Tsunami: the moment when everything changed - Full documentary in English
It is one of the memories that some wish they had never experienced. It killed more than 230,000 people, including 95 French people, destroyed the coasts of 13 countries and left thousands destitute. Fifteen years have passed and yet no one has forgotten the 2004 tsunami on the coasts of the Indian Ocean. December 26, 2004, 9:30 a.m. Hundreds of tourists lounge by the swimming pools of luxury hotels in Thailand. Some are having breakfast, others are finishing getting ready before going on an excursion. They are far from imagining that in a few minutes, nothing will remain of these heavenly places. Deep in the ocean, a cataclysm is brewing.
1000 kilometers away, in Indonesia, an earthquake of unprecedented intensity has just triggered a devastating tsunami. The earthquake is so strong, 9.3 on the Richter scale, that the earth rises, releasing a wave of incredible violence, exceeding 30 meters in height in certain places. This is the start of 6 hours of chaos. Hour by hour, minute by minute, from Indonesia to Thailand, via Sri Lanka, we will retrace the path of this tsunami. To understand this extraordinary phenomenon, 3D images will decipher the progress of the monster. Those who experienced the wave up close will tell us their story. We will penetrate the intimacy of their vacation and dive back into this cataclysm with them thanks to amateur films filmed 15 years ago.
This grumbling in the abysses of the Indian Ocean has come to remind us of the force of nature. It changed the lives of hundreds of French people who came to share family vacations or enjoy their honeymoon. Fifteen years later, what has become of the tsunami survivors? Charlotte, Philippe, Jean-Louis, Robin, Anne, David, Fabien, Guillaume, Yannick and Géraldine will tell us about their fears, their suffering, but also the tremendous survival instinct that allowed them to come out alive. At the heart of the tsunami, a journey into the intimacy of the survivors.

About 10-12 years ago I watched a video about a British girl who was on school break and spending it with her family on the beach. Suddenly she saw the ocean recede. She starting screaming to her family and everyone around them to get to higher ground, to run up into the mountains. She told her family that she had studied tsunamis in school just before the school break. She was just a little girl but she saved herself, her family and a lot of others, too!

Jesus, Almighty God 🙏 loves ❤ you more than you could possibly comprehend! He died for your sins, my sins and the sins of the world. Jesus stands with His arms opened wide, hoping and willing to heal, forgive, cleanse, strengthen and purify us. He is waiting to receive you with all love! He deeply desires a personal relationship with each and every one of us! RELATIONSHIP NOT RELIGION! Draw near to God and He will draw near to you, there is no repentance in the grave: There is no conversion after the last breath is drawn. Now is the time to believe in Christ and to lay hold of eternal life (J C Ryle). God has revealed Himself to us in the glory of creation, in the perfection of the written word and in personal experience of all who seek Him. Prayer 🙏 is giving our attention to God in a two-way Spiritual relationship where we talk to God and also listen to Him, you can pray 🙏 to God, through Jesus in the privacy of your own home (pray from your heart). God speaks to your heart because He loves you and wants to interact with you. So often we don't wait for God to speak after we've finished laying down our requests. Sadly, we don't watch for God to act in our lives. Did you know that God speaks to us through the Bible? The Holy scriptures Old and New Testaments, are the written Word of God, given by divine inspiration through holy men of God who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Holy Spirit is one of God's greatest gifts to us. Through the Holy Spirit we may know that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ! Scripture is always the voice of God in the general sense that God inspired the words of Scripture (2 Tim 3:16). God can also speak specifically to us through the Bible, by drawing a particular passage to our attention because the Word of God is living and active (Heb 4:12). We can say that it is God's primary way of speaking to us. Any other communication must be based and tested by what is taught in Scripture. The Holy Bible is God's guide for us, so we can reach Him, the only true living God and hear back from Him! Jesus is returning in the not so distant future!

The part of the story about elephants breaking chains and running to the hills is so impressive. The guide said they saved his life. Yet, while he is talking about it, behind him, many of these animals still chained and slaved into tourists attractions. Soooo, sooo sad. Let innocent animals be!

It's tourist fault. If we don't hire them, there will be no more animal abuse. Such a wonderful animal in horrible chains, it broke my heart. Not the rich tourists
Our oldest friends survived, just. One turned 91 two weeks ago and his wife turns 90 in 10 day time. They still talk about the two young Americans who physically ripped up bolted down benches to make a bridge for the people stranded on the rooftop of the low building that they had run to. They had to crawl along those benches to get access to a balcony of the taller building next door. They were on the beachfront and locals suddenly started calling out to everyone to run to safety. They were injured getting to the first building and making their way to the rooftop as water engulfed them. They said that the fear in the hectic moments reaching safety was bad but watching the ongoing devastation and aftermath would haunt them forever.
This whole disaster is hard to wrap your head around, but to hear that 2 survivors die from snake bites in the night is just maddening. They were so close to holding onto the rest of their lives. Mother nature is a beautiful beast.
It's so hard to believe that this coming December 26th, it will have been 20 years since this happened. Such strong, courageous people who survived this.

Kudos to the people who stayed behind to help. Sadly, tourists lost family & friends. Bravo to those tourists who showed sensitivity & concern for the local population.👏🏻

i'm sure ALL the tourists felt sensitivity and concern for the local population.. Not to take anything away from those who were left healthy and strong -- like surfers and paramedics -- and were able to get away from their everyday lives to stay and help. Which is not to say the children and the elderly and the injured and the parents and the grieving tourists with responsibilities back home did not feel sensitivity and concern for the locals. In a situation like that if you cannot contribute way way more than you are sucking out of a broken system it's better to get out of the way and certainly every embassy told every one of their citizens to do just that. Bravo too to those who had to leave without their children or their legs or their sanity in tact!

I remember watching a TV show interviewing a german family after the catastrophy. The mother had both children with her. When the wave hit them, she told, she had to decide to let one of them go, or all of them would drown. She decided to let the older child go, as he could swim compared to the small one. So she let him go, saving her and the smaller one. And as she hoped, the older one survived as well, even he was swept away by the water and was found later. Just imagine that horror decision you need to make to survive as a parent. I'm not eloquent enough in english, but this facing this decision is something I would never want to experience in my life. Either you all drown, or you let go one child, hoping he survives. And knowing that you would have to live with that, if he could not have make it. This is devastating.

I agree with you. I pray that she seeks counseling with someone trained to counsel trauma survivors. The lady needs to know that her mind and body were in a state of shock...she had been fighting for her life! She probably had a literal split second to react to seeing the child and it was simply not enough time for her brain to process what she was seeing and then, he was gone! It is not her fault.

My dear mother, who had grown up in Hawaii, when the news first trickled out on 12/26, knew that this was a massive disaster and we all fell silent before the evening meal. That certainty of hers, based on instinct and intuition, is what sticks with me all these decades later.
The guys with the monks made me cry❤
Thank you, this was extremely well done translation as well. I’ll be forever grateful for my life given that I was holidaying in Phuket 9 days prior to the Tsunami.
Incredibly moving but also uplifting given the response from survivors to help the injured & help rebuild rebuild the local communities.

I don’t quite have the words for the strength, courage, perseverance, persistence and even resilience that all the survivors who were interviewed experienced. I liked the story of the elephants. Of course they could sense something wrong they could probably hear it and smell it and feel the vibration of it through their paws on their feet and I'm glad they were able to free themselves. If that man didn't go running after them he wouldn't be alive today to tell the story. Treat them well.
