I am a physician. The solution to this problem is simple: Bring back the large, but humane, psychiatric hospitals. For those addicts who can be successfully treated, then do so and release. For those schizophrenics and like kind who can be successfully treated, then do so and release. For those incurable addicts and incurably afflicted psychiatrically diseased, keep as inpatients for longterm domiciliary care. For those sane, non-diseased homeless who just need a job and a hand-up, medically train them and hire them to man/run the hospitals, caring for the thousands of their fellows who cannot care for themselves due to disease. The diseased are cared for, the curable are cured, the jobless are employed, and the streets are cleared.

I and many other people who have worked in psychiatric hospitals, detoxes, and homeless shelters have been saying this for years. Many of the chronically mentally ill cannot be housed in anything less than a 24/7 supervised setting.

It’s an excellent idea but unfortunately, the closing of some of these large psychiatric facilities over 25 years ago (Toronto) kicked started part of the problem. The health system has been a mess for decades and now politicians want to blame it all on Covid! That’s rubbish! We all know these draconian lockdown measures have driven more people onto the streets due to ‘out of control’ addictions and unsupported mental health problems. Our incompetence has definitely added to this human catastrophe!

I lost my job one of many times and was having a difficult time finding work and fell behind on my child support payments and was in danger of getting an arrest warrant put out for me. So I called the government and asked if there was a program or some way I could work picking up trash beside the road or off the streets just to go to the child support. They said no there was no such a thing. They said once I get arrested I'd be doing it for free.... Your government doesn't care for you. We have allowed it to get to big.

It is not one specific program but the ideas that are enacted through policy over several years by the left. Which I have seen first hand in Portland. I used to be drug addicted, was lazy and “checked out” for many years -was completely self absorbed. Then I met Jesus Christ who changed my entire life. Became sober, started reading many books and self educating in finance and real estate.. and got into entry level sales. Became an entrepreneur and started a business ten years ago in software sales. The American dream is almost dead thanks to the liberal policies that are ransacking our states. Proof is in the pudding. But it can be resurrected for those who are willing to take personal responsibility. The fact is, every business in America is hiring. And the majority (by far the majority) of homeless people in America have made a series of mistakes in a large pattern because they haven’t grown up, become aware of their mistakes and continue to make those mistakes over and over. They do not look for the opportunity that God has placed right in front of them. I will admit that a lot of these mistakes are due to the devil lying and taking over people’s minds, which is very real, as I ran with the devil for half my life, many of the mistakes are from terrible parenting and generation curses of divorce, single parent homes, Dads that bailed out of parenting etc- complex issues sure..however.. I am living proof that addiction can be overcome if we are willing to humble ourselves before the Lord and submit to him. His ways are so much greater than ours. Jesus loves you and he is waiting for you to repent and he offers everlasting life as a free gift that no one can earn! It’s free! Just accept it! Put your trust in what he did on the cross for you today! He will change you from the inside out! Proverbs 3:5 “ Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him and he will make your path straight.”

Politicians push billions to organizations that are supposed to help the homeless. The organizations and the employees rely on the politicians for their funding so they turn around and contribute money back to the politicians election funds. Other times they put family members of the politicians on the boards of the organizations. The other way is the money that is supposed to be spent on building housing. LA raised $1.5 billion to build housing for the homeless. They ended up only building only a few hundred units at over $500k per unit. Or they buy buildings at market rate. Tucker touched on this. Usually these buildings are owned or were built by people connected to the politicians. They turn around and find the politicians campaign and other stuff. That’s why homelessness will never end. It makes too much money for the organizations that “help” the homeless, politicians, and those that are well connected.

I am technically homeless myself and I have to tell you it is easier, safer, healthier, and better to live on the streets than go to a shelter. It is a fact that there are criminal activities that go on in the shelters, but no reporters ever seem to report on these activities. Also, honest people who would benefit from these clean new apartments don't even qualify over addicts and/or people who "know" people. The whole system is corrupt. Cities have turned the homeless problem into a bussines opportunity to benefit themselves and obtain them votes under the guise of "helping" the homeless.

As a person who works with the homeless, I can tell you that a very small percentage are homeless very temporarily or through no fault of their own. Often, they’re back on their feet relatively quickly. On the other hand, the vast majority are homeless by choice. Even when shelter is offered, they prefer camping out so they can continue their substance abuse. If politicians really wanted to make a difference, they’d fund substance abuse treatment and mental healthcare instead of providing housing and drug paraphernalia to addicts. EDIT: Offering services obviously doesn’t mean the homeless with accept. If they don’t accept, no $ going out. But buying half-million $ drug dens for each person is insane!

We need social workers who accompany the people on their way to a new life and support them if necessary. What we don't need are luxury apartments or bloody needles on children's way to school. Where do you think these people will go? Mexico? Canada? Maybe we should glad they are where they are instead of roaming the streets of middle America and camping in some soybean or wheat field.

I have lived and worked in Seattle for the last 30 years and the homeless problem has definitely gotten to be a hazard to the taxpayers there..and it’s escalating.. which is why we sold most of our assets in that state and moved to a small community in eastern Az ..if you stay in these blue cities and pay taxes your part of the problem.. the only way these policy makers will learn is if they lose the people paying the taxes.. don’t be part of the problem..

Exactly, Buckhead in Atlanta got tired of the crime and is becoming their own city. They will have their own police department. Only when the well of money from taxes runs dry, which means no more funds for public assistance/programs, and no more funds for special interest pet projects, which means jeopardizing their popularity and re-election prospects, will they consider changing course.

Those problems don't change because now they have a view of Puget Sound. So, you have all these unbalanced criminals now in high-price neighborhoods, driving down property values so investment firms and banks can swoop in. This is just a new version of an old tactic the banksters used to pull where they'd buy a property in a neighborhood, rent it cheap to a black family, and then inform the rest of the neighborhood that their property values were going down as a result so they'd better sell now. It's the first step in gentrification: get rid of the people already there. Sadly, even the minority households they'd exploit would end up getting pushed out once they were no longer useful. As soon as the big interests get enough property in these areas, watch how fast the Puget Sound view apartments are no longer zoned for use as homeless shelters.

kate Smith: "I simply do not understand the kind of thinking that can lead to these ridiculous and destructive policies." It's easy to understand. The biggest threat to leftist control freaks is the middle class. This is their textbook approach to the destruction of the middle class. Every American who has served, fought, and sacrificed for the rights and liberty of all, is being disrespected by the rotten psychopaths who have hijacked our federal government.

As a heroin addict, if a city made it easier to do drugs, I still wouldn't be clean. The ONLY reason I finally straightened up is because it was horrible living that way. Giving them homes and clean places to do it is enabling on a scale of which I've never seen.

Depending on how much you make, you can be paying 50%+.. Considering all the taxes that exist, which most people probably don't even know, people are definitely paying more than 50% in taxes. And that doesn't even include inflation. You can't even die without being taxed.

The homelessness problem could be greatly reduced by doing these two simple steps: 1) Offer the bums who are able-bodied and under 65 a job that pays the lowest rent in town. 2) If they refuse, then it's either prison or the madhouse. That's it. Enforce this policy, and you'll be getting rid of the majority of your bums in a matter of weeks.

Yeah, how did Trump get rich? Maybe our government should reduce this extreme case of income inequality in the US. For the first time in American history, the 400 wealthiest people paid a lower tax rate than any other group thanks to Trump. Yet FOX criticizes senators that propose to tax wealthy at least proportion to the middle class. And if you do some research the homeless population increased during Trump administration.

They are doing that in Austin, buying older hotels and buildings, but they're paying sometimes 10x what the place is worth. Once again screwing the taxpayers for little or no payoff. They recently paid over 8 million dollars for an old motel that will house less than 20 people when it's done being renovated. Commies run Austin right now.
