TSP #48 - Keithley 2460 Source Measure Unit (SMU) Review, Teardown and Experiments

In this episode Shahriar reviews the new Keithley 2460 Source Measure Unit (SMU). The Keithley 2460 shares all the touchscreen GUI advancements of the 2450 SMU and offers up to 100W of power in full four-quadrant operation. The combination of the 2450 and 2460 SMUs from Keithley offer a wide range of applications.
After a brief teardown of the instrument, several experiments are devised to demonstrate the TSP scripting as well as KickStart software capabilities. The experiments include LED failure modes, Geiger counter setup, Op-amp based voltage regulator characterization, temperature controller, non-linear transconductance emulation and data collection application.

Goodness, I have no idea what you were doing but it was fascinating...makes want to buy a couple of those units ! Personally I seem to take away much more from the repair videos but watch them all...thanks for all your hard work and it's obvious the enjoyment you get from your chosen field.

By far my favorite youTuber. Love all your videos mate! I really wish I had a job which required one of these so I could justify buying one. But thanks for putting these videos up so I can see what they can do. With your last video on the 2450's you could use an actuator to control the height of the coils(or anything) to get mechanical control over them as well, using one of the smu's to output a 4-20mA or 1-5v signal to a position controller. This would allow you to characterize many DUT's which need physical movement as well, fully automated. Very impressed with the power the scripting offers in these units.

I bought the 2450 because of your previous review and also enjoyed this video a lot and learned something new. One question: Can you make your script files available for download, so that we can learn the scripting language from you, based on your experiments. Thank you !

thanks for this , in labs where finance is an issue it would be good to know how well you can characterise components with just one 2460 , can you script and interact with other equipment and still perform a reasonable IV plot for a fet or a bjt with just one piece of equipment ? also even thought its a pulse type piece of equipment , can you pulse at such frequencies to charaterise small transformer behaviours?

Just wanted to point out that with a White LED, the safe operating voltage/current is not 2.6V... typically more like 3V. You want it to run around 20mA for full brightness.

Please do a video showcasing the usage and benefits of a battery-powered oscilloscope! Examples where using a ground-referenced scope might introduce errors, noise, or distortion, pure differential measurement, isolated measurements etc. That would be awesome!

Shahriar did you buy that Gas mantle from Grand Bazaar, Tehran 28 years ago in war period just in case for this video base on your description at 21:40? because we have the same one in our wall and still working. but we did't know this was radioactive and we were threatened all the time. wow no wonder we can't make as many children as our grandfathers made!!! by the way the video is great like always. just keep coming.

Hi, my procedure says to set the SMU to provide a load current of 250ma to a battery set. I did this and it charged the batteries instead of draining them. I am supposed to be draining the batteries according to the procedure. Is there a way to constantly drain 250ma from the batteries?

So if you have one of these you need no lab power supply anymore. Yay, saved the money on one instrument ;) Maybe a useless information, but if you use "export -> image" in Eagle instead of print screen you won't have the component crosshairs on the image (around 38:00).

Keithley 2450 review: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKdtudWNe7KzndI.html Thermoelectric cooling: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_cooling Once again a fascinating glimpse into equipment mere mortals such as I could never afford, along with a superb range of applications. At the risk of sounding churlish, would it be possible to include links to other relevant videos of yours in the notes. Also, a link to uncommon physical phenomena such as the Peltier effect would be the icing on The Signal Path cake. Thanks once again!
