Who doesn’t love getting art supplies in the mail? (Well maybe people who aren’t artists.) It is one of life’s great pleasures. 😅 And why do most of us buy those pretty sets of watercolors or other paints that we don’t necessarily need? Because the beautiful colors are like candy…really, they’re addicting and just irresistible.

Not true! I am not an artist… but you wouldn’t guess that from the amount of art supplies I buy 😂😂😂 so I definitely love getting art supplies in the mail… and tbh…. I think that’s my actual hobby! 😂😂😂

Although I have painted for years, watching simple demos of color mixing offers me the realization that I need to practice color mixing. This was lovely to watch!

I can’t imagine not watering down gouache, it would make it difficult when it is so much fun. I started out with Davinci gouache. They have 37 mil. Tubes that are affordable. Thanks for showing us this brand opening.

Yea, that rumor bothers me because watering down the gouache opens up so much opportunity. But some people hear one person say that's "bad" and they never try it.

I have the Holbein mixing set on my Christmas list for a portable limited pallet. I have the 18 color set in a pallet which is amazing to work with except the for ivory black. Sadly I missed the sale on Jackson’s for the shinhan gouache. Thanks for sharing.

I have Carmine in watercolour, makes lovely purples and oranges when mixed. A great "go to" red.

I've just ordered the ShinHan 12 set from Jackson's based on your reviews. I thought it Wass a great place to start!! After watching this video and I super excited and now I want the moss green too LOL

I hear both "don't water down gouache" and "don't use gouache straight from the tube" - but it all depends on what you're going for. I do think it's easier to work with going from thin to thick in your layers, but I've noticed the higher quality gouache (namely Winsor & Newton and Holbein) take a bit of working to rewet those layers underneath even when they're thick, so that "rule" can easily be broken too depending on technique.

the straight from the tube comment often I think relates to color mixtures, in that it's rare for realistic paintings to use paint color without modifying it with a mix... the main complaint i hear about watering gouache down is that you can dilute past the ability of the binder to keep the pigment on the surface, but if you're painting on paper, the pigment soaks into the paper and isn't as much of an issue as it would be say with oil paints on a hard board. i also think personal preference enters the equation as well. But i like using both washes and opaque passages in my gouache paintings and i find it's a very versatile medium to use.

@@DannySabraArt Yes - the straight from the tube thing is usually regarding how strong the color is. For a landscape artist it may prove more challenging to use colors without first mixing. But some artists have the intention of strong bold color or unnatural use of color to fulfill their vision, and in that case they might need color straight from the tube :)

Hi Sarah, thanks for the video 😊💕 I really love your way of swatching, it helps revealing the paint's properties. I definitely have to do it this way as well. Just a quick note on the cadmium yellow - that color is a hue if the pigment is py53 (nickel/rutille yellow). I have this color in the Schminke watercolor range and is such a lovely yellow. Thank you so much for this video!!! There seems to be a shortage of quality gouache review videos for high end brands (I’ve seen a LOT for Himi, a few for Holbein and a couple for Winsor Newton) and most of them don’t water down the gouache at all (maybe because they don’t water it down when they use it either for their style 🤷🏻‍♀️) in the swatches so it’s really hard to tell what the value range and consistency is for each color 😑 And I adore the test painting you did! 😻. Inspiring to see what can be done with just 4 colors + white! The color mixing play really helped this newb learn more about what colors to mix in order to get the results I want - the whole color wheel and primary/secondary/tertiary thing totally escapes me LOL 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

Very cool! I pretty much have only used winsor and newton's gouache and i really like it, but i've thought about other brands since the WN line doesn't have every color. I just started using schminke watercolors and i love those so much I can't imagine going back! so I'm excited to see how their gouache stacks up. I know their watercolor is honey based, is their gouache also? I like how the shinhan looks! nice and pigmented it seems

Such a beautiful demonstration of those beautiful colors. How lovely! However, my etcher sketchbook is so expensive that I save it for specials things. I wish they would lower their price because $40 is a lot of money to pay here in the United States for a sketchbook.

For a moment there I thought you weren't going to test the orange mixes 😉 I've never really tried guache, so it's nice to see someone who knows what they're doing swatch and demonstrate. I might get a basic set to see if I can be rubbish in another medium 😆

As you can see you don't need a ton of tubes to make a wide variety of colors! So if it's something you want to try these would be great

I can't wait until every friday and that email for the next weeks sale...yeah I'm hooked but have resisted for a month now, cold turkey aint fun!

Nice love the Korean brands and the likes they tend to be ultra pigmented which means my cheap self doesn't go over board and use a whole tube, I'm so used to using them when I use my M.Graham it trows me off because of the difference in texture.

That was fun! I'm really impressed with this brand, both the traditional gouache and the Shinhan Pass watercolour/gouache hybrid. Loved the colours you used in the artwork. :)

I always waterdown gouache helps me setting values. I dont think there is a right or wrong for art if it works for what you do. Try both see what fits your need for a painting. Fuzzing to much is more deadly then over watering any paint.

New gouache video ♡ I heard Eve Bolt and Mina talking about the Shinhan gouache, I think. They look quite comparable to Winsor & Newton to me. But I wish Shinhan is more available in Europe. It's hard to find them where I live.

I was surprised to see they are so cheap here. £3.20 per tube, whereas W&N is £4.40 and Schmincke is £7.60!

@@SarahBurnsStudio Schmincke will be always more on the expensive side... I recently tried the Arrtx jelly gouache. Just for one stupid reason.. I don't wanted to use up my nice tubes of Winsor & Newton Gouache that quickly. But they are fun. I had fun painting with that set. My mom's friend gave me one of these calendars were you can glue in fotos. Now I want to make something personal and do a small painting for every month and I thought gouache would be fitting for this small project.

Thank you, so interesting! I have never tried the ShiHan gouache, just W&N, Schmincke and Graham- I like them all. There is also a french brand, Linel I would like to try as I have heard good opinions about it from artists, have you tried it? It will be interesting to hear what you think of the Schmincke gouache as I have heard very different opinions from gouache artists.

the carmine (PR17) may be a issue with light fastness as it is ratted III = Fair. one i would only us in a book that is kept closed, enjoy your gouache and thanks for the video

Yup, it is not the highest rated red. But I already own extremely lightfast gouache so I didn't care about that for this. It's just a "play" set that I'll use for fun :)

ShinHan do a hybrid paint called ShinHan Pass which is a gouache & watercolour hybrid. Mass tone acts just like gouache, watered down it acts just like watercolour. It’s interesting stuff.

I know this is an old video, but your comment about the rumor that you shouldn’t water down gouache struck me, so I wanted to chime in. I have a long history with art but have only, in the last 2 years or so, started following artists on Instagram, watching art videos, etc.. (By the way I love your channel and how knowledgeable and thorough you are, but also how open you are about areas of uncertainty. Random, but you also seem to make a point to properly comply with affiliate disclosure requirements, when many people play fast and loose with the requirements.) I have noticed a phenomenon which I suppose happens with all other subject areas too, but art just happens to be the one with which I am involved. In short, an inaccurate claim, or a claim which is sort of true but requires a lot of qualification will be made, and often it is something which sounds good… something which “makes sense” on the surface. That claim gets picked up by other people, and it spreads rapidly and quite quickly becomes an established “fact.” And it can be wrong all along. There are a lot of completely self-taught artists on the internet, and many of them are really great and knowledgeable, but some pass on a lot of misinformation and it’s a vicious cycle in which others learn from them and develop a very shaky foundation. Some people with huge followings make outright wrong and potentially detrimental claims. Other times it’s just weird things, like repeatedly mispronouncing very common color names. Stranger still, one popular (American) “influencer” artist who has published multiple books about painting had clearly never heard of quinacridone pigments and couldn’t pronounce the word… and suggested that it was because it must be an Italian word because her paints were made in Italy. In any case, gouache seems to have quickly gone from a relatively obscure art medium to an extremely popular medium, and it seems like there is a lot of misunderstanding about how it is or can be used. Your comments struck me because just in the last week I have tried to find videos demonstrating Holbein Acryla gouache, and I specifically wanted to see how it performs with water. It was surprisingly difficult to find videos showing it or other acrylic gouache used with water at all, let alone thinned down significantly, and there were people saying that since it’s acrylic, you can’t use water or it will “break down the binder.” There is a tiny bit of truth to that statement, but it is greatly overstated, but has taken off like wildfire. (In response to the general claim which gained traction around 8-10 years ago, a Golden rep has said you could add as much as 99 parts water to 1 part paint and still have a strong paint film.) Most acrylic gouaches (Liquitex excepted) are formulated to handle like traditional gouaches, aside from drying fixed. And if you think about it, would a “weak film” really be a problem on paper? Traditional watercolor and gouache with a gum arabic binder is very weakly bound and can instantly be disrupted by a drop of water. (In any case, I found that Holbein acrylic gouache works amazingly well with water… almost shockingly so, but still dries completely fixed.

Fascinating insights!! I totally agree with what you said about misinformation spreading. That’s why I never take anyone’s word as scripture, even “well established artists.” I do my own tests. A lot of them. And most importantly, give it time. If I discover my own thoughts to be proven wrong in 5 years, I’ll damn well share admit it! But I never claim to be an expert, because I’ve not been alive or painting long enough to be an expert. Actually in my most-watched video (100k+ views) I start by saying I prefer to do my own tests rather than listen to other people’s facts about painting. I cringe when I think about that video being my most popular though…I’m not a controversial person at heart and I’m like whyyyy is that one most viewed 🤣 Regarding using water with gouache (i cant speak to acryla gouache because I dont have experience) it is easy to assume water would weaken the binder, but I’ve used it for years now without any issues. Will they last 100 years? Who knows. It doesn’t matter to me because I don’t sell them, they are almost all in my sketchbooks. Gouache in general is typically scanned for prints and not sold as originals. Because it’s impermanent, you have to varnish or use cold wax to seal it which not many artists want to do before selling. As for acrylic, there’s another one that I use very watered down, especially the first layers. So far so good :)

I feel like that rumor started because people have a really hard time with the gouache to water ratio. So instead, they just use it straight from the tube.

I had no knowledge of their products until I saw them on Jacksons. After some research I saw that they seem to be high quality, so I was like hmm worth a try!

I just bought a couple of tubes of Shinhan gouch they are shithot.

"Have you seen anything so seen in your life?!" Answer: nope!!

I don’t understand. The hole point to use gouache is to water it down. That versatility is the interest about gouache!!!

That’s what I do since kindergarten because my teacher shown this trick to me 😄 and it was validated and encouraged by teachers even in highschool. That’s why I‘m confused 🙃

@@Emiswitchcraft Ohhh you're responding to the rumor I mentioned? Yea, so that's why I mentioned it. Because it's false. You CAN dilute the gouache without problems. According to the manufacturers, it's fine, but "may reduce the lightfast rating" but according to my own tests it does not.

I donno if it's just me but......gouache all seems the same to me. Masters touch, Royal Langnickle essentials and Holbine all seem to do the same thing! Unlike watercolor.....gouache don't seem to get much better "if at all better" going from student grade to artist grade gouache!.....
