    Wow! This is great work! Just came across your video. I’d like to start making cushion covers like you did(I’m glad I know how to sew😊). But I’d like to start off with just tufting a few areas on the cover (maybe a flower or two) rather than filling it up completely like you did-atleast until I get better at it! As someone who has never done tufting before(I am quick to learn things), I have a few questions: Does it matter what fabric I use? Or can I use just about any fabric with any type of yarn? What’s the best gun and products I have to use? Also, I am in Uganda, Africa and will obviously have to ship the items from abroad but I’d really like to do this for some extra income! I’d appreciate your advice on the above! 🙏🏾

  • @CraigMillerStudio

    @CraigMillerStudio

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there! Thank you!! To answer your questions, yes you need to use a primary backing fabric like the one I used here. I don’t think the machine will work properly with other fabrics. But you can use pretty much any yarn! I always recommend wool since it’s the best quality and easiest to work with in my opinion. I’ve purchased almost all of my supplies from Tuft the World. They have great beginner resources for getting started!

    I buy my yarn from tuftinggun.com ! I typically oil my machine at the beginning and end of each project, and every once in a while throughout each project. I don't really have a set schedule that I follow, I just try to pay attention to when there's a lot of fiber build up and it seems like it needs to be cleaned/oiled!

    Do you sew the cotton fabric to the tufting cloth left on the edge of the piece or do you sew the cotton fabric to the edges that have been tufted and glued? I have minimal sewing experience so I’m wondering if the tufting fabric is sturdy enough to be sewn. Thank you!

  • @CraigMillerStudio

    @CraigMillerStudio

    Жыл бұрын

    I tried to sew as close as I could to the tufted portion so that there wouldn't be a weird gap between the cotton fabric and the yarn, if that makes sense. It's tricky because once the adhesive dries on the back of the rug it gets very hard, so you can't really sew through that part. To make it easier I would recommend not letting any glue get on the backing fabric outside of the tufted portion so you can get closer to that edge. I hope that helps!

    Here are my general rug care guidelines! - Vacuum or hand brush your rug as needed. If your vacuum has an adjustable suction option, use on a low level. - Gently blot to remove stains using a cloth, lukewarm water, and possibly a ph-neutral + bleach-free cleaner for stubborn stains. - Avoid getting your rug overly wet to preserve the glue binding. Do not use in damp environments. - Never machine wash, dry clean, or use harsh chemicals on your rug.

    You have to sew over a portion of the yarn so that there isn’t a gap! I’ve found that it helps a lot to shave down the outer edge to get it as flat / thin as you can so it’s easier to go over. It probably depends on your machine though!

  • @CraigMillerStudio

    The first pass of sewing was with a zigzag stitch to bind the edges of the rug backing! That helps prevent fraying. The second pass was to attach the cloth, which I wanted to sew as close to the actual tufted portion as possible to avoid having a gap.
