They became a sovereign nation a long time ago. The other difference is the people of Ukraine young and old came out to defend *their* country. Only a couple of months ago, many of them were calling the Ukraine invasion "fake".

I only wish the lady no more or less than what happened to my father. In '49 was picked from his bed in Bucharest Romania and took to the Gulak in Siberia. In '55 after Stalin died, they released them and dropped back in town at the train station. His mental capacities were such that took him 5 months to get home. People often embrace autocracy because they believe that they will benefit from it by getting what they want - power, wealth, status, or the ability to impose their "just" beliefs and values on others - and believe (foolishly) that they won't eventually be a victim of it. "It's okay to oppress and persecute others, as long as it's not me." They'll even try to rationalize it by convincing themselves that it isn't oppression at all because it's happening to the people they don't like and whom therefore "deserve it." And when you have cable "news" outlets like Fox News constantly telling their viewers that the people that don't share their values, don't agree with them, or are simply different from them are their enemies trying to tear down the entire country and thus need to be feared, hated, and punished, they are being primed to embrace autocratic rulers who will do that for them.

My parent's generation is waning- getting fewer and far in-between. The people who have first hand experience with World War II and the after effects. My generation is aging- those of us who heard about the horrors of Hitler and witnessed the Soviet Union's repression of its people. People born after Regan demanded that the Wall be torn down are less affected by history if their teachers don't teach them about it all. People old enough to have been around yet don't care? Those people are the ones being lied to and taken in by Trump and his cronies. 1984 and Brave New World are getting closer as we speak if we don't vote Trump out and don't get him in jail.
