Creators note:
Hello, my name is Zackary Smigel. I've been creating KZread videos since I was a kid. I started KZread full-time about five years ago. You might have seen me from Real Estate License Wizard, where I obtained 60,000 subscribers and over 5 million channel views. I have since left that channel for creative pursuits, and this is my first crack at starting something new. I'd appreciate a like and subscribe if this content interests you and I captured your attention for even just a few moments.
On a secondary note, this is a video I've been wanting to create for a while, and finally had time to do it! It's more focused and less exploratory than usual, but I believe it came out well. Like my last two videos, I was nervous to make this one, but you all like my videos where I am more critical, so I hope you enjoy it!

Not hating you at ALL! Thank you for this video. It was well researched. Is good to see the ugly side of this company. Back in 2019, I changed to Samsung as Apple for me, had changed a lot as a company, and many called me crazy. Now Samsung has changed for the worst as well. Both companies just manipulate ALL of us via marketing schemes. Samsung does slow down their phones as well, and I'm feeling it on a Galaxy S22 Ultra. Not even a year and a half old, and its issues galore. Time for a change, but to what? That is the question 🤔

I work in a repair shop and the part about repairability is getting worse every year. If they could get away with welding their phones shut they already would have. We have a contract with Apple which has 3 main terms: - Apple lets us buy their OEM batteries to do first-party replacements (these aren't available to the general public) - In return, we are only allowed to buy their batteries (no aftermarkets) - They provide us with the software to pair their batteries with their phones because they need special software to make them work The software has *never* worked and their support will do nothing about it. So we are stuck in a contract which effectively forbids us from doing battery repairs and there is nothing we can do. By the way, any iPhone after the 12 will disable FaceID if you replace the screen. Screen has nothing to do with FaceID but they'd love it if you bought a new phone so they make it really annoying to get it repaired.

The majority of folks are broke. That is why you do not see a lot of Sony Xperia phones in the United States in the wild. Sony is not in carrier stores and you can not get them thru bill credits. You pay Sony the 1k if you want their phones. When I see a person with an iPhone...i ask, did you buy it outright? The answer is no, I got it thru 36 month bill credit plan. When I explain to them that I can do so much more with an Android (without having to jailbreak anything) as opposed to a stock iPhone they ALWAYS give me a blank stare. Like you can literally see the whole "does not compute" on their faces because they simply cannot imagine a life without using their iPhones. I use an iPhone because every android phone I had had some major issue. Pixels? It’s fun when your phone loses the ability to make phone calls until you reboot it. Android auto glitching to hell? Who needs your navigation to work! Samsung? They cost as much as an iPhone now so there is no longer a value proposition there and they copied a lot of the things people didn’t like about the iPhone and thought selling a note without a stylus was a good idea!!! (Yes I think they brought it back but still!) Yes 100% you can customize android a lot more and for the majority of my life I was an android fan. However having major functions (phone, camera and others) just hard crash on me and not work during times when I needed it was a massive strike against them. Oh and I upgraded my phone at least once a year so I always had the current devices. I’m not comparing a 6 year old android or anything. Also at the time I switched to iPhone they did in fact have the best camera on the market and even if a phone comes out with a slightly better one that is a singular thing it may do better under certain situations. Holistically the iPhone gives me a better experience when I need to be able to just pick up my phone and have it working. Not have the battery randomly drained, camera not working, missed calls because it can’t receive phone calls anymore etc. This isn’t even taking into account how nice their walled garden of their ecosystem is. That is more subjective so I’m not making it a main point but they do a very good job with it. I tried a bunch of android watches and never cared, the Apple Watch however has become a staple for me. PS: I wrote this on my phone so please forgive typos and bad formatting and such.

If it's the latter, I'd still recommend switching over to Android, and just replacing products over time when their natural lifespan is over. I switched from Android to iOS and only lasted 8 months before I had moved back to Android. I thought I'd give it a shot after almost a decade of not using it, and although it was good overall, I do have many things I don't like about it, and also I hate Apple as a company. I just couldn't stand using it overall, it's far too restrictive, it dictates how you should use your phone. Plus, because they designed their phones to be unrepairable, in the case I accidentally break my phone, either I'd have to live with a phone with a broken screen, pay Apple for essentially the same value of my phone to repair the screen, or get a 3rd party replacement and have functions disabled, essentially rendering the phone undesirable in the case of selling the phone. Also, I believe the battery health mechanism to be a form of depreciating the iPhone to disrupt the second hand market by discouraging people from buying it, to encourage people to buy it new so Apple can get direct profits. It's also made worse by the fact that the battery is serialized to the phone, so phone refurbishment companies have to make do with what's left of the original battery, when they could've replaced the battery in the older models and it lasts as long as it can. With my Samsung devices, I can replace any parts, especially the battery where it's a consumable and will degrade overtime, it's nice that I can send it to repairs for cheap and won't have to worry about error messages or stuff.

I think the biggest problem with people who are currently Apple users that still buy Apple products even though they know what Apple is doing is the fact that it is what they are used to. Apple’s UI it’s super simple and easy for our little monkey brains to understand. As an apple user myself, I have looked at Samsung‘s phones and I’ve been scared to switch because it is scary to switch away into the unknown. that and the fact that there’s all these bad superstitions about Samsung phones. Green text messages, the “bad camera quality”, you name it. I agree with a lot of what you're saying but I feel like this is singling Apple out a little too much. Many points in this video could be applied to other brands, although they may not be as bad. I don't think USB-C in particular is the problem. The issue is that things are being adopted at different rates so you have a lot of peripherals that still use USB-A when computers are moving towards USB-C. Until we reach parity between the two, we're going to have problems on all laptops, although Apple is one of the biggest offenders. Some of the new thin-and-light laptops from companies like Dell are also sacrificing ports. A related note is that Apple tends to be the driving force behind a lot of trends, and other companies follow suit. I also agree that Apple tends to be more anti-consumer than most companies. The power that these big tech companies hold is dangerous.

Agreed. Not disagreeing with many of the points of the video, but I also feel like many of them, e.g., the upgrade cycle, apply to pretty much every major phone manufacturer. We could have a similar video for most big tech companies. Who is excited for the Pixel 8 in October? Connectors have always been a pain since I have been using computers, phones, and other tech, but at least we are moving toward commonality now between devices. That change causes friction no matter who is doing it. I have way too many devices on my pc, so I pretty much require a hub anyway. If I used a macbook that wouldn't be a big deal for me personally. Though I would buy one from Anker or another reputable third party.

Tons of great points in this video and as someone who uses Apple products and likes them, there’s no hate. In fact, I find it stranger that people who don’t use a product hate it when they don’t even use it. If they’ve used it before cool, but just because the experience they had was bad doesn’t mean it’ll be a bad experience for everyone. But anyways, a really good point was the whole update cycle thing, I really do dislike that but have come to think of it more as Apple trying to get SOMEONE to buy. Like I’ll upgrade my phone every 3 years maybe (when it feels slow or I have storage problems) and if there just didn’t happen to be a new phone that year then I might either go to a different brand or just not buy a phone that year. It still doesn’t mean that I like seeing a new phone every year and feeling like mine probably got nerfed but that’s the kind of reasoning I see behind the action.

I agree with you, except for the “changing ports every few years”. Bro, we’ve been waiting for 11 for Apple to finally put that great connector😂😭 And also, Apple has switched to USB-C because of the EU legislation, so it will have to stick to the port that the iPhone 15 comes with

Only for charging. There is no USB-C file transfers. No USB-C monitor support. No USB-C host docking to other devices. That is not how you implement USB-C.

I got a first gen ipad mini back in 2013. It still works perfectly fine in 2024. Problem is, my device stopped receiving updates and I cannot do much on it anymore. I saw that, took my sister's cue, and switched to Android. I am glad I didn't get sucked into the Apple ecosystem. My alma mater used exclusively Apple devices. I hated it. I ended up having to ask my prof to unlock a classroom we were just in because I left my usb in it. (Seriously. Why is the port ON THE BACK?) I used my windows laptop whenever I could, except whenever we needed to use programs only available on school computers.

I don't think it's a bad thing that apple fans despise "green text bubbles", that's an awesome indicator of a bad person and one you should stay away from, because what's the problem of someone using an android phone? these iphone fans probably think you're poor or they have a very superficial way of thinking, which is not a trait i would like to have on a potential love partner

I definitely agree with the whole right to repair thing, it should be easier for people to repair their own stuff if they can. Buuuuut, I do disagree with a few other things you mentioned. Regarding cables, I think the switch to USB-C is a good thing. They changed from the old 30-pin connector to lightning over a decade ago, before USB-C was even a thing, so given it’s changing as the EU mandates it and every other manufacturer also changes, I don’t think that’s a negative. Also you missed that the EU are mandating that *every* electronic device should use USB-C, so the decision to switch to it on Macs as devices originally began the move seems kinda forward thinking in hindsight. (And you can get a USB-A to USB-C adapter for like, $3 now). The ‘slowing down old devices’ thing is a bit of a misnomer. The iPhone 6S (IIRC) had a batch of bad batteries that degraded much quicker and started causing problems. The issue is that when doing something intensive, the CPU can require higher voltage than a degraded battery can provide, causing a restart. This led to an update that reduced max CPU speed when the battery aged, because the alternative was the device restarting. Imo that sounds pretty consumer friendly to me. On releasing new phones, people are buying new phones all the time, why not incrementally improve them? You’re still making and shipping them after all, what difference does it make if you put a faster chip in them? And it drops the price of the older model when it probably wouldn’t on a 2-year release cycle. Most people won’t buy a new phone every year and if they do, clearly they’re rich enough that we shouldn’t care about them. Anyway, just my thoughts. I think people can get a little too lost in the sauce over what’s basically just a KZread and Instagram device.

I think the switch to USB-C is a good thing for phones. I should have conveyed that more. Like I said, Samsung has had that for six years, and to me, Apple should have done that sooner. The MacBook in 2015 USB-C switch is where you lose me. My PC has both USB-C and USB-A ports imo they should have done back then or included a dongle. As others have pointed out its was performance but again how difficult would it have been for Apple to include a dongle? The phone every year thing is just a bit of a wash to me. It reminds me of cars being released every year. Should it be allowed? Of course, but is it really necessary? I don't think so, especially when a company tries to brag about sustainability; to me, it's hypercritical. But I do understand how some people look forward to it - I just don't see the appeal. I definitely missed some details I wish I had covered. I definitely am not the most tech-savvy, lol. Honestly, I was trying to create something from the average person's perspective because, again, to me, a lot of this is confusing and a big part of my issue. Thanks for the comment, and watch like always!
