If you're eating Filipino food, always ask on how to eat them. In Filipino, there's a bunch of food where you should eat in a certain way. Like food combinations, mixing, and sauces. Like halo-halo should be mix thoroughly before eating, some food must be paired with rice, some food must be sprinkled with calamansi, others are better with a certain dipping sauce, etc.

Try cutting food using the edge of the spoon while holding it down with the fork in the other hand. Most Filipino restaurants and diners can make do without the dinner knives because of that technique.

Dillon, the green "jelly" is called gulaman or gelatin in English. You have to mix first Halo-Halo before eating. The yellow cake is called Sans Rival. Even if it sounds foreign, it is a Filipino creation. The yellow ingredient in your halo-halo is not called caramel but leche flan (a custard with egg and caramelized sugar), similar to creme brulee.

Can’t wait for you to actually go to the Philippines and eat in proper Filipino restaurants! I think you’ll find our history interesting 🇵🇭 Btw, when eating you can use fork (on your left hand) to push the food on to the spoon (on your right hand) and also scoop the rice using spoon or if you like fork on the left hand and knife on the right but then reverse use the knife to cut and push the food to the fork. Sorry if Ijust confused you 😂 Just I observed not many foreigners know bec of the spoon usually used for soup but try this. The caramel thing in the halo-halo is leche flan. It is a dessert on it’s own. 🍧🍨🍮 Love all the food you had esp Sans Rival a favourite 😋

Hey Dillon, I don't know why the place was recommended to you, knowing you're looking for "Filipino" food. When they offered you something to drink and served you a tropical fruit smoothie, they already started you with a non-Filipino item, pretty sad. Then when you look at the breakfast menu, it's kind of hard to read but I did notice "Omelet" on the menu and can't read the rest... FIRST, the omelet is again, another NON-FILIPINO item. Filipino breakfast would be FRIED RICE, FRIED EGG OR SCRAMBLED EGG, HOTDOG, BEEF TAPA (CURED BEEF), TOCINO OR LONGANIZA, AND COFFEE. Of course, today, if you go to Manila and get breakfast from a nice hotel, they'll serve you those and the omelet, poached eggs, bacon, ham, etc. Well, they finally brought you and they look delicious. The only thing I would say that is not really Filipino is the Burger Steak... the Halo-Halo looks huge... Anyway, don't expect much to really experience Filipino food outside the Philippines... would be good enough but still, being in the Philippines would be best to really experience the true Filipino food.

You barely touch your foods. I hope this not gone to waste. If you want to try Filipino foods, take it slowly one at a time so you can enjoy, differentiate , and savor the taste. By the way the knife is optional in traditional Filipino family. Mainly our dishes are made with sauces, and soups, meats in bite size and rice. Remember in South East Asia, we use spoon for rice and soups, never forks. We rarely have these steak and fries compared to Europe or American. In restaurants high ends you easily find it. So totally differrent. I know, because I have a Belgian hubby. He was also surprised before. Now he is used of Philippine style especially kamayan, eating with bare hands. Now he knows what is is survival, a true Boyscout in Philippines. Ps: traditional drink IN PROVINCES WILL BE COCONUT WATER But I understand in your place its not available. Halo halo is the most favorite if not the best dessert in Philippines.
