Ignoring the fact that most of The Articles of Confederation were made obsolete upon the addition of our current constitution, the term "free inhabitant" has never meant what she was blabbering on about. Nothing at all to do with not carrying identification, basically says anyone who LIVES in a state will be subject to the rights, laws and restrictions of that state. And also be allowed to travel to any other state, but be subject to the laws, etc of that state. As far as I know EVERY STATE IN THE UNION REQUIRES YOU TO POSSESS A VALID LICENSE WHILE OPERATING A VEHICLE AND REQUIRES YOU TO PRESENT THAT LICENSE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT WHEN ASKED.

Now, the long answer: This seems to be one of those crackpot arguments that seem to have just a bit of verifiable facts, so some people believe that it is a reasonable argument. There are at least two big problems with the arguments made in the video. The first is her interpretation that this article grants her the rights of a citizen, without requiring her to be held accountable for her actions. That part has been addressed multiple times. The second is whether the Articles of Confederation apply, which I will address below, but first… The Articles of Confederation were the precursor to the US Constitution. We often forget that the original 13 states were individual colonies that were governed separately with their own currency, import and export laws, etc. As such, an individual living in a given state was considered a citizen of that Colony/state, and up until the resolution of the revolution, they were still subjects of the British Empire. We also need to remember that the Articles of Confederation was written in 1777 and ratified by the 13 states in 1881. A citizen was a land owning man, I believe there was an age requirement as well, but that may have varied from state to state. Gender and race were factors of exclusion from citizenship and property ownership in at least some, if not all states, and both slavery and indentured servitude were still practiced. Neither slaves nor indentured servants would be considered free, since they were subject to their owner or sponsor. I am going to summarize the basic premise of the document below, but you can read it in its entirety here: Articles of Confederation The Articles of Confederation created a weak central government that allowed for the creation of military for the common defense of the 13 states, for funds to be collected from states to pay for the military (which was fighting the British Empire at the time), to mediate between states to settle disputes, authority to manage all trade and affairs with “Indian” nations, establishing a standard system of weights and measures, and creating an interstate postal service. It established a congress of representatives from each state, and things like term limits, when congress convened, and other such details. It also limited states from prohibiting travel and trade between various states, from maintaining an unnecessarily large navy, from proclaiming war, from entering into agreements with foreign nations and from establishing embassies in foreign nations, and from establishing an agreement with another state, at least not without the consent of congress. There is nothing about citizenship or rights, because each state conferred citizenship and civil rights according to its own laws to its own residents. It may have more similarities with some of the international organizations we belong to, like NATO or the UN, than it does to the current system of government. Ok, now on to the arguments made in the video. She claims that she and the driver are free inhabitants, and that they have the rights of United States citizenship, but cannot be held to the laws. Article 4 gives "free inhabitants” the right to travel from state to state without special restrictions and to be subject to the same duties and restrictions. This would include following traffic laws and restrictions on driving without a license, since the state requires the same of their inhabitants. Furthermore, the Constitution replaced the government laid out in the Articles of Confederation. Read Article 6 of the Constitution, which indicates that all prior debts incurred by the government shall be held as valid, as if they were under the Articles. This wording seems to indicate that this constitution replaces the Articles of Confederation, which makes sense since the Constitutional convention began as an attempt to revise the articles of confederation. Another problem with her argument is the fact that she is in California, which was never party to the Articles of Confederation. So even if you argue that the Articles of Confederation are still in effect, at least when they do not conflict with the US Constitution, 37 states were never subject to the Articles of Confederation, because they were not states during the period in which it was in effect. The congress invoked by the Articles of Confederation never accepted any additional states, so unless you are in one of the original 13 colonies, they wouldn't apply. So in summary, there is no legal status that one can claim that exempts them from following US laws, while granting the rights and privileges of citizenship. The US Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation, and while a few interstate agreements that were reached under the articles are still in effect today, there are no special rights or privileges granted by the Articles to individuals. The only people that have immunity in the US are diplomats of foreign sovereign nations, and even that is limited.

I've gotten into a dispute with my dad about that, which I thought you could get a ticket for not carrying your license even if your licensed, but my dad told me he did that but he told me the police officer said, DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN, so it's better to carry your license. No excuses intended

ELbabotas Shinigami, no you're not free, she has no idea what she's talking, free inhabitant was a law under the confederation which was later abolished and replaced by the constitution. It was basically so that if someone from one state with a specific set of laws went to another state with different laws they couldn't be arrested or deemed a criminal. It was the same with slaves, if you were free in one state and traveled to another where slavery was still in practice you wouldn't be considered a slave. They never abolished the law or whatever, but it has nothing to do with what she's talking about. You have to have a license to drive in every state, therefore they were breaking the law. The free inhabitant law isn't practiced anymore anyways. At least that's what I understand.

The fact that most of these people filmed in vertical mode annoyed me

I have mad respect for that police officer. The girl clearly did not know what she was talking about, making up stuff. And the police officer acted so calmly while the girl was having a massive fit
