coats of flooring adhesive would probably help!
- Use a thicker, more expensive fabric as a backing
- Have a professional third party company do the binding
- Go slow while you tuft! try to tuft the back as uniform as possible so the yarn in front is consistent with no thick or thin patches
MUSIC CREDITS:
- First song was made by me
- Second song was made by my friend Yiction

Beautiful. And nice handy tool you have. Many moons ago, there was an elderly lady that lived across from our house. She was a Renaissance woman - made her own bread, churned her butter, had a well where she drew water. And she also made beautiful rugs, braided and tufted. She taught me a lot about crafty things. We would get burlap sacks from the feed store and make rugs with them. Elderly folks are beautiful people who can teach us how to live a simple life.
Thank you for taking a simple approach to teaching, it really helps! Most other channel's overcomplicate everything

so when I tuft the thread keeps coming out of my gun what do you put the yarn on so it will continuously thread? also the burlap gets huge holes in it and it falls apart what do i do for that?
@FlavorWorld
3 жыл бұрын
hello!!! ok long comment inbound. i hope to answer all your questions: having your yarn feed continuously is suuuuper important to having a good time tufting. If you using yarn bundles, make sure you're starting the bundle the correct way, most people dont know you can pull the strand from the INSIDE of the bundle and itll feed out continuously. Here's a quick video showing that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKSf3Nubo9fadNo.html And with the holes in your burlap, usually one of these things is what is going wrong: 1. you aren't pressing firmly enough with the gun against the fabric 2. youre using your gun with wrong technique (make sure its at a 90 degree angle with the fabric and that you always point it in the direction its traveling) 3. your yarn isnt feeding properly (reduce the friction of it!) 4. your fabric isnt stretched tight enough Hope this helps : )
Great job. I just find watching people be creative is so satisfying. I guess I’m into rug making videos now.

This was very cool. The method you showed put it into perspective for me. What kind of tufting gun and yarn do you use?
@FlavorWorld
3 жыл бұрын
@@joefahy4806 Hey dude!!! Im using 7oz acrylic yarn!!! Wool is nicer, but a fair bit more expensive. I have zero complaints with acrylic yarn for rugs! Also worth noting that i use two strands of yarn at one time. This makes a huge difference in the final products. If i use just one strand its very inconsistent and thin. The gun can handle up to 4(ish) strands at a time!!!

@FlavorWorld

Do you have the carpet tack strips? if yes, but its STILL slipping off, then you need to check which way your strips are facing because the nails sticking out of them are facing a certain direction! If they are angled inward, itll slip off! but if they are angled outward It'll grip the fabric and hold it!!!

@@nicktaylor1649 haha yes crafters unite! i just like to make things. but yea menards is a midwest thing, so, howdy my fellow mid western
I just got my gun two hours ago and started practicing! I’m just wondering why I see everyone using two yarns instead of just one!?

The gun can handle 1-4ish strands of regular yarn, or some thicker yarn. When i use just 1 strand, its harder for me to get an even feeling top side, the whole rug feels thinner, AND possibly worst of all the strand of yarn easily de-threads and falls out of the gun (more of a problem with cut pile than loop pile) Im really enjoying using 2 strands! You can even use different colors for some cool effects
