The casual disregard for bus service in small towns is both infuriating and emblematic of the public perception of transit as for people with no other choice, who should be grateful it exists at all, etc.

Would automated buses solve this?

It’s mainly because it’s a bus. The bus doesn’t offer any advantages over a car other than cost because it gets stuck in the same traffic and is only really used where the ridership is too low to justify rail. As a result, the bus is only ever used by people who are too broke to afford anything else or in areas where everybody has a car anyway. So nobody who votes ever rides it because it’s full of weird scary people and isn’t good as transit and it gets neglected. Case and point: I live in the DC area. I commute to work on the Metro, and I don’t own a car. I’ve been carless since 2019. I walk to the metro station and I love riding transit. But despite living near several different bus stops and a BRT line, in the 3 1/2 years I’ve been carless, I have never once set foot on a Metrobus, and I don’t ever intend to.

@@michaelimbesi2314 that's only because it's a weak bus network. in Seattle the bus network offers you an efficient way to get from lower density neighborhoods to the light rail system. the light rail won't have to make too many stops either because each station has it's own sub-network of buses.

whether a bus service, going at the wrong time, on the wrong street, still exists?... that is very much a moot point for me....
It sounds like that rafting company makes a killing by undercutting the cab company 🙃!
On smaller transit services, buses can deviate from the fixed route called "flexible service." This is done to drop people off at their front doors, or to doctors offices, etc. In smaller towns, always call ahead about a stop if you are not familiar with their service!

Fair enough, the New River Transit Authority does have a deviation policy...but it also seems odd that someone calling in a deviation would take the bus on a completely different road than scheduled! And the impression we got from things like asking the bank teller was that the bus is pretty unreliable about serving even its scheduled stops.
Bald And Bankrupt would be proud. Welcome to the Provinces of West Virginia! Some true Appalachian adventurizing you boys are experiencing! Love it!

Shoutout ACE. They do really good white water rafting trips
Miles: “maybe we should go in the waterpark” Me, a coaster enthusiast: “I mean it’s not a roller coaster, but I guess it’s as close as we’ll get on this channel” Also I’ve been to 6 different water parks (not as much of a water park guy as a theme park guy but still), a few multiple times, and have never seen any waterpark ask you to sign a waiver. That’s sketchy AF lmao

Oh yeah, it was a pretty sketch place...but also a fun time! I will say, something I really want to do someday is ride every funicular in the country, which would require going to a couple of amusement parks! So if that ever happens, stay tuned...
@14:40 "the regiona jet" instead of prop plane is actually increasingly common in the U.S and most of them are jets now as most airlines have reitired smaller turboprop aircraft such as the B1900D the dash 8 and metroliner only a few are turboprop now and most are jets. however that aircraft was actually pretty new and you were lucky to get to fly an E145 for just 35 bucks!
@unconventionalideas5683

The regional jets are increasingly being phased out wherever possible because they cost more than the propeller plane because of high fuel consumption.

Why didn't you take Amtrak home from Thurmond?
So apparently according to Google maps it actually takes 27 min to drove from Thurmond to Ace waterpark since there's no direct roads, and you instead need to go a wierd roundabout way
You guys are funny.
ACE is a really fun place havent been there in couple of years but its worth the drive from jersey to get there

Yeah, Montgomery, WV is lower! Not really sure why - there's a lot more population around there - but Thurmond's ridership will probably increase now that the New River Gorge is a national park.
