    I think void is probably the best of the bunch. Being independent means it's not a "tear out systemd and hope it works" distro.( Though those distros can also work well, especially for people that are used to the parent distro.) And once you install vpm, the package manager syntax becomes similar to the likes of apt and dnf.

    Been using Void for many years now, I'll never go back to another distro on the Desktop. Technically I could use it as a server too, but Debian 12 + Docker/Kubernetes is such a great match for that so I won't change it.

    Void is so good, been using it as my primary OS for about 8 years or so now. I used Debian as my development box for several years but after it started having issues that me attempting to fix making it worse so I went ahead and switched it to void too. Love every bit of it.

    Void is great. I've been using it for almost 6 months now. At the moment i'm going down the rabbithole by trying to write some templates for xbps-src (similar to arch pkgbuikd). The documentation is a bit overwhelming lol.

    Got Chimera Linux installed on aarch64 / ppc64 / ppc64le / riscv64 inside QEMU machines just two weeks ago for the purpose of having a few more headless build targets. My experience with the installation process was a blast: worked on first try despite the specificities of partioning for PowerPC machines, online documentation was clear and straightforward. If no distro so far made you perform a CLI-only install of an OS, then Chimera Linux can be a relevant introduction to the subject. Installation difficulty is lower than that of Arch or Gentoo, but higher than Alpine. Just follow the documentation and you'll be fine.

    Devuan does have a minimal installer iso. It looks similar to Debian’s installer and differs from the live iso.

    also instead of rebooting you can mount : The command mount -a [-t type] [-O optlist] (usually given in a bootscript) causes all filesystems mentioned in fstab (of the proper type and/or having or not having the proper options) to be mounted as indicated, except for those whose line contains the noauto keyword. Adding the -F option will make mount fork, so that the filesystems are mounted in parallel.

    You downloaded Devuan's equavalent to Debian's live-standard (no GUI) live CD ISO. What you needed was the Devuan netinstall, server CD or desktop DVD. Any of those three discs would have given you the debian-installer and you could go from there just like any official Debian media. Edit: According to the website, you can actually run the refractainstaller from that minimal/CLI live CD to install to disk. That I didn't actually know. The Refracta installer... works, but I'll take the debian-installer any day.

    Even with a minimalistic distro, they should make the basic installer. Having to do all that, just to have a base system is a bit ridiculous.

    System-D-less distributions could be a viable option if it's not so cumbersome in the set up process....

  • @FatherlyFox

    @FatherlyFox

    8 ай бұрын

    SystemD-free distros are viable (Alpine, Gentoo, etc...) but there are so many programs that rely on SystemD as their core that, a) workaround patches need to be applied to allow for a non-SystemD distro to use said programs and b) they're, imho, more likely to cause technical debt for the end user if they have to manually create their own bootscripts that are system-wide vs the choice of a SystemD-unit that can be enabled at either the user or system level. The one thing I really hate about SystemD though is the lack of coherent documentation for intermediate/advanced users. For example, we have SystemD-NetworkD but it has no graphical counterpart like NetworkManager/Wicked/connman/etc... so there isn't a good reliable way to manage it without opening a text editor and creating various files for NetDev, Link, and Network. Personally, I'm a enjoyer of SystemD more than OpenRC/Sysinit/runit/etc because of the simplicity of service configuration but other than that, it is lackluster tbh.

    Do you mean as in a linux mint type of experience with a gui installer and such? Cause while it's not really anything fancy, the ncurses installer for void is pretty easy to use. I say that coming from vanilla arch though.
