It's incredibly likely that your pronunciation just has to do with you being Canadian and your American audience not understanding that dialects/accents vary. I follow an Australian beauty blogger and she gets the same amount of comments about her pronunciation when it's only her Australian accent affecting it. The American pronunciation of words isn't the end all be all so please don't ever believe that you need to adjust your speech for your audience

As someone who specializes in phonetics and phonology in Language Teaching, it's completely okay for you to be saying costume with that 'sh'/'j' sound (/ˈkɒstjuːm/), it's really common for people in the UK to pronounce it that way, even some Americans and obviously Canadians do it that way too. Don't let others make you overthink and dwell about your own speech.
