Trying to resurrect 1942 GMC 4x4 COE. WW2 era Truck.
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this episode of Iron City garage, Joe gets to work on the 1942 GMC 4 x 4 cab over. This truck was purchased out of California six months ago. Originally it was an old World War II army truck but more recently has been used as a farm truck. It’s final resting spot before arriving at Iron City. Garage was on the side of the road painted up as a Tonka truck. make sure you stay put for the whole video to see if Joe can get this 1942 GMC 4 x 4 COE running and driving.

Yep, hard to find anyone with experience like Joe
If I worked with Joe for a week, I'd know way more than I've learned about vehicles in general, for the last 40 years... You need a raise, Joe!
Remember during WW2 those trucks were often driven by women. Even the former Queen Elizabeth 2 drove trucks like this during her wartime service. Great to see it running again.

Yep. During those years, everybody pitched in. For example, Bonnie the Bren Gun Girl (Then the yanks had to make their own because of course. Rosie the Riveter) who is based off a real woman, made Bren Guns in Toronto for the boys who went overseas to show the Germans why Canada was terrifying in WW1. There's no doubt in my mind that the trucks that hauled those guns (when not being hauled on trains) were driven by women too.
Love seeing the old iron coming back to life.

I really enjoy Joe. He reminds me of the garage owners that I knew in the '60s & '70s..👀
"CaN I GEt a PiCTuRe Of you STandInG beside it!?!?" had me in stitches!
At one point in my life I had a CCKW 6x6. 42 I think. I appreciate the questions being asked and someone who knows their stuff answering. God I miss working on the early military stuff. They would climb trees .
She’s a beauty I have a soft spot for COE’s. So much potential
I'm loving this stuff! Keep up the great work! I could watch you guys work all day.
Many thanks for saving this truck.
We owned one of those, it was a post war GMC, a flat bed that we made into a dump truck, I loved the tilt out windshields, you could tune them just right with the side windows down and it would be flat calm air in the cab.
Morning Pete, the 42 Jimmy is very cool!!
That Bed Look's Like It Came Off Of An Old Duece And A Half Because Of The Bench Seat Support's. I Drove Alot Of 2 1/2, And 5 Ton Truck's In The Army.
Love seeing old iron being saved whether trks heavy equipment motorcycle or tractor's good deal guys ty

Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice truck. It does get down below freezing in Salinas, not often but it does. I used to drive a two wheel drive version of that truck, taller and heavier duty dump truck with two speed rear end. It had a chrome grill and clean red and black paint job. An old lady waved and said,"nice truck"...it got a lot of looks. That was in the 80's. All those cabs were made in '37 but went on trucks even after WWII.
My all time favorite truck, thanks for sharing. Very interesting...
You have the best truck's on KZread. Buy far. Keep up the great work....

Sweet truck good save.thanks🎉🎉🎉🎉
I hope the new owner restores it back to its Army days. You don't really see COE's at shows.

I agree, that’s why I loaded one to take to Carlisle!
Fantastically clean under the valve cover!
the bed that you removed ,looks like a 1943 Ford Burma Truck bed.
I LIKE THE SHOW BETTER WHEN PETE HELPS OUT ON TEAR DOWNS…PETE, PETE, PETE..🎉🎉🎉😊😊
They don’t make vehicles like they used to. Let’s be real, 90% of the vehicles manufactured in the past 20 years won’t be around in the next 20. Whereas these hardy old gals will outlive all of us.
What a keeper! Looking forward to a full resto. Feelin' the fizz just thinkin' 'bout it.
" hey Otis what's that can looking thang on the side a that motor " " uh , I dunno "🥺
Joe’s the best
Imagine cramming a 471 detroit into this
Awesome truck!!
Save that drivers seat. Looks like a 1968 firebird or GTO bucket seat…worth a few bucks to someone needing an original core.
Hey Pete and Joe, could the engine be a 270ci ? Just curios! I own a 1950 GMC, 5 WINDOW 1/2 ton shorty, w/248 ci M 4spd. Optional 270 ci. Just a thought fellas. GREAT VIDEO GUYS!
FYI Iron City folks, this truck license was last registered in CA. in 1976.
Cool truck
Great video . I really like your channel.
Love the scout 80
Cool Chanel... Just came across you guys tonight!!!

Ok , glad it's going to Connecticut instead of over seas.

Hallo everybody, very nice Videos ! I have a question , wich Band plays this awesome backing Sound ? Greetings from South Germany Bernd
Yeah, they all run when parked. 😂😂😂
TRY TO FIND A LEAD HAMMER TO TAP VALVES SO YOU GET THE POWER TO MOVE THE VALVE BUT NO SHOCK TO BREAK THE VALVE STEM / LIKE MACHINIST USE TO TAP PARTS DOWN IN THE VICE TO SET FLAT ON THE PARALLELS AND CAUSE NO DAMAGE TO THE PARTS
I'll tell you what the bed on that is..... That's the bed from a Ford GTB, often called a Burma Ford. Both your truck and the GTBs are fairly rare trucks, so take care of 'em.
Great video, too bad the audio is sometimes wrong : it's only on one side and unpleasant with headphones.
Be careful of the asbestos dust from old exhaust gaskets men….!
Everything was running when it was parked. I had a tarantula for a pet for 12 years.
I would of got the thing running out in the yard and drove it into the shop the thing should have a inline 6 and those things are so simple to get running as long as they turn over and not seized and it has some compression and the carb is half ass functional
What happened to putting the catter guard back on the front of that cab over????
That's a newer than the truck dump bed trailer box on back
THAT WAS WHEN TRUCK DRIVERS WERE MEN WITH STEEL BALLS AND GOT THE JOB DONE WITH NO B/S LIKE MY OLD MAN (R.I.P. POP ) TRUCK DRIVER FOR SPERRY RAIL 17 +YEARS
What size of inline 6 in that thing is it the 270 cu in or something smaller?
On old machines like that is after draining the oil fir new then pulling the plugs and flooding cylinders with mystery oil ( kerosene/ATF to soak a few days before any attempt to move pistons) and then I pull the starter and clean up the bendix thouroughly and gease. Spin test and inspect the brushes. Then you grab the hahmonic ballancer with both hands and gently turn back and forth a little to break loose the rings. If it moves slowly work it back and forth untill you go 180 on each side. Now gently rotate a full rotation. Then back. Now oil the cylinders and turn.it till it is turning full rotation. NOW --- with the plugs out ( you'll want to spread shop towls over the open plug holes and it is time to spin it with the starter motor to get everything cleaned and slicked up. Next clean and free the valves by turning and a lite square tap with a ball pean hammer on the top of the valve stem to settle and seat the keepers etc. Then after checkingbthe carb n setting up a n alternate fuel source. Plugs back in and pray for spard to start it. If you goninto it like you will likely wake one up. Im 80 and been reviving of forgotten machinesInwas bout 10 yrs old. ( Old diesels are almost allways waiting to be rescued) I love the old COEs. Especially the Dodges withthe hemi engine.😂😂 Dandahermit.
What about the white Autocar? panel van in the background?
Silas from the youtube-channel "adventures made from scratch" has these old GM straight-six engines around on the regular, out of old grain trucks. Dont know about shipping prices, hes sitting in kansas, but hes very reasonable on pricing.

Is the model # GMC AFKX-352?
85 horsepower? Impossible. I'm reliably informed by the Big 3 that I need 450 horsepower to haul my lard ass to the bowling alley.
There are places in California that gets cold
What is the issue with the WWII era bed? It does not fit the truck. I think the answer is that the bed is from a FORD 1 1/2 ton GTB "Burma jeep." I say that as the bed has the bumps over the rear tires that a Chevrolet G506 does not have. The USAAC did not like the Burma jeeps because the tire bumps got in the way of a crated aircraft engine. Chevy 1 1/2 tons did not have the bumps. The mismatch paint should be a red flag. Getting a correct bed will be difficult.

Was it the same bed used there and in the ton an a half Chevy ?
@ShercoBill
2 ай бұрын
@@heartland96a No, that cargo body was only used only on the Ford GTB. I believe that the rear wheel arches, built as part of the bed, were then discontinued for all cargo beds. It was faster, easier and cheaper to build a true "flatbed" cargo body for all WW2 trucks.

The truck is back in California now, surprisingly it did not go overseas
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
So your selling it to go overseas? That really sucks that it's not staying here

Before they took the lead out tail pipes rusted out and the rings wore out at about 100,000 miles. Lead in our system caused violent behavior and lower IQ. Good riddance my car has 188,000 miles and doesn't use oil it still has the original tail pipe. Leaded gas started in about 1935. why didn't the valves burn out before there was leaded gas.
