Truth or Consequences, New Mexico as a Retirement Destination

Truth or Consequences (T or C), New Mexico seems like an excellent retirement destination for people who prefer to retire to a small town in the Southwest.
T or C offers many outdoor opportunities nearby, is within 2 - 3 hours of large cities like El Paso and Albuquerque (and only about an hour from Las Cruces), and is extremely affordable.
While T or C’s summers can be very hot, nearby mountain towns (e.g., Croudcroft, Ruidoso) and international destinations accessible through the El Paso and Ciudad Juarez airports may provide some relief.
The major downside I see to retiring in a place like T or C is that a retiree would probably need to drive a lot. While T or C has a hospital, doctor’s offices, and typical conveniences for a town of its size, I’m sure older residents leave town regularly for some healthcare and shopping, as well as outdoor recreation.
What do you think about retiring in Southwest New Mexico? And what would you like to share about T or C? Let us know in the comments!

The cheapness is appealing, I like the desert out there

The water issues worry me as the climate changes, but yeah, the desert is gorgeous, and clearly a lot of people are making it work.

TorC is a great place for a visit, especially the hot springs in winter. There's very little to do in TorC if you are going to live there long term.

How about the “downside” being that, from everything I have seen about it, it looks even worse than my old home of Alamogordo, NM? Hot in summer. Miserably windy in spring. Nothing but dust and chain link fencing. How about just giving up and retiring outside of my local landfill because the rent is cheap there?

I had a cargo trailer i made into a small home. On my way to Arizona. As soon as i entered New Mexico coming from Minnesota, i felt the freedom. The people are all so nice in that state i thought i was getting punked. I spent 7 months there and it was near perfect from the people to the weather to the sun rises and sunsets and mountains. For me, it was paradise. Im back in Minnesota selling everything I own. Im getting a truck and truck camper and heading back to New Mexico. Good video, ty.

As a former MN resident and current NorCal, am considering the same process. Love hot springs, and lower COL than CA. Have to check with my cat.

Overall T or C is a pretty run down place. It's pretty desolate. But, it is quiet. And there's plenty of small local cafes and there's even a brewery. The big draw is of course the healing waters of the hot springs. That's why a lot of people move there. It's been a place of healing for a long time. But like any small town, you'll see the same people everywhere you go, every day, and there's just not that many people or different types of stores, activities, or clubs around like you'd find in a larger town or city. T or C is very very small and there's a lot of empty or vacant property. Honestly it seems like a great place for young artists to move to establish studios, more than it seems like a retirement destination.

100% true. The hot springs were amazing and the little artsy block is cute but the majority of it is just sad-looking and leaves you feeling so depressed.
