    A bit late to the party, but just one word - magnificent! A model that big and that complex deserves all the time and effort you put into it, and it absolutely paid off. Hard to see how it could be improved. Lots of really great tips and techniques , and your painting skills are top notch - the layering of washes to achieve depth and complexity is an Old Masters painting technique - you can 't get the depth any other way. And inspirational too - really makes me want to take up ship modelling again after many, many years - thanks for sharing your epic build!

I'm glad you enjoyed it and if you picked up a couple things here and there that makes it totally worth it. Good luck in all your modelling adventures. The Mount Everest of ship models... conquered! I am guessing you are feeling a strong sense of accomplishment and satisfaction knowing that all of the hours of hard work have paid off in the form of a great model that you can enjoy looking at for years to come. I liked the way that you added subtle texture to the painted surfaces without being too heavy-handed. I am a beginner and I am so inspired by what you have built. I am working on a fleet of Royal Navy ships and subs and the 1/200 scale is what I aspire to in a few years (after I have given myself the time to refine my technique.) I picked up alot of valuable tips and I want to thank you for posting these videos. Well done sir!

    While I've built a few model ships in small 1/700 scale, and a couple in larger 1/350 scale, a 1/200 would be a dream build for me. Even though I don't have an airbrush, or the room to display one. Just having it in the box as a dream kit would be enough for me.

    Actually, though I’ve been kit and scratch building models for about 50 years, I find watching you to be enjoyable and informative. You seem, highly adept and your attention to detail is very good indeed. I suppose I could say I enjoy your craftsmanship, and you often keep me company while I build. But those days are dwindling now. I’m sick and losing function in my hands, do detail work is hugely difficult. So, fellow maker, keep on keepin on, as they say. I wish you many more years of success and happiness and, as usual, I’ll be tuning in. BTW, Big ships are my joy, and anyone who makes them has my undivided attention. Thank you for sharing your experience, and for teaching an old dog some new tricks!

    Arrgghh !!! Just spotted your vid in my recommendations....It looks truly magnificent BUT it would warrant a complete 10 minute "final reveal" video all of its own, preferably with a camera upgrade. It's like getting a 10 second viewing of the Mona Lisa through tissue paper !!! But anyhow congratulations on an incredible looking job. Hope we can see more of it !!!!

    Thanks m8! I try and keep my videos under 30 minutes but if you want to see more photos I have them posted on Facebook and Instagram which there’s a direct link to on my KZread home page. If your interested in helping out and supporting my channel with a small financial contribution you can do so here. www.buymeacoffee.com/SmallSoldier. I’ll be putting the money towards getting new camera equipment. Cheers.

    Night Shift: "I've never painted a figure before" --> turns out amazing. Small Soldier: "I've never done a ship before" --> same thing....amazing result! All that masking looked insane though...I would be so afraid of pulling off tiny details and PE! You are brave....well, you're actually just really experienced :)

    Thanks, Evan! This project almost broke me... as insane asylum broke. It was fun for the most part but you really have to want to build a ship model to take a project like this on... or in my case be silly enough to take on a commission. It's probably not something I'd tackle again but I do put everything I have into a project no matter how difficult or time-consuming it is. Learning something new is always refreshing and intriguing to me. Thanks for watching and I appreciate you taking the time to leave a nice comment. Cheers, my friend!

    I understand it was a commission build and would add further costs, but getting an aftermarket wooden deck would make things alot easier. Superb work!

    Yes, it would and I would have done that if it were my own model. The aftermarket set had the wooden deck but the client wanted me to omit certain large tasks so he could actually get it before he or I kick the bucket. 😂 It was a very long project 2.5 years and we both just wanted it to end. Thanks for your comments and interest. Cheers!🙌🍻

    Re: painting decking and masking off details, always prefer the real wood kits that can be bought for just about any kits. They are easy to prep and go on fairly easy. For me, they offer far better detail (especially on a larger kit), especially after applying a panel line wash. Also, some of those deck details, as too a great many other things, can be cut off, sanded and replaced with after market photoetching kits. Again, the difference in detail is remarkable and adds so much to the finished product.

    Cut a square ⬛️ from an elastic band and glue it to the both sides of a flat head pair tweezers! Trumpeter master tool's does a great set of 4 for like 7 buck's best one's I've used I'd be lost without them! I've a couple set's modified haha but it works! Love this video. You mention the Tamiya primer at the beginning and using German Grey instead of hull red, but what grey did you use above the boot line and on the superstructure, please?

  • @lukesanders8258

    @lukesanders8258

    Scrap that. You talk about it later in the video. I’m about to start a Flyhawk 1/700 and was thinking of using grey Mr Surfacer on its own without any top coat hence my interest. Firstly I figured the grey was about right and secondly I worry I will swamp detail with too much paint at that scale if I do too many coats. The fact that you have done this with huge success on this model has given me the confidence to go for it.

  • @SmallSoldier

    Thanks man! The colours used were Tamiya German Grey in the spray can for the bottom portion then Tamiya grey spray can primer for the main colour.

  • @SmallSoldier

    @SmallSoldier

    Жыл бұрын

    @@lukesanders8258 Yes I thought the Grey primer was very close to British "battleship" grey. I would decant the primer and use an airbrush to spray it on since it's 1/700 scale. Tamiya sprays level out really great but at that scale it could potentially obsure details. Good luck with your model! Cheers.

    Do heat lamps help dry the paint faster? So you can move on to, further down the line on the build. Heat lamp at a safe distance, so not to melt the plastic.
