Trump in Dubai & China in Africa (VICE on HBO: Season 4, Episode 10)

Ойын-сауық

The United Arab Emirates, and Dubai in particular, are often described as paradise in the Middle East. But the 5 million migrant workers who live there, making up more than half the population, have an entirely different experience. They live in appalling conditions, and regularly end up with nothing, even after years of hard work -- and now, many of them are employed on a project bearing the name of Trump.
China is financing more infrastructure projects and selling more goods to Africa than any other trade partner in the world, with a large share of investments linked to the extraction of resources. VICE heads to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and South Africa to meet the characters behind the business deals and explore what this increasingly prominent China-Africa relationship could mean for the future of global politics.

Vice covers REAL stuff. There are SOME parts of Vice that are trivial. However, when it comes to real world issues (not just American issues), Vice is unmatched.

Long Zeng I can think of people of higher quality, but, I will also keep that down. I think the problem is that, of all of the buildings being built in Dubai they choose Trump's Dubai golf course.... Fear of having alterier motives is a serious problem in consertative motives...

I deployed to Saudi Arabia in 2011, and I can say from first-hand experience that "Third Country Nationals," or TCNs, are as close an analogue to slaves that you'll find. I remember one asking how much my smartphone cost, to which I replied around $400. He said that was more than he made in months. I also remember overseers in the contracted company the U.S. hired being physically aggressive towards TCNs, even beating them sometimes if need be. It's not just Trump. This is a longstanding _American_ policy to facilitate these conditions and literal human trafficking. TCNs also said once they arrived in KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), their passports were taken by their hosts and they were literally restricted entirely, condemned to work and abide by their masters' wishes. God Bless America. I also remember the phrase "Allah shines a blind eye to Dubai." Army contractors liked to get their prostitutes from Dubai.

I deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1997 and I noticed how the TCNs were treated and it truly opened my eyes to how they were treated by not only their own government but how the American government is complicit in it even though they'll say their SOFA agreements help boost local economies.

On the contrary. Lots of Africans on youtube and on reddit have said other wise. Read books like "The Dragon's Gift" where the author is a professor that graduated in International Development Program at American University's School of International Service in Washington DC, people that actually know stuff. Africa has stagnated and fought for decades under the western model of aid. Africa is now growing at an unprecedented speed in just the few short years that the Chinese has been involved.

I just find it funny how when yellow skinned people doing it now the west will go and s and journalists to try and fish out wrong things that might be done, but never remember or look at how the colonials devided and destroyed so much, even to this day you can't go anywhere in the west without some stupid "relief" organisation asking for donations to feed starving kids. Stop with the bags of maize and actually own up to what situation you put em in and actually pump proper money in to building infrastructure and education

How unfortunate... I grew up in Dubai, thinking the world of the UAE only to become older and wiser and seeing first hand the UAE's dark and seedy human right practices. What a shame for a country that has the power to be a champion for such issues instead of a thug accomplice to inhumane practices.

China is intelligently and quietly making inroads all over the world. This should make us very nervous in the USA. We are wasting our time with an oblivious moron as our leader while China is quickly becoming larger, wealthier, and more powerful than the US. My concern for Africa is that development will cost them their precious environment and wildlife. The world wants to develop their standards of living and consumption according to western standards, but the wests' standard of living is horribly unsustainable. This will accelerate environmental catastrophe. We must imagine and adapt new ways of living and developing on this planet that respects the environment, others species right to life, and ensures the human rights of all laborers. We need a values system change.

As long as humans sees on race religion or skin color is more superior than the other this will continue to happen to the human race. The Europeans and all religious institutions in this had and have the power to change the world for the betterment of the world if they want to. I watched this documentary twice and, aside from the name of one development under construction, I felt the real issue was pointing out the conditions placed on foreign workers by Saudi Arabia. I'm all for voicing one's opinions but I feel as if focusing on Trump as the central point of focus detracts from the reality that this is about the workers, not geopolitical leaders. If all someone takes away from this is "Trump's a bad president" or "Trump's a good president" they've proved that both the left and right political spectrums are filled with arrogant narcissists who don't give a shit about human rights.

China is more than welcome in Africa and their emergence is the best thing that could happen to Mother Africa in the last 300 years. It might seem incongruous but the mere fact that you feel the need to put subtitles on Africans speaking clearly understandable English in the report, shows the level of disdain of anything Black/African , the westerners still abhor in their deep subconsciousness. As for the Brit-English sounded Journalist of Chinese origin and others like her, please stop being used as pawns in the China-Africa Western media bashing . Africans are very conscious of the level of corruption of our leaders but unlike the old days when World Bank/IMF Western countries loans of one day ended up in Banks in London, Paris, New York , the following day, this time around we can at least point a finger on where the money goes. I'm not even alluding to the colonial period, when African resources were systemically looted .
