Trumpet Mouthpiece Gap and Why Should It Matter

Музыка

As a trumpet player and a music instrument repairer I have found that mouthpiece gap (or annulus) can affect your playing quite much. I have tried Bob Reeves Sleeves system, the gap regulator in Courtois Evolution trumpet and different gap sizes in King Liberty trumpet and Selmer Super Sterling trumpet. There is also Stomvi Flex Coupler system but I haven't tried that.
Tällä videolla esittelen miten trumpetin suukappaleen ja suuputken väliosan suuruus vaikuttaa soittamiseen.

Yep that’s it. The way each one blows matters too, volume & airflow pressure makes a huge impact on it. Another point of view it’s, if it’s worse with zero gap, why not chose a larger Backbore ? The big names havee we been talking about the gap only on trumpets …. There aren’t Gap on flugelhorns ?

Well said! I think gap is not such an issue in flugelhorn because it has conical bore and not cylindrical like trumpet.

@@timyllymthere aren’t Gap in Flugel Systems. The mouthpiece enters directly in Leadpipe. So, there aren’t any hall tube in the way…… What makes a Gap it’s the Receiver with Pipe matching, originating a space between the two.

also depends upon the trumpet: no gap can improve the 3rd valve intonation below staff, improve intonation above staff, and improve the timbre. stronger players may prefer the more open blow and easier bending. each player must find his optimum via experimentation.

HI MR. MYLLYMAKI ,,,AT 6.17 OF THE VIDEO I HEARD FOR FEW SECONDS WHAT FOR ME IS SYMPATHETIC VIBRATIONS, THOSE VIBRATIONS ARE HEAR EVEN BY THE PLAYER, FOR ME USUALLY ARE PRODUCED IN THE VALVES AND HARMONIC CAGE, SOME OTHERS CALL THEM HARMONICS VIBRATION BUT NO MATTER THEY ARE ALWAYS UP OR DOWN THE NOTE YOU ARE PLAYING AND MANAGE TO DISTRACT THE PLAYER AND IS EXHAUSTING HEAR THEM IN A LONG NOTE MOSTLY, AT 6.17 IS WHEN I ONLY HEARD IT. SOME SAYS IS FIXED WITH WEIGHTING THE VALVES CAPS TO A HEAVIER WEIGHT. THANK YOU FOR THE EXPLANATION ABOUT THE GAP AND THEIR UPS AND DOWNS..

Hi Max Gal and thanks for your message. I think I know what you mean with sympathetic/harmonic vibrations, but at 6.17 of the video I make that sound consciously by singing at the same time as I blow. It is a growling effect which is used in jazz usually by making noises from your throat.

@@timyllym GOOD ONE, THIS MAY BE THE BEST POST ON THIS ISSUE BECAUSE i USE AN Xtreme MOUTHPIECE AND IS A LITTLE BIT LONGER WHEN I MEASURED IT . I BELIEVE I NEED A LITTLE CHANGE AND THERE ARE NOT SO MUCH OPTIONS AND ARE EXPENSIVE. I AM NO PRO BUT I BELIEVE A V CUP IN THE SAME CUP SIZE I HAVE WOULD FORCE ME TO SAVE THE BACKBORE UNTIL I CAN FIND OR CAN FIND WHO MAKE IT THAT FOR ME. WELL EXPLAINED THE WHOLE ISSUE. THE BEST.

This is really helpful!!! Thanks a lot. BTW: Does your trumpet have a tuning slide at the rear of the bill like a trombone? Is that your own design?

Thanks! The trumpet is not my own design, it is an Eclipse MHY made in England, and yes it has the tuning slide in rear.

Interresting video. I heard about that '' gap'' notion some times ago, but I always wonder how it comes with fluegelhorns or instruments with a similar smooth mouthpipe (since the sliding mouthpipe is used for tuning the instrument there's no proper mouthpiece receiver, then no gap). Have you some info ?

  • @timyllym

I think that there is no gap in flugelhorns because the tubing is just getting bigger, and there is no step where tubing would become smaller. I think the air flows in different way (maybe better) in horns with smooth mouthpipe. So the gap is not an issue in those instruments.

It would be interesting to see how a 4.5 sleeve would work? It could be even better in tune than the #5?

Yes, might be so. One would probably need a full set of sleeves for thorough testing.

No, I don't think so. Trombone Mouthpipe is different than in trumpet, there is no gap in trombones.
