Tuba Skinny: 'Broken-Hearted Blues' sung by the composer.
Музыка
This is the 'Broken-Hearted Blues' composed by Erika Lewis in 2009. It is included in two of the Albums recorded by Tuba Skinny - 'Tuba Skinny' and 'Blue Chime Stomp'. It is a quite different song from the other 'Broken-Hearted Blues', composed and recorded in 1937 by Lil Johnson; but Tuba Skinny and Erika have also recorded that song - on their Album entitled 'Garbage Man'.
The book 'Tuba Skinny and Shaye Cohn', updated for 2024, written by Pops Coffee, is available from Amazon, both as a paperback and as an eBook.

Thanks, Pops! This is making me think how grateful I am that Tuba Skinny has remained together for so long. Their body of work both together and separately is admirable. What great good fortune that they found each other!

Have t.s ever done potato head blues? Louis Armstrong solo is brilliant I'd love to hear Shay's interpretation of it..I'm Colin, an old horn player .I too am an ardent lover of tuba skinny..
Had no idea Erika wrote this, amazing talent. Just saw their concert in Three Oaks MI Acorn theater Sept 8, 2023. Got to meet them all and talk to them except Craig and Max. I was star struck!!!!!! When I saw Erika walk by as I was checking in to the theater early my jaw dropped, I couldn't speak lol. Later after the show we had a short but nice talk. I made Shaye laugh, a feather in my cap. I told her for weeks I had my ticket, and in anticipation of meeting them all, crapped my pants every day. She lost it laughing. I was just kidding of course, and she knew it. Only a former music teacher gets away that lol. But I always paid some personal praise to each member I talked to. These band members, as human beings, are the nicest folks to their fans. Man when do they have time to do laundry and stuff, that tour was relentless!
Erika, IS Tuba Skinny! 5 STARS! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Wow! I first came across these folks in 2009 on a Louisiana Tourism website. Been hooked ever since.

it took me until 10 years later!
Such a great performance! Erica really hollers out in all the right places. Ewan’s sound is also perfect for this tune.
This is a great piece and an incredible performance. Erika is in top form, and on the few occasions when she briefly launches into a four-beat on the bass drum, there's an exciting surge of energy. Ewan Bleach shows what a master of counterpoint and creative support he is. And it's strange that for a short time Shaye gets a sound that closely imitates a blues harp. Thanks for the posting.

Thanks, Gordon. Glad you enjoyed it; and thanks for adding to our appreciation with your observations.
Excellent.
Brilliant! Thank you so much. I wish you all the best.
Thanks! 😎
This is one of the rare TS live recordings that does justice to the tuba. Yay!
Such a great song. You’ve written a classic Erika. x
Hiya pops , sure is a big outfit , great bunch of folk. My preferred trombonist is by far Charlie Halleron , I've learnt so much from him and yay them lip trills and slurs are back with me , 3 yrs back at it this time with no teeth , Teeth !!! 😂 they just get in the way

Сколько раз слушаю этот блюз, столько раз удивляюсь тому, насколько тонко голос Erika строит мелодию.

Спасибо. Принимаю.
É ISSO ÉRIKA 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much for posting another recording of this great song. It's one of my favorites. (Just in case you haven't seen it, the "NOLA Jazz Museum" channel has uploaded a stream from Louisiana Music Factory's FACTORY FEST. Tuba Skinny (feat. wonderful Dennis Lichtman (NYC), clarinet) is on stage from 4:20:21. Unfortunately, again I can't provide the links, I've tried, but without success.)

Thank you for the information.
This must be an old performance, with Jason Lawrence and Ewan Bleach present and a very slim Erika.

Pops Coffe has previously posted several videos from this set, saying that it was recorded in 2018. To be more precise, this is probably spring (March). Clothing details are similar to those in the video of another set at the same location recorded by RaoulDuke504 at 3-12-18.

She looks to have gained about twenty pounds. It shows in her face.
Good one
Looks like Winter in Nawlins.
Much better with ten players. Two blowing reeds is really good. Erika’s drumming also makes a difference.

IMO yes I agree it can be "better" with at least a sax player but maybe not as authentic, it depends what you mean by "better" and by musical preference. I was a music teacher. Louis Armstrong's Hot 5 and 7 and bands like that I believe is what Tuba Skinny is doing. they have their own special refined sound, with good tone, at this point in their career and don't have to pay an extra musician just to be "bigger." Yes they become a different band in many ways with the bass drum and Erika's singing. She really kills it on the bass drum with accents and all, and her singing voice. I think Shaye is now playing a Bach cornet instead of a Yamaha and getting a real fine sound out of that, I just saw them live in a smaller venue for the first time, and let me tell you, on a rough tour, these people gave their all onstage, high energy and musicianship...toward the end of the 2nd set they played Jazz Battle super fast and killed it, no mistakes or let up on the tempo, and still had energy left to talk to their fans during meet and greet.
Thanks, Pops. Great song and great recording. I'm having trouble finding the name to this song....... kzread.info/dash/bejne/a5WcrrV9oc3FopM.html I filmed at DBA with Erika singing it, but just can't catch the name or find it anywhere else. I went through your database errata Thanks. Sweet Music Medicine

Yes, it's Tarheel Slim's 'Number Nine Train'.
Sound balance is terrible. I can barely hear Erika sing. But still great.
