TS-85 beaver trap modifying for Alaskan wolf

In this video I compare an assortment of wolf traps and show the modifications I made to convert this beaver trap into something strong enough to hold the Alaskan timber wolf. The Alaskan #9 is the standard by which I judge all wolf traps and I must say this modified TS-85 is right up there in size and strengh at a fraction of the cost. I make a mistake and call the Bridger a 750 when it really is a #5.

Looks like some great modifications . Some of those traps are just too expensive especially for the new trapper trying to get started in trapping. The modded beaver trap seems to be a good alternative.

Looks great. That’s just what I have done to my ts85 . The trap works good for so many different animals.

How about center plate the bottom. I would think that would be a must. Looks like you get something good going on. Good luck to ya.

As far as strength goes the bottom is double plated and very strong already, I would however prefer the swivel to be in the bottom center of the trap rather then on the end where they have it. Duke is now making a good wolf trap, the 850 pro series offset that requires little to no modifications at a cost of around $40.

Very impressive! How hard was it to get those extra springs in place? I have all MB-750 traps for wolves. I've only caught one wolf with them, but they are actually not bad for coyotes......fox....not so good!

I really like the MB-750 "Alaskan" traps. The springs are powerful, the jaws offset and they come with wolf swivels. The extra springs I put on the TS-85 are very strong but not difficult to install and my hope is they will bust up through the crusted snow.. I spent about an hour per trap making the spring retainers, welding the laminated jaws, and welding the offset "buttons" on the jaws. It was a bit of work but I think these will last a lifetime for me and will equal my #9 Alaskans.

Have you pinched any wolves in the modded ts 85's yet? If so, how did they hold up? Thanks!
