Tufted Pillow Making Process
Here's a behind the scenes look at the process of making some tufted pillows! This is the first time I've used rug tufting for this format, and it was so so fun :-) Enjoy!

I absolutely love your designs! I really struggle with sewing close enough to the tufted piece when sewing, do you have any tips on sewing as close as possible? I think it’s because of the thickness that I struggle
@CraigMillerStudio
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! It's definitely a challenge with how thick the tufted sections are. I found that it helps to go slowly and use the hand wheel as needed :-) I'm sure having an industrial type machine would also help, but that isn't a necessity!

Wow! This is great work! Just came across your video. I’d like to start making cushion covers like you did(I’m glad I know how to sew😊). But I’d like to start off with just tufting a few areas on the cover (maybe a flower or two) rather than filling it up completely like you did-atleast until I get better at it! As someone who has never done tufting before(I am quick to learn things), I have a few questions: Does it matter what fabric I use? Or can I use just about any fabric with any type of yarn? What’s the best gun and products I have to use? Also, I am in Uganda, Africa and will obviously have to ship the items from abroad but I’d really like to do this for some extra income! I’d appreciate your advice on the above! 🙏🏾

Hi there! Thank you!! To answer your questions, yes you need to use a primary backing fabric like the one I used here. I don’t think the machine will work properly with other fabrics. But you can use pretty much any yarn! I always recommend wool since it’s the best quality and easiest to work with in my opinion. I’ve purchased almost all of my supplies from Tuft the World. They have great beginner resources for getting started!

So this was 2 years ago i see you did not use glue to keep the yarn in tack atleast i didnt see any. So how is it holding up? Also how would it hold up in a business on a couch like tattoo shop and with kids? ❤

Where do you buy your yarns and how often you put oil in the gun
@CraigMillerStudio
2 жыл бұрын
I buy my yarn from tuftinggun.com ! I typically oil my machine at the beginning and end of each project, and every once in a while throughout each project. I don't really have a set schedule that I follow, I just try to pay attention to when there's a lot of fiber build up and it seems like it needs to be cleaned/oiled!
Excelente trabajo! Una pregunta, me gustaría hacer un bastidor de madera como el que usas, puedes darme medidas del mismo y de su base?

Do you sew the cotton fabric to the tufting cloth left on the edge of the piece or do you sew the cotton fabric to the edges that have been tufted and glued? I have minimal sewing experience so I’m wondering if the tufting fabric is sturdy enough to be sewn. Thank you!
@CraigMillerStudio
Жыл бұрын
I tried to sew as close as I could to the tufted portion so that there wouldn't be a weird gap between the cotton fabric and the yarn, if that makes sense. It's tricky because once the adhesive dries on the back of the rug it gets very hard, so you can't really sew through that part. To make it easier I would recommend not letting any glue get on the backing fabric outside of the tufted portion so you can get closer to that edge. I hope that helps!

Great idea! I just made my very first rug but I think I will also try to make pillows. Do you have any tips? :)
@CraigMillerStudio
Жыл бұрын
Congrats on your first rug!! The main difference with making a pillow in my opinion is being really careful about measurements, and trying not to distort the piece as you work on it. It’ll help make the construction portion a lot easier :)
Hey there, What was the liquid/oil you put on your gun at the beginning?

is pva glue suitable for washing the pillow cases? won't it melt on contact with water and soap? I LOVE your work! so NEAT and great designs, too!

Hello, I have a few questions please. Glue is not a bit toxic to use as a cushion? If we want to sell cushions, will it be legal? Or should we use non-toxic glue if it exists? And in terms of washing, how is it going? Is it possible to wash in a machine?
@CraigMillerStudio
Жыл бұрын
Hey!! The adhesive that I used here is just an Elmer’s PVA which is non-toxic. You can’t machine wash it though unfortunately, the glue would break down. I recommend spot cleaning lightly as needed!

What kind of recommendation do you give your customers in how to clean the pillows?

Here are my general rug care guidelines! - Vacuum or hand brush your rug as needed. If your vacuum has an adjustable suction option, use on a low level. - Gently blot to remove stains using a cloth, lukewarm water, and possibly a ph-neutral + bleach-free cleaner for stubborn stains. - Avoid getting your rug overly wet to preserve the glue binding. Do not use in damp environments. - Never machine wash, dry clean, or use harsh chemicals on your rug.

Hello. I have a question. Would like to make a wool blanket out of wool rowing! Not from yarn! It is fluffy and soft, and looks like a sheep fleece! Is it possible to make one using this machine? If yes,please consult me of what to get, how to work etc. Will be appreciated if you can help with answering

I don’t have any experience with that, but my guess would be probably not!
I do not know how to work with it, it cuts the thread from both sides. How can I solve this problem? Can you help me?

How do you prevent from having a border of tufting cloth showing around the piece?
@CraigMillerStudio
3 ай бұрын
You have to sew over a portion of the yarn so that there isn’t a gap! I’ve found that it helps a lot to shave down the outer edge to get it as flat / thin as you can so it’s easier to go over. It probably depends on your machine though!
Where’d you get your hand chair?
@CraigMillerStudio

HandShapedChairs on Etsy!
Why did you see the tufted piece and then see it again to the cloth backing? Is it not a good idea to just sew them together all at the same time?
@CraigMillerStudio
6 ай бұрын
The first pass of sewing was with a zigzag stitch to bind the edges of the rug backing! That helps prevent fraying. The second pass was to attach the cloth, which I wanted to sew as close to the actual tufted portion as possible to avoid having a gap.

@@olaola5889 Of course! I don't speak Spanish well so I'm using Google translate haha. I hope I'm interpreting your comments correctly :-) I used an Elmer's PVA glue for this project! I would not machine wash these, I recommend spot cleaning by hand only. As far as yarn types I use pretty much exclusively wool yarn. It's much easier to work with, and the final product will last much longer than acrylic yarn. Best of luck getting into tufting, I hope you love it!
