You are very fortunate to have found a piece of property with so much water flowing through it. For so many homesteaders in Portugal, inadequate water supply is a very big limiting factor. I fact, I imagine, based on my perception of the elevation change and the flow of water you could easily install a 400 watt AC hydro turbine to supplement your PV power supply. The benefit of hydro (and why I recommend small scale AC to start) is that it delivers power 24/7/365 - and that adds up to a greater number than you imagine.

You are definitely in one of the most beautiful areas of Portugal. If you have time go and visit "Gerês". The way Beatrix counted the potatoes in her hand was so sweet ❤. I speak English everyday but when I have to count, can't help it, but comes through in mother language 😂. Beatrix just did the same! She's a little Portuguese 😍 now. Another beautiful episode.

Hello, I probably wouldn’t know about your family except for you visiting the Newbies. I keep track of two other families who are making Portugal their home. They are the Finca Life (there’s a lot to be learned from these two since they’ve been converting their barn (?) to a lovely home and Bea and Leo it’s crazy to see how they are coming back around as they were devastated by the wildfires from about 9 mos ago and they had just purchased it and haven’t even moved into it. After the fires there were flash floods which brought on landslides. Makes me think of SoCal where I was from. Ok I’m writing to give a few tips on your tomatoes: The leaves poking to five or six problems but this is what I think regarding yours. Tomatoes love full sun. That’s where I have always grown mine and Southern California gets just as hot as your Portugal. Actually where I grew up and lived got to 100 and even 110-117 Fahrenheit. It may be that you’ll need to trim out the trees above to get sun to them. Not chop it down but trim so they have shadow and light. They need at least 6 hours of southern exposure sun on them. Try that next year. Always plant tomatoes in a different location each year or they won’t have enough nitrogen because tomatoes use up a lot of nitrogen each season. Add nitrogen to the place they were at so whatever you put there will have what it needs. If you look at different products in the garden center-fertilizers and composts- there will be three numbers on the container. It will say NKP or maybe it’s NPK -doesn’t matter but the three alpha numeric means 1st one is nitrogen, for green, 2nd is for flowers and 3rd is for strength . For tomatoes and any other acidic plants like citrus, certain other flowers need it also but enough said on that for now. If you are going for beautiful blooms second number is most important. Just the same all three numbers can be the same. Tomato plants don’t like getting there leaves the same for squash. By the way, they also like air circulation. Hot and humid kill. I was taught at a very early age that “One year seed, equals seven years weed.” Meaning if you allow the seeds of a weed to drop it will take you seven years of weeding for that little mistake. If the plants have been attacked by a virus sorry to say. You could give it a weed of two-if it continue with everything has to go, all that is sick now, in hopes that it won’t get to the healthy ones. Never put diseased cuttings in your compost it will migrate into something you planted when you used it. Compost needs to be in as much sun possible this way the center will get good and hot and kill weed seeds and hopefully kill the virus that may have gotten in there. You check for heat by putting in the pitch fork about half way down and lift it up if there is no smoke lay what’s on the fork back down and check again in a week. Once it’s good and hot mix it up and do it again in a couple seeks. Then use half and mix in new stuff to process that. If you want natural fertilizer: well Rotted compost B will be your nitrogen, then there is blood meal and bone meal. Yes blood and bone for they are dust of the earth but you can grow beautiful plants, flowers, veggies and fruit. If you get Scott’s fertilizer there you should be able to get it . They each have their own packaging. Blood for blooms, bone for strong growth. If you don’t know why a plant doesn’t look healthy cut it back or remove the whole thing and and destroy it with fire as you should do with those you trimmed the other day.😊 So much to say, no time to say it all. A couple quick things: Sorry I know this got long! Tomatoes don’t like wet feet and need quick draining soil but not sand. Put your finger in the soil and if the soil is dry from 1 to 2 inches then water well perhaps 1 or 2 liters. Don’t water again until it is 1 to 2 inches dry. After a while you get used to how plants grow in your soil. And the last--when it’s getting time to harvest cut back on the watering and the juices of any veg or fruit will be more concentrated of the juices therefore the flavor. Yugoslav to go I hope I help Katherine Woodstock GA USA 🇺🇸

If you dont mind a little advice on the dam. Build the sides strong but allow the middle to wash away every winter. This will flush away the years accumulated sand and grit. Use a long, slightly bowed downwards, log to create a wide shallow waterfall top lip to the dam. This allows top overflow during the summer, which keeps the top surface of the pool free from leaves and other floaty stuff. If all else fails in a dry summer, through a tarpaulin over the whole dam, weight it down and conserve every drop

Moving your garden up to the house terrace is an excellent idea. If you are going to have a garden that produces mightily, you need to spend at least a little bit of time with it each day - even if it is just a walkthrough. The terrace you planted this year could be put into densely planted varieties of squash, root vegetable (beets, carrots, potatoes all heavily mulched with straw) and corn (interplanted) with the objective of out competing the weeds and improving the soil the fertility of the soil. Regarding the watercress, it may be a fun experiment with you children to collect some mature watercress seeds, dry them and save them to plant for the next growing season. The children will then have experienced the full botanic cycle. Also, regarding the watercress, I would pull the plants that have formed seed heads to revel the sweet watercress that has been shaded by the large plants. That you will give you another opportunity to collect a gobb of watercress this season. Your greenhouse plants are dry. Give them a good watering. Remember, what is in the greenhouse does not get watered naturally. That is why your cucumbers have gone wonky. Veggies like their roots to have fairly consistent moisture.

Pretty cool providing your needs and most of all how the kids enjoy in all they can help with...and with good friends around ...wonderful😊❤ and how cool ..their are spiking Portuguese so well, good accents and pronunciations ....of course you know this is the Portuguese in Portugal...in Brazil it has a different accent ...and some manners in how using the words..but you are doing really well....I teach English in Brazil and taught English for Americans who were going to work in Portugal and Brazil...it is so cool how it makes people so motivated when they realize they are learning and able to communicate in another language...like becomes full of new things plus making friends easily 🤗💯

I know the river is on your property but does it flow onto others property feed under ground and what are your water rights because the EU is strict about those things . If you slow something down stream or in adverfantly divert something down stream on another’s property you could have a legal issue and very angry neighbors. Especially if they farm. Having said that it looks very fun . You guys have gotten so much done . Looks really nice . So happy you are having fun.

Yes the veg definitely tastes way better doesn’t it, even if it is wonky and small 😅 So great to have you here, thank you see you next Sunday ☺️

Great eco, educational area you have! Enjoy! Just wondering, do you have snakes? In Tennessee we have snakes in the creeks.

Yes definitely an educational area ☺️ We haven’t seen any water snakes but we have seen some land snakes but luckily they are safe ones ☺️

@@THESCOTTERS Há palavras em português que não são fáceis e as vossas crianças pronunciam de forma admirável! Bravo!! Boa sorte para vós todos!
Remove some rocks in the bottom of the pool, replace with sand and it will be lovely underfoot.
