When they heard this, they said, "No, not so!" But he looked at them and said, "What then is the meaning of what is written (Psalm 118:22): The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone? Whoever falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but whoever it falls on will be crushed to pieces" (20:17-18). He was talking about the Jews who rejected him and did not recognize him as their Messiah. He will be broken to pieces, which is the destruction of their old covenant age, but whoever rejects him will be judged and lose his life. In the Jewish-Roman wars of 66-70 AD, this became a bitter reality!

As the church of Jesus Christ, you stand on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. The cornerstone or head of the corner that supports and holds these buildings together is Jesus Christ (Eph 2:20-22). Christ is the cornerstone - the foundation of the apostles' teaching.
