I thought the Neumann u67 had the smoothest and richest sound. It also felt the most in your face IMO. I own the MA 1000 and it’s an awesome mic.

Jim - loved the shootout - thanks for including the MA-1000. FYI - for comparison to a U67, our MA-300 would be a closer fit. The MA-1000 is David Royer's take on a 251.

I need a new vocal mic and now I’m standing between u87 and ma 1000. would u recommend me the ma 1000 for rnb and pop vocals or would u say the Neumann u87 is a safer Choice ?? It’s such a hard decision for me. Don’t wanna make a mistake with so much money…

I liked the female sound of the female vocal on the 386 and the male vocal on both the RNT and the u67 but the u67 had just a slight edge over the RNT. Thanks for this shoot out.

MA1000 is my favorite, very upfront and natural sounding without any flaws or unnecessary hyped frequencies.

The best mic to use is the one you have! All of these mics are great.

I personally like whatever magic stardust Mojave is sprinkling in their microphones, but I will say, all of these mics are excellent but also pretty high end. Subtle differences down to taste and preferences. Tbh I hadn't even heard the RNT before and I quite liked it, but I just looked and it definitely has the price tag to go with it. I have used other less expensive SE mics and really loved them. But the same could be said for the Mojave. All of these mics here are getting into the more expensive category. They all have that in common. Also all of these manufacturers offer less expensive mics, and most even offer less expensive tube mics. I feel like this price range is getting into that expensive final 10% better territory but not Into the collector mythical expensive category. Once you get over a center threshold the price goes up more than the increase in the quality of the sound, to me at least. Great demo though. I could have dealt with hearing both processed and raw tracks as well.

For me this is obvious: the Mojave sounds the warmest and a little more compressed (not a valuation, just an observation). The SE RNT carves out the most details. Impressive. Keep in mind. You can adapt tonal adjustments e.g. for lows and highs easyly in the digital domain with an linear phase eq plugin without changing the character.

Wanna say that 386 was the best followed by the u67 more dark rather then bright also gives it that round low end vibe witch gives it a smooth tone

Alex Ribeiro I thought so too. It has a nice balance and detail. I think it would sound great through a 1073, Burl preamp that was being pushed a bit.

Mind blowing review. Which of these mic do you prefer.

Id go with the Eden because of the 3-in-1, price range, and it soothes the slight raspy tones.

u67 is best mic on male vocal for mee... mojavi super clean sound i like the smooth and the ultra dynamic but i think less musical overall... i think u67 most balance on frequency response and stable dynamic like compression but free, also nice harmonics color ,very sweet on my opinion... every mic on this shootout video are very impressive - "A-list" for sure! thank you very pro shootout and very helpful.

Absolutely!

All of these are good TBH and would work great. I liked the RNT by SE because of the great clarity. I could see rolling off a bit off the high end or boosting the mids if needed.

Liked the air on the MA1000. Nothing is hyped in the mids. It may actually work better for more vocalists than the grainy knockoffs. I own a MA200 and it’s great for a baritone and airy vocals. It stacks vocals incredibly well.

I agree with your take. The U67 seemed to be more even throughout the range of both your performances. The Lauten definitely had an edge and the Neve was very clear. I thought your voice sounded better through the MA-1000, and the lady's (name?) through the Lauten or the Neve. With a voice like hers, my appreciation meter goes up with the crystal-like highs hence my choice of the 1)Lauten and 2) the SE RNT - but these are my subjective preferences. Also, I would like to compliment you on the fine quality of your video sir, and thank you..

SE and MA 1000 was best on male vox. SE was best on female vox. The Lauten was to forward in the mids, especially on the female vox.

I think it comes down to the persons voice . For me the MA-1000 works best . By far the softest . I have a hi voice that tends to sound harsh with most condensers before tweaking it in post. So the softer the better. But with the MA-1000. Magic! With just the bass roll off and I'm done . No bullshit. And I don't think many male singers would use it without the bass roll off. And not in context you really can't make an accurate decision . They're all incredible mics. Thanks , I enjoyed it.

Thru the headphones I liked the U67, thru the monitors I liked the RNT. It’s a bit pristine here, I bet it would shine through a pushed 1073.

Eden sounds the cleanest and clearest.

The MA-1000 objectively captures the most detail at the transient level. It's not as musical as an Eden, but it is the most detailed of all these. Listen to the lip/mouth sounds of the singer. You can hear the air and the grinding of the lips like stroking a blown up balloon.

Mojave is the best sounding mic . Lauten is meeh. U67 is golden, SE is not bad. But the Mojave had it all. Great mic

U67 sounded the most natural by FAR.

I like the Mojave for the female, and the Lauten for the male. However, the U67 sounded good on both, just not the best on both, if that makes any sense. But we are talking very subtle differences here. I was surprised how much I didn't like the SE mic. I wanted to like it most because it bears the name of the King.

I felt that the Eden 386 microphone did very well with this shootout you get three different mics in One mic I like that microphone

The real trick was convincing Tony Stewart to sing Chandlier for this video

For me it's the U67 all day, certainly not for the price, what a nightmare - purely for the sibilance. The others are already have sibilance at a level and tone that would be prohibit EQ, after compression/de-essing, I've found it gets nightmarishly processed. A (slightly) cheaper way to get achieve a workable sibilance is a U87 going into a bombastic tube pre. I have some old german tube pres that do an amazing job, but the WA-MPX is up to the task.

Sounds like you need a gate in your chain… (hear that hum in the back ground?)

The 67 for me.

U67 is the King. Other mics are too harsh. It is very clear also to non trained ear with the "s" sounds. They sound like big transient spikes in other 3 mic and very unpleasant. Only on Neumann they sound smooth and soft.

Se Rnt is the best. Finish sound.

The Lauten uses capsule that is of chinese origin, they are the only one allowed to use it but still, at this kind of price point, we expect the capsule to be made in house and handmade.

Is it me or does the Mojave sound more nasal than the rest? A true 251 is hardly ever nasal. Eden sounded awesome

Truly loved the Mojave the most. Suuuuper pleasant low end and high end compared to all. SE was my least favorite

mohave 1000 is my favorite

The Neumann and the Eden mics did a much better job of mitigating the sharp “s” sounds.

To me, the RNT is a modern Marvel....

For me, the MA1000 wins. Hands down

U67 is clearly the winner hear for both vocal performances. The rnt is pretty great too. The eden didn’t perform all that great.

Well, that's HIGHLY subjective. It's been well demonstrated in many places that prevailing confirmation bias in pro audio leans heavily towards gear that is vintage and expensive. I love the 67 on many things, but not so much on vocals, and this test bears that out - at least for me. For the female voice, I prefer the RNT; for the male, the Mojave. Change the singer and/or room and my answers would likely change.

U67 sounds like a finished product, slightly compressed. The RNT is a close second.

Lauten Eden & the Se RTN stood out for me in both cases. If I had to pic one it would be the Lauten Eden hands down had the magic for me. Sad cuz I was really expecting the Vintage U67 to blow the rest away but it didn't even place. This is why you should keep doing these shootouts!😃🦧

Should of blind folded her, obviously she loved the neumann also cuz she's all up in it's cardioid. Lol. I liked her on the Eden, personally. I own a ma-1000 and use my Atlantis frequently with a Daking and Avalon 737sp

How do you like the sound of the ma-1000 into the Avalon? I’m between the 1000 or u87ai. I do VO work full time and was kind of concerned there would be too much tube sound from the 1000 into the Avalon

@@BUCKSHOTSTV the 1000 sounds dope! But I sold it, along w the u87. I do the same as you. Vox! You don't need a $3500 bro. 20 yrs ago yes! But now u can find mics in the $1k-$1500 range that sound better. Example I kept Lauten Atlantis and it is the superior mic to the two I just mentioned in my opinion. It sounds like u87 but has options as check it out on Sweetwater or KZread LAUTEN ATLANTIS You'll thank me later.
