One hydroponics system im looking at is bottle farm, its a UK based company that makes kits that allow you to turn plastic bottles into hydroponic gardens, and they have something called the 'mini' which allows you to turn any container (e.g. a glass jar ) into a hydroponic garden :)

Thank you for the tip 😍
Hydroponic systems are so cool! I am planning to getting one or two growing spots in my apartment someday since I don’t have access to a yard. I’d love to see updates in future vlogs!
I have a hydroponic system just like yours. The system itself sends you a piece of poster board like material that has the plants name written on it, cut in the same shape you just made, but it fits over the top of the hole on the 'net' instead of inside it as you have here. That is what they use to keep the light out. Then when the plant gets girthy enough, you can peel the poster board back and let the plant block it's own light :)
It's awesome that Gittemary is getting involved with hydroponic gardening ( nothing better than home grown vegetables & herbs). I would encourage this ( I am biased towards gardening whether it is hydroponic or outdoors). Love 🥰 the video and love 💕Gittemary.
I'd never heard of hydroponics until watching your channel...seeing the basil on your recent video, I'm so in! 🌿😁
I have quite a few hydroponic units in my house, including one of the big Lettuce Grow towers. The best types of sponges to use are made of coco coir, which is milled coconut shell. It is supposed to be a sustainable material, it uses no plastic, and it holds the perfect amount of moisture around the roots. Something else to keep in mind with the type of system you bought is that it does not have a pump to oxygen into the water. Roots need oxygen and get it from water. So you will have to either change the water completely with fresh water or just top it off with a lot of water every week or so, so that the plants have freshly oxygenated water to grow without being stunted. Happy to give any other advice as well! I've been doing this for 3 years now and grow all of my needs for greens and its great!
Hi. I've been doing hydroponics since January. I started with a few Aerogarden units that I found online and then I've also been experimenting with thrifted storage totes. I've found that the aerogarden/off brand grow sponges made of peat moss are the best when it comes to growth mediums (for me.) Also, I recommend a pump so you can aerate your plants. I didn't do that for my homemade system and the plants ended up dying. Also, getting small, clear cups or glass ramekins for germination is highly recommended. You place them on top of the plants until they sprout. I've grown/harvested: romaine lettuce, butter lettuce, basil, edamame, mizuna, chijimisai, tatsoi, tiny bok choy, chinese broccoli, top hat tomatoes, yedikule lettuce, and green onions. Another thing I have learned was that space and knowing how big your plants will grow really matter. Research is super important beforehand! I didn't know that Tomatoes/solanium plants will grow and grow and grow. Cherry tomatoes are better suited for indoors. Hydroponic gardening is super, super fun and rewarding. Lots of trials and errors but it's totally worth it. Can't wait to see how your garden turns out.
mint and oregano are very resilient and great for beginners! They root easily and can take a lot of abuse (like hot weather, infrequent watering, frost). DO NOT plant them in the ground unless you want them to take over- they spread very quickly and can choke out other plants. I made this mistake by planting them in raised beds and often have to weed them out of other herbs. It makes mowing smell really good though.
Wow, so interesting, I've been thinking about hidroponics for some time and I loved this video (just as I love all videos you make). Thank you for being so inspiring and positive in the journey of living a more sustainable life 😘💕

Yes, Gemma it would be a great idea to get a hydroponic system. Even for those who do have a garden/allotment it's good for starting the seedlings.
Amazing! 🥳 Your incredible resourcefulness is always so creative and inspiring! 👏❤️ I wrote about freshwater scarcity for my environmental science undergraduate capstone research paper, and since we cannot survive without plant foods, my focus was on the impacts of conventional concentrated/industrial crop growing methods on AIO (+ many related factors like variation in regional climate & freshwater availability, geographic concentration/number of growing operations, substitutable drought-intolerant crops, etc.). And of my several solutions, I included transitioning over to hydroponic growing methods (for its obvious benefits, some of which you’ve mentioned!). Having a hydroponic garden has also been a goal of mine for several years. My partner and I moved this year, and our house has enough space for a hydroponic garden in the basement, so I got a couple books and am really excited to get started as soon as we get a couple time-sensitive projects out of the way! Looking forward to seeing how your setup evolves and what you’ll learn throughout the process!! 😍
Love the simple Kratky setup with foam to support the plant in a reusable way.
Im a plant ecologist, and in regards to your mystery herb, mint, oregano, and basil are all in the same family, Lamiaceae. It can be hard to distinguish a lot of the specific species. They can look and smell quite similar. That is perhaps why those flavors often pair well together. Edit: It is hard to tell since you didn't show a great shot of it, but imo it looks more like a mint. Not 100% sure, but based on the leaf shape and the way the leaves attach to the petiole, it looks a bit more mint-like to me As for light, purely due to day length alone in Denmark, even if it gets bright light during the day, it would likely still not be enough. A good way to tell is by looking at leaf size. If your leaves are growing abnormally large, especially if there are signs of it bending towards the light or reaching up to the artificial light, that can tell you that it may not be quite enough. And if you can get them to fit in your hydroponic plant baskets, Rockwool propagation cubes may be worth looking into. It makes seeding, changing plants, etc. A quite easy process
I've been looking into hydroponics myself for the same reason, I want fresh herbs all the time lol. There's a guy here on KZread that uses pool noodles to block sunlight and suspend the plant. Same idea but a little different. Good luck on your journey!
The alga info is useful, I didn’t knew why my trying to regrow herbs got bad

Any advice on choosing environmentally friendly nutrients for a hydroponic system?
Love your channel. I binged watched for 3 days straight ( I know, I know, I shouldn't stream so much) 😔 but your channel is amazing. I have been on a minimalist journey for a while now but I think I started getting serious about low waste ,couple of months ago when I decided to purchase a good quality water filter and realized how many water bottles I've been using prior to the purchase. I've been trying to avoid chemicals and artificial ingredients in my food and products for years but I could never find a good natural deodorant that works. I even tried making my own. I live in Florida and a deodorant is a necessity. Can you please recommend a brand that you love?
Didn’t know hydroponic systems required 90% less water. So cool. And I thought before you said it shes gonna have to cut a slit in that ring to fit it😄
looks interesting... where did you get the hydroponics container? (so I mean the thing the basil is actually hanging in ^^) secondhand...? maybe I missed this ^^
Hello! Your plant from Greece I probably also Basil (summer Basil)…..
How do you make the water nutritional?
What nutrients did you put in the water?

I use a specific hydroponic nutrient, ot can be found in plant shops, but compost liquid works too ☺️
LOve how you grow food even without a garden.

It is so much fun 💚
Reuse a piece of aluminum foil. Cut a circle a ⅛" to ¼' larger than the cage. cut a half slit from edge to middle. Lift cage, insert stem and wrap around cage edge. Total blackout shield=unfriendly algae environment. :)
The one from Greece is probably spearmint, in greek it's called δυόσμος (pronounced diosmos)

I have no idea how big the hole is but hear me out. The most zero waste thing ever - use left over wine cork instead of the foam. 😀 if the cork is big enough you would use it pretty much the same as the foam
Definitely looks to me more like oregano than mint
