Tubeless Tutorial For Sur Ron

In today's video we convert the rear Sur Ron rim to tubeless set up. I kept it cheap for this video because I wanted to see if the mountain bike method would work but the best option is definitely Tubliss 2.0. I haven't done any hard riding at low pressures yet but as of posting this video there have been no failures.

    Good on you guys for experimenting with the simple approach to tubeless. I don't think the average rider is gonna spin the tire loose but I guess time will tell how it works out. I ran a simple set up like that for many years on various KTM 2 and 4 four stokes. I ran a trials tire and sealed spokes with sealant and duct tape.I didn't even run sealant inside the tire. I could run as little as 8psi and never had rim de-bead or spin. If the bike sat for a while sure it would lose some air but so do most tubes. I did plenty of Nor-Cal rocky technical trail riding as well as high speed paved twisties....Just always carry a tube in case

    I run hare scrambles in Florida and Montana...and always use low air pressure like 10 to 12 lbs also in my dirt bikes. Another suggestion before going full tubeless, is to remove your valve core and just add say 2 or 3 ounces of Stan's or any sealant. It works great and really helps prevent pinch flats which are notorious in FL sand and MT light snow roots, etc... Then if you ever do rip your valve or such, you can do the tubeless route then. I get tons of extra life from my tubes when doing that. Also, don't spread the sealant in the tire on your tubeless setup until after you set the bead. The latex or sealant gets in-between the bead and rim and latex rolls into little balls as it dries. So you don't want it to leak out and make a mess and have less in the tire anyhow, so just set the bead then spin and bounce your tire...will work way better. Happy trails and thx for the great videos.

    Great tutorial. Well described. I have tried 4 different sealants, Stans, Orange, AmerSeal, and Slime. Totally honest, SLIME works best (cheapest, easiest to get, doesn't dry out and turn to snot), both for my Enduro 2 stroke WITH Tubliss 2.0, and my mountain bike(s). I threw about 6 ounces of Slime into the Enduro Tubliss 2 while mounting the inner liner and tire, and I do NOT have any air loss (over 2 years running and a few tires later). But when I convert the Sur Ron to tubeless this spring, I am going to try a mousse for the first time. Wish me luck! Definitely looking into getting an 18 inch rear wheel made too. If a 3.5 inch tire fits, I would love that low pressure for climbing and ultimate traction.

    While I run the Tubliss 2.0, I still watched this all the way through. One suggestion, when putting the sealant in, keep your wheel on the truing stand and spin it after. Much better distribution. If you don't have a stand put it back on the bike and run at low speed for a bit. Hopefully you get a good seal first try. Thanks for putting out the content. Eagerly awaiting the next run of controllers.

    @@Seldoff So far great. It's rainy season here in Hawaii and the mud can be deep, sticky, and sloppy or thin over hardpack and slick as snot. Im running an 18"x 3.50" rear as are most of the guys i ride with. Yesterday was really wet and i rode at about 4 psi. Other guys have done entire rides of 2+ hours at 0 psi. This is over roots and rocks with plenty of climbs and descents. No flats or rim damage yet. The inner high pressure tube keeps everything locked in place. The wheel setup was a game changer. Spinning the rear is a thing of the past. You lose a little bit of the initial punch on takeoff, but the torque that tire puts to the ground is amazing. I can crawl up stuff i had to hit full speed to make before.

    @@skyungjae yeah the wheels on MtB can take some serious abuse if built right, but not a lot of margin for error vs an MX wheel. The tires are a massive difference in bead and sidewall construction which would cause a lot of problems for fast people in rocks and corners and stuff on a 110lb bike, heck I can make a tubeless MTB tire burp in a fast corner or rock garden on my 30lb mountain bike. a 21”/17” full sized motocross wheel setup is crazy overkill for the SurRon, adding a ton of weight in the worst place. I can see why there are so many variations everyone is trying out. I’m building up a new wheelset right now, just waiting for spokes and I think I’ve nailed the best setup. More to come once it’s built...

Was there a reason you choose to use one over the other ? Thanks

    Hey guys! So I gave that tubeless setup a try. I managed to get one tyre set up, inflating it at a car tyre shop and rode a couple of times with it. The second wheel there's no way to seat the tyre, I wonder whether my compressor (170L/min at 110psi) is powerful enough to seat the tyre. Looks like your compressor is huge (at least the tank), maybe that helps.

  • @emotobros

    @emotobros

    3 жыл бұрын

    You shouldn’t need to go above 35 PSI to seat, I’ve tried and learned the hard way with a massive explosion and a loss of hearing for a while! What helps most is lubrication on the bead. We didn’t need it in this video but we recommend using that stuff that they put on car tires to get the bead to seat. That should do the trick 🤘🏽

  • @emotobros

    @emotobros

    3 жыл бұрын

    The tire does need to be relatively in place on the rim. The tires I used had a pretty thick sidewall so they naturally popped into a position on the rim that allowed for a pretty easy inflation. I would suggest bouncing it around to try and get a good centering seal to begin with and it never hearts to put in more sealant. Although the actually pressure of your air compressor doesn’t need to go over 35 psi, you do need a high enough flow rate to push it out. While my compressor was able to do this it’s possible some compressors aren’t able to push enough air fast enough. If you are trying to inflate it you can usually see where sealant is flowing out from a bad seal. I would try targeting problem areas by pushing on the outside of the tire into the rim to help the tire seat on the bead.

    There’s no way to put a dirt bike fender on it because they are not inverted forks and the cross support on the lowers would come up and hit the fender. A fender needs to be mounted to the lowers, most mountain bikers do this with zip ties, and a thin plastic or laminated cardboard cutout. I’ve done it with a cardboard from a box of beer when I had a mountain bike

    I have put probably 20 miles on now, running like 25 psi with no issues. If I go off-road and need more traction I will probably try out 15 psi. I imagine that at 15 psi the tire will probably slip around the rim but should stay on. Definitely works, not as good as tubliss but at the end of the day it limits pinch and punctures which is enough justification for me. Especially when it costs about as much as a new tube.

    I think with your aggressive riding you are going to have problems with the tire slipping on the rim running the MTB version of tubeless. You only have a 19” rim in the rear vs a 27/29 and that’s a loss of 30% surface area for the tire to grab the metal rim and stay in place. But the bigger problem is on MTB we run 25 psi or more pressing the tire against the rim. I think you’ll find this setup is not going to work and you’ll be buying a tubliss kit which are absolutely fantastic, I run them on my moto bikes. There is also a problem with tubliss on SurRon, the rim used is much more narrow than a 19” rear motocross rim (by 20mm) which the system was designed for.

Many years racing the GNCC'S we would use NUETECH TUBLISS set up. RIM locks have to use a tube whitch sucks woods racing because of pinch flats. NUETECH uses a really cool design. just something to think about. My rims don't come with a bead lock hole I leave this to customers to decide whether or not they need one. Can easily be done.
