I lived in Swindon for 20+ years till last November. This is the White House bridge carrying the rail line from Paddington west to Bristol and ultimately Wales. It is named after the pub which used to sit just the other side from this where this view is shown. For a long time it was the most frequently struck bridge in the UK! Quite an honour. Funnily enough when I lived in Scotland during the 80's I drove a coach full of architecture students to Oxford for a week so they could visit some of England's building oddities. We visited Swindon one Sunday for them to look at various buildings in the town like the Renault building for instance. They decided they wanted to go into town to find a bite to eat and the lecturer who was the arranger of this trip was giving me directions. "Turn left at the roundabout", he says. "Can't." I said. "Yeah you can!" he says. "Won't then!" I said, "Low bridge. "Oh" he said, "I never realised!" Which kinda sums up most drivers in the UK... The law says commercial vehicles must have a height displayed prominently in the cab in a position where the driver can see it clearly. Some companies operating vans are a bit lax but generally they comply. Whether the driver even noticed the signs is the main issue. Just like my lecturer mentioned earlier. "Oh" he said, "I never realised!"

Sure no problem, my reactions were bemusement.

I've been involved in over 50 bridge strike investigation. While many are caused by blatantly over height vehicles 4 were caused by incorrect hight signage. 5 were due to over paving the road reducing the clearance and 8 were due to the wrong hight sticker being put on the vehicle. If the driver is told his vehicle is 3 meters high and he hits a 3.1 metre bridge don't blame the driver
