My personal favorite would have to be the Muramatsu with the wooden headjoint! I’ve now seen a couple people on social media trying out the hybrid flute and would love to hopefully try out different types at NFA later this week🙂

The wood one definitely. I used to play the chinese dizi before changing to the western flute. There's just that certain ring to a wood flute.
Hi Katie. Nice demo. I do think that the silver flute with the wooden head joint has a good warm rich sound at the lower end of the 1st register. Lovely quality. Very nice resonance. Great vid. Thanks. I think I will get myself a wooden head joint. Hooray. 😊😊😊😊😊
Of course it is subjective, but I definitely prefer the sound of the wood flutes. I found the Powell to be clean, and honest sounding. Great job katie.
They look so thicker then normal flutes like an bass flute
Her breath control amazes me, she can go for so long without breathing! Love you Katie you're an amazing musician!

The air stream is very focused with almost no air spilling over the mouthpiece... and so, air is not wasted... allowing for good durations without breathing...
I loved the Powell. I have played the Powell Mopane flute and loved it. I would like to hear you play it in a demonstration. I own a heavy wall DS and really liked how the Manecke sounded.
As someone who knows a bit about Irish flutes, but next to nothing about orchestral flutes, I was surprised how much the wooden ones sound like metal ones. There is a difference but not massive. Irish flutes with the simple fingering system sound very different. I expected that to be due to the wood but apparently not.
Appreciate being able to hear a wooden flute(s) in comparison for a metal one. The wooden headjoint is quite interesting, very nice tone

I honestly could not hear a difference. She had her own beautiful sound evenly on them all. To my ear at least
For performing 18th century music, I much prefer the traverso to the Boehm flute. For later music, the Boehm system rules, regardless of whether wood, metal, or plastic. Love the one-keyed flute.
I think the wooden head joint added a beautiful depth to the Muramatsu. I May look into trying one on my flute! I agree that the Powell wooden flute had a clearer and brighter sound than the Sankyo. Thanks for the demo!
The Sankyo stands out in upper-register-sweetness.
Those wooden flutes are flute-tastic!
Robert Bigio in the UK makes a variety of wooden flute headjoints, as well.
Thank you for the comparison. Each flute has its strength, but my preference was 1. Muramatsu DS + Manke head, 2. Powell wood (noble body resonance), 3. Sankyo wood (still typical Sankyo sound in wood!), 4. Muramatsu DS. In trying this type of sound, it would be interesting to hear Silver Bernhard Hammig and Yamaha wooden flutes. They both sound really beautiful and noble. (I own Johannes Hammig made by Bernhard Hammig-san, and tried Yamaha at a shop and really impressed).
I am surprised I thought I would hear more of a difference between the different flutes. I think there was a big difference between the Sankjo wood and the Powell wood, but between the Powell and the silver not so much. It's probably because you're embouchure is exactly the same on each of them so this is the Katieflute sound throughout.
Once I noticed the difference, I cannot get over the fact that metal flutes have metallic sound, louder but less warmer than wooden flutes. I like the warmer sound of wooden flutes.
Hey Katie, it would be sooo interesting if you could do a video in which you test the Lefreque sound Bridge. These tools are also available at the FCNY! I would be interested in your opinion!
The Powell 16013 and i liked most the sound of the muramatsu w/ the mancke headjoint..😊
The wooden Sankyo flute sounds best by far.
They all sounded good, but I'd go with the Muramatsu, + the wooden head joint. Nice sound. I am saving for a Muramatsu right now! :-D
In the hands of a very specific player, that Powell flute has the confidence and arrogance of Bruce Lee... and will challenge even a flute costing 5 times as much. I saw this happen in a masterclass in Switzerland a couple years ago. Mind-Blown.
I liked the Powell flute better of the two wooden flutes, but I think the wooden head joint on the silver flute makes an amazing sound that is warmer than the silver alone, but brighter than the wooden flutes. So, a very nice cross between the two types of materials. I think a wooden head joint would be a great addition to your collection.
Gosh that Powell is out of this world
The wooden flutes have such a rich tone. 😍⌚
I love the wooden flutes -- beautiful with a very "old-fashioned" sound. My daughter has decided she wants to join the band and play the flute next year. She found your videos and I approve! Pop gave her Grammy's flute, and she is teaching herself a bit. It makes my heart happy! Thank you for your videos.
Mancke head joint flute is my personal choice... Excellent video, thanks!
I think I liked the Powell wooden flue the best. It seemed like it was slimmer, probably having slightly thinner walls than the Sankyo flute which was heavier and thicker in its overall tone quality. The Muramatsu flute was exquisite - very flowing and fluid, by the way. Do you know what "Muramatsu" means in Japanese? It means, "Village Pine".When you put the wooden head joint on the Muramatsu flute, its sound changed a bit, but only a bit - it still retained its core tone quality.
I like the Powell best.... but then again - I’m a trad folkie and I play a Dixon 3 piece flute and one of the best Glenluce rosewood flutes (Pratten styled). The Sankyo just seemed to be sightly harsher to me.... but I’m not sitting at the pc with a big set of speakers plugged in!
Interestingly enough, besides how obviously leaky the most recent pink flute is, I feel like I can notice more difference between the wooden flutes and your silver flute than between the pink flutes and the gold. The wooden flutes, including the head joint, all seem warmer and more rich than the all silver. When it's all said and done, even in the case of the pink flutes, obviously a pro can make anything sound good.
If I were going to choose a wooden flute I would choose the Powell. However I really liked the sliver flute with the Mancke Headjoint. I am actually interested in purchasing a Mancke headjoint for my silver Brannen so I enjoyed this video ☺️
Nice, feels .looks and vocals. Sizes. And fits...
Fell in love with the Powell 16013
When first listening I couldn’t tell a difference but I realized that the higher notes on the metal sound brighter and the lower notes on the wood sound strong and full
Simply, wonderful!
I think the first wooden flute sounded better than the Powell....but of course you have to be comfortable playing it also so if you say Powell...i say go for it! The sound you have on the silver flute is amazing. I could hear a difference with the wooden head joint (to me it was more airy) So for me...i prefer either the first wooden flute or the all silver one....but what do i know...you are the bomb~!!!
Wood on silver is very charming! The silver alone sounds more muscular, but with the wood headjoint there is a sweetness. I thought both sounded better than wood alone.
i liked the sound of the silver flute with the wooden head. I gather that the head itself is like 2800 bucks and I had no idea what the price was for the silver body. The most expensive flute I have is a jupiter that I got from a yard sale for 100 bucks and have no idea if a fancier flute would make that much difference for the way I play. I think I did try a 1200 dollar flute at a store for a few minutes but really didn't find it to be all that much better than the jupiter. I also have an older olds and an armstrong 104 but I rarely play those. I would generally agree that most of the difference would be in how they PLAY and the sound has more to do with the skill of the player. For Katie's case, I'm sure she could get good sound out of a beer bottle.
I love the silver flute, but the wooden ones, especially the Powell, sounded otherworldly, which I really, really loved. And the wooden head joint on the silver flute was beautiful!
The head joint makes the biggest difference. Tbh, the silver and grenadilla have the most discernible difference in the lower registers but pretty much too similar to start rambling on minute details. Probably much different perspective in person bc audio doesn’t really do justice gotta be real. Silver and rose gold do a lot to make the the sound brighter. But wholeheartedly, if you got money, and you have a liking to playing instruments that fit the time period of when the music was made and what instrument was used commonly, then by all means. I do that with my clarinet ligatures, also just playing with string versus metal is pretty big because of probably mostly tension.
I have to say that the wooden flute sounds warmer.
A few things... 1. I love you and I look up to you so much! 2. What are your main tips for getting into Juliard and how to prepare? 3. Collab with twoset?

Is it me or the DS had a slightly higher pitch than the 3 others ? I felt the 3 flutes had a very nice sound. The DS seemed brighter and more precise. Sankyo maybe with richer dynamics and colours. However, this could definitely be more a question of the flautist-flute match and better explained by the fit of your technique with the instruments rather than the intrinsic characteristics of the flutes. The DS with the Mancke headjoint had a completely different sound. Very nice addition for chamber music/17-18th century music Many thanks for your videos and hope you’ll find your good ol’ flute shape back in 2021. Wish you the best for the new year
I loved Sankyo much more because: I think it has more resonance, better articulation and you can phrase longer. Even though I could notice you were a bit uncomfortable playing it, it really cached my attention. It has some cualities that stand out from the others. I was very impressed.

I just played joyful rose at a concert!!!
Sankyo is close to the sound of a baroque flute.. probably becauseof the absence of lip plate and its wooden body.. tone is so soft and illuminating.
Eu estou estudando esse Exelente instrumento
Just recently discovered your channel. Quite fun and informative. To my aesthetic, you sound fantastic on the miramatsu with manke head joint. I liked the Powell as well but not as much. All silver miramatsu was nice but lacked the charm and resonance of my first two.
My personal preference is also the wooden Powell and the Muramatsu DS flute + Mancke headjoint.

Great! Could you do any video in order to set up any differences between flutes with soldered and drawn toneholes? DS vs SR Muramatsu, for example... O.O Hugs froms Spain
all very nice, even better on traverso
Omg!!! Can you please try the Yamaha wooden flute? I have a Yamaha 677HCT. Amazing instrument :).
I prefer the Powell over all.
I love the sankyo flute
The wood ones sound more in depth
I love the 1st flute the best. The tone color is slightly muted, but it flows very nicely and serenely and I love it.
I like the pink one. :D
i felt the sankyo, despite comfort issues, outdid everything. lush tone.
I'd totally get one if I had money.
I just love the warm earthiness of the wooden instruments. Have you ever played any end-blown flutes such as Bulgarian kaval or Turkish ney?
For me it's very strange, but wooden flutes sounds more natural. Maybe Powell flute little bit better then Sankyo, but for sure it is very bad idea to mix mancke headjoint with muramatsu. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful for me.
The muramatsu with the wooden headjoint sounds soooo good
I choose the wood Powell.. it's very focused, has greatest resonance, and has most colour produced.

I liked the Powell the best
The wooden one has more weight and has a solid tone as oppose to the metal one having a less weight rather than thin piercing tone......I prefer the wooden one
I really liked the Powell as well. Sweet and well rounded tone.
I was most impressed by the Sankyo wooden flute. What an amazing sound, and your technique is flawless!
what excerpts did you play?
I like the Powell 16013 particularly for baroque and classical pieces, but what if you tried a full gold(-plated) one by Muramatsu and played an excerpt from, say, Saint-Saëns...(can’t think of a piece right now)..?
Wooden head joint for me.
I liked the Sankyo over the Powell, because of the resonance and it seemed like you could do more dynamics with it. The Mancke head joint on the Muramatsu sounded awesome.

I liked the Sankyo a little more than the Powell as well because I felt it played more in-tune and didn’t sound as bright
We are waiting... You know what we are waiting for
As a former woodwind instructor, listening to you is a pure joy!! I did favor the Powell...LOVED the richness!!😁
I really like the Powell-such a nice tone 😊 But I really liked the idea of the wooden head joint too!
I could definitely hear a difference in them as well! The first always sounded a little darker, deeper The second always a slight bit shallower and much brighter and louder The third always more resonant, bright and had a very clear tone The fourth always had a shallower sound than the third and slightly more airy and mellow, but otherwise similar. (there's me feeling too lazy to go back for the names lol)
The Powell is definitely my favorite! I think the sound is so sweet :) I'm also a little biased because I've tried a couple of the Powell wooden flutes and have loved them!
I recently bought a wooden for a nice price $3000 from Murali flutes. Highly recommend because the maker made Powell and Haynes flutes before making his own brand.

in my opinion the sankyo sounds most like a wooden flute, but i like the powell flute more because i think it has the perfect combination of sounds. also, the wooden headjoint with the muramatsu gives the flute a nice wooden feel and sound as well
aah i love the powell flute! also thank you for playing one of my favorite songs. we played jesu for one of our band concerts!!
Nice
I been waiting for a new video
I personally liked the Sankyo for the Bach Excerpt. As far as the other excerpts, I could tell you were much more comfortable on your usual set up so it was hard for me to tell what I liked sound wise. However, after thinking about it, I really liked the muramatsu with the wooden head joint the best. It gave the sound dimension that you just don’t get with a full metal set up making it much more interesting to listen to.
What song is your intro? It’s beautiful!
I love the warm sound of the wooden flutes. Yes the overtones are unmistakable and they sound "old fashioned" and very good in music other than classical music. But I can see why you love silver flutes. The sound is pure and crystalized. It's like pure water on a stream. It is also luminous....
I can definitely hear a difference in sound with the wooden flutes. They sounded more crisp and bold, but just a beautiful. My preference would a tie between the Sankyo wooden flute or the silver flute with the wooden headjoint, but I can understand the situation with the lip plate on the Sankyo one.
Oh, I LOVE the Murumatsu with the Mancke wooden headjoint
@Jenifer.flute20

It still has a bright modern flute sound, but with a mellow warmth.
That's what I thought too - Powell and the Mancke
You spent a very long time, or portion of this video, road testing these various wooden flutes of many different pieces of music, but it seemed ot me that you didn't breathe a word about what I consider to be the most important point - the kind of wood or material that it is made from! For example, I assumed that the Mancke Headjoint that you used on the Muramatsu flute was named after the kind of wood it was made from. I tried to look up Mancke in the Wood Database, which is my usual go-to reference for woods, and couldn't find it. Only subsequent googling revealed that Mancke wasn't a wood species, but rather named after Tobias Mancke, a designer of flute headjoints. And so, being a flute maker who knows quite abit about acoustical woods used for making flutes, it now seems incumbent upon me to fill your video watchers in on acoustical woods: By far, the vast majority of wooden flutes nowadays are made from Grenadilla wood, or Dalbergia melanoxylon, a true Rosewood species of the Dalbergia genus, but black - it's AKA African Blackwood. The melano- part of its species name denotes that it is black. Theobald Boehm, who you mention only briefly in this video, was the inventor of the modern Boehm flute, and he had three favorite wood species that he used: the aforementioned Grenadilla wood; Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa) also a true Dalbergia species of Rosewood, but reddish in color, native to Central America; and Crocus Wood, aka Jamaican Ebony, which is black like Ebony / Grenadilla - it's now an endangered species, I heard. I once listened to a video of a flute made from Crocus Wood, and I liked its tone even better than Grenadilla. Other alternative acoustical hardwoods that could be used to make flutes or flute headjoints iinclude Mopane, a wood from South Africa (the Mancke headjoint you used in this video looked like it could have been made from Mopane); Osage Orange; Mountain Mahogany; Ebony, Texas Ebony, Olive wood, Pink Ivory, Ironwood, and of course Boxwood, which was the general wood of choice for making Baroque flutes - I believe that Boehm's first boyhood flute, which is pictured in his book, Die Flote und Das Flotenspiel, or The Flute and Flute Playing, was made from Boxwood, which is light or cream colored.
Very interesting video!
The Powell flute is my favourite. I wanted a wooden flute for a long time, but I'm honestly a bit shocked about the prices. I hope, I'll find a more affordable wooden flute for myself.

I've been experimenting with a Roger Young African blackwood headjoint on my silver Azumi, and the difference in sound, the feeling of the air moving, the sensation of playing is so interesting. I love the way my silver headjoint sounds too, but playing baroque and classical styles on wood is so fun.
I absolutely love the nice soft warm sound of a wooden flute, but I also love the bright clear sound of a metal flute. The combination of metal flute with wood head joint doesn't have the best of both worlds for me, but it does have a beautiful unique sound of itself. My absolute favorite are the silver flutes though.
