Trump's America | DW Documentary

The US in the 2020 election year is a country deep in crisis. It’s been torn apart by the debate on racism, and millions have been infected with the coronavirus. On top of that, its president is pouring oil on the flames with his Twitter tirades.
At the beginning of the year, things were looking good for Donald Trump: the economy was doing well, unemployment figures were at a 50-year low, his job approval rating was rising, and the Democrats were preoccupied with themselves. But then came the coronavirus, a hazard that the president initially made light of, saying it would miraculously disappear. Instead of a miracle, the crisis hit the United States harder than any other country. The economy is in the doldrums. And COVID-19 is making the shortcomings of the health care system glaringly obvious.
Black Americans have been hit harder by the coronavirus than most. A higher proportion of them work in low-wage jobs that offer little protection against the virus, and they are less likely to have health insurance. The rage expressed in demonstrations against racism is being fuelled by the corona crisis and the mass unemployment it has triggered across the US.
It is hard to imagine that the economy will recover quickly - despite the trillions of dollars Trump is giving to companies. It is also hard to imagine that the millions of unemployed will have jobs again by the time the election is held.
Filmmakers Claudia Buckenmaier and Marion Schmickler traveled through the swing states of Arizona, Wisconsin and Michigan and asked people how the economic and health crisis is affecting them. What hopes do voters have going into November’s election? The bitter dispute between Republicans and Democrats and Donald Trump’s divisive style of government has brought democracy in the US to brink of the abyss. The distrust is so great that the Democrats even expect that Trump will reject the election result if he loses. Unimaginable? The Democrats seem to be preparing for exactly this scenario.

The one thing I don't get is why do people get so fascinated with being a Republican or a Democrat. You don't need to vote a bad republican just because you were a republican before & vice versa. Vote based on people & their actions. People shouldn't feel obligated to vote for a bad person just because of their affiliation with a certain party.

I explained to you over the course of an A4 page I dislike Trump and Biden equally and would never vote for any of them, and explained to you why with references to studies, universities and Washington Post. It was extremely well-written. Those comments are exactly the ones that are removed, they actually teach people what they need to know. It's a pretty huge wakeup call for the sheeple that voted for Trump. World history informs us well what happens when you elect a demagogue that advocates toxic populism within a democracy, and it universally never ends well. Even if you're a conservative, character undermines policy. His lack of empathy, his inability to listen to others, his refusal to listen to experts/science, his lack of education/holistic knowledge, his lack of humility, his lack of discipline - All completely antithetical to the party that essentially started with the epitome of character and intelligence: Abraham Lincoln. Keep in mind that there's a very good reason that, on a county by county basis, those areas with the least educational attainment voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2016. Ignorance is not your friend, and I (perhaps a little ironically) say this as a proud American myself =) Bottom line: Chemotherapy is painful.

Watching this movie has revealed and clarified a lot about Americans and their though process. First, a good number of American have a very narrow understanding of social systems and socialism. They think if the nation takes care of its people there is no "Democracy". Second there is a profound narrow mindedness with most Americans. There seem to be a grave lack of ability to see the bigger picture when looking at issues. Race, immigration, discrimination and misogyny.

From the outside, it looks like people are pushed into poverty. Most of the money spent by the US government went into Wallstreet and made the rich even richer on the back of those who can afford less every year. I don't recall Mr Trump promising it that way in 2016. You called everyday worldwide wellfare "socialism". Then, why are there so many democratic countries in the world that are not "socialist" but provide wellfare? There is much to be said for being an entrepreneur, providing a service, and benefitting from having taken some risks. I do feel for those who have small business and who may be losing them as a result of this pandemic. HOWEVER, this pandemic does indicate that there needs to be some fundamental changes in the economic structure of this country. Many large businesses are making record profits, and the tiny minority at the top are getting MUCH richer as a result of the pandemic and the inability of small business and employees to survive. The economy has been teetering for years through different administrations and Congresses, and the working poor (including business owned by the working poor) have not had the support that they need to withstand any amount of bad luck. Things have got to change fundamentally, but Trump offers nothing but blatant lies, smokescreens, and mirrors. The country has become a house of horrors for many who, just a year ago, had convinced themselves that if they just try harder, work harder, and cut expenses where possible, everything would end up okay.

The greed of a few rules us into utter chaos. Many people are awake now thinking there must be a meaningful change coming about that's actually long overdue, but no one seems to know to do nor can we agree on any particular thing. So the dishonest system of greed intentionally divides us only pitting people against one another. Our underlying problems and weaknesses were already at play under the veneer of mainstream media illusions before Covid began. There's a club at the top of the debt based pyramid most of us aren't in that only works in our favor when it has an agenda of developing the current era high tech global age as was the case after WW2 for many years when it was a small business climate and seemed to be a patriotic united state, but now obviously being dismantled to clear the way to cement a full on dictatorial technocratic totalitarian one world order of the financial elites. So the heroes must step up again to fight for and save the world or all is lost.

@@TUBESPECIFIC1 Hi Tube Specific! I couldn't agree more. This is all part of something much bigger, much darker, and much more dangerous creature than most of us can even imagine. I found your phrase "technocratic totalitarian one world order of financial elites" to be a concise and comprehensive identification of the cause of the problem and, at the same time, ominously predictive. What can we do? What will we do? We are hopelessly divided between willfully ignorant and enlightened, stupid and intelligent, dishonest and honest, rich and slave, and greedy and, um, not so greedy. The Irish poet Yeats had a good line in his poem, The Second Coming. In it he wrote: "The best lack all conviction while the worst are filled with passionate intensity." I'm afraid that this country is hopelessly fractured. Regardless of who wins the election, this country will be torn apart in a way that makes Vietnam look like a picnic in the park. And everything that we say, including this post, will be monitored, categorized, and archived for later use. How do we know this? Because it is already happening.

There's money and power to be made in consolidating and buying up competitors. It's the treadmill of capitalism. If you don't control for that end state, you get 2 or 3 big conglomerates owning everything, and killing the "free" part of "free market." No competitors, no variety, just one company that owns the 3 options you can choose from and no incentive to innovate or lower costs for consumers. I read a few weeks ago that tweaker metal scrapper thieves are already getting pieces that are on the 2nd hand market South of the border. An insecure destabilizing fragile America is what China wants and the Democrats are supportive of that. 1,973 miles of Great Wall in a dangerous border area is possible for China had national security and the art of war a very long time ago to combat against invading the Mongol golden hoard.

@JT Yang Sure. China needs America just as America needs China. If the trade relationship broke down, then we'd both have big problems. America needs all that stuff we no longer make and China needs the cash in flow to power it's new greatness. The Western political cult you mention is actually the Western hegemony that has America at the center of the global economy with the dollar as the reserve currency of the world. The thing China CCP wants is to replace America to declare itself the world super power and then make Yuan the reserve currency. Not only might that cause war with America, but you'll also have to deal with India too which is a great big nuclear super power nation. If there was one world order today or if ever, then we'd not have all this nonsense and it would be united. Americas version is the New World Order and China's is One Belt One Road. I imagine there will be a big war some day and then the UN and World Bank becomes the one world order.

at 19:28 is he arguing for more government assistance or less? Is it really a bad thing to make sure at the least that a poor family gets that nutrition and food by food stamps? If you economically see people as an asset that is just as important as road maintenance, hospitals etc. then I don't think that is necessarily a bad economic policy. Percentage-wise some kids if they didn't have to worry about having food everyday can focus more on their studies. Or perhaps to boost more employment and diversification of the labour-force they can spend less worry and pursue jobs and government programs to get youth employed. It is a sad inspiring story that he grew up having to eat pancakes but why should that be a thing to be celebrated?

Now, for my general comment; I sure hope the parents get a handle on their young daughter to make sure she understands the importance of civil servant qualifications. It's fine to want to see a woman in higher positions of leadership/authority (like President) but it's not fine to want it just because we've never had a female President. We need qualified people all the way around with depth and breadth of experience.
