Trump's Trial Has Already Damaged the Office of the Presidency - John Yoo

To limit and undo that damage and restore the rule of law, Republicans
may have no choice but to respond in kind.

At this point, if we wanted to prevent the US from becoming a banana republic, we'd need to build a time-machine.

Situations like this remind us we are living in the JudeoChristianLiberalDemocracy era and not the constitutional republic

Republicans should, but there's no indication that they would. One would infer that that's why this happened in the first place. I'm not an american, but I see that this John Yoo is a republican, which I guess is the real significance of this text - someone is not toeing the party line, or is pretending not to (the party line being "fuck Trump, we never liked the guy"). In any case, that's an interesting discussion about the importance of prosecutors. A similar thing happened in my country's politics this year..

The long list of non-persecuted crimes of statesmen brought up here sort of undermines the point being made. I agree that the president should probably be able to act while not sidetracked by fears about his person. On the other hand, you'd hope for a clean closet president to begin with. Maybe a standard of actually prosecuting might end up in cleaner politicians, together with a culture of a more refined looking and alleged crimes?

To get that, you would need to have enough power to convict your allies and enemies for corruption. That’s not feasible in a two party system if you plan on retaining office for long
