Weird how I do everything right handed except swing things hockey, golf and baseball. Throw right, play tennis right and even table tennis. I just remember at a young age when my grandfather was trying to teach me he'd get frustrated because I couldn't hit the ball right handed. So one time at the driving range he grabbed a lefty set from the proshop and boom we were off I was finally making contact and so on and so fourth!

Hi Shane - good on Granddad for getting you started! It seems you got there in the end - the key is to experiment. As ever, the task should lead us to technique. Happily, we don’t impose on children these days - in my childhood we were forced to write right-handed, creating real difficulties for left handed kids. Thanks for your comments, Kind regards, Luther.

One of the many reasons golf is so hard is that left and right are dominating at different stages in the golf swing in fractions of seconds! All sports are easier 1 handed, we only use 2 hands in sports with heavy implements and objects to be hit ie badmington/TT is nearly all wist/forearm The lead/left side is the power side it handles the massive weight of the swinging club because it is in a much stronger biomechanical position ie it is linked to big shoulder/back/chest muscles. The right arm adds speed and shaft/ clubface control .I can still hit a wedge further left arm only than right arm only.I can throw a frisbee further lead arm than trail arm.But my hcp/ballstriking improved massively when i learnt to load my right arm correctly! This battle/blend of right and left is why golf is so hard to master eg unless you learnt to play a 2handed backhand as a kid( they had to because they are weak) its virtually impossible to learn it as an adult. Similarly kids have to use groundforce to swing the heavy golf club, adult males dont! getting how to use groundforce to dominate is THE hardest thing to get when learning as an adult male golfer.

For me I’m right handed for most things but in baseball I was a left handed hitter, I go right foot first on a skateboard (same as a left handed stance) and started learning golf left handed because of those things. Interesting for me and why I couldn’t imagine doing anything lefty but the stance/golf swing.

Hi Gordon - simple answer that will clear your mind! Your backswing should ignite by loading the left shoulder to your throat in one smooth, deliberate and powerful coiling motion. Your hands and forearms should load automatically. Best news of all as a lefty/ - you can fire both hand together - as Mr. Hogan said - “I wish I had TWO right hands” So Load your left shoulder fully and release the club using both hands as strongly as you dare. I’m sure this will help, Kind regards, Luther.

I'm having a hard time agreeing here, I'm right handed tennis, scissors, pebble skipping....but playing cricket i could never hit a six unless i batted left handed, i would generate so much more raw power at the cost of a little control. I sometimes grab a club and practice swinging as a left hander and it feels so natural , powerful and steady yet i can't skip a pebble with my left hand with any real power ..how do you explain this??? my thoughts are that the lead shoulder muscles generate all the power?? As my right shoulder is stronger this would make sense as to how i can hit a six boundary batting left handed...your thoughts please..

I am naturally right handed, play tennis, badminton, darts, snooker, shoot right handed with a master right eye. Golf and cricket I play left handed (bowl right handed) and have always felt more comfortable with my dominant hand at the top of the grip. My analogy/question would be;Which is more powerful in racket sports,a forehand or backhand stroke? For me it has always been the backhand where the right side of the body coils against the muscles of the torso and release to add mass behind the shot. That transfers into the right side coiling against the left side in a lefty golf swing with the strong hand initiating 'pulling the rope' at the start of the downswing. Bob Charles is also right handed, managed the game slightly better than me! Enjoying your uploads very much,Alex Hay was always the No.1 commentator on BBC,his insights were on point and always so much more relevant because of his work coaching top players, sadly underrated.

Hi Chris - I take your points. For me it’s the need not just to impart mass through the grip but dexterity also. I can skip a rock across a pond with my right hand on the forehand - I’m pretty pathetic trying to spin it on the backhand of my left hand. As I said elsewhere - it’s a 95% rule - the proof is in the speed which is easily measurable- Luth.

Right On, Mr Franklin. If you want to check out which hand you should use, think of the flicky wrist backhand you play at ping-pong. Get it right, and it goes like fury, with almost no effort. Try to generate that sort of speed on a forehand, and you'll probably fail, and definitely be worn out in a few minutes of trying. Then go and practice a few one-handed, straight-arm, backhand golf shots, with your Dominant hand. For most, that will mean you'll need to find a lefty club. Start with no ball, get the feel of sweeping the grass, and also the feel of the backhand ping-pong shot. As you build confidence, you will need to build power, and you can do that by curling the wrist (not the elbow) as the backswing comes up. Very easy to get full 90deg angle of club to arm, with no strain on wrist. The smooth uncurling of the wrist allows very easy timing of the strike so that the clubhead slightly trails the wrist at impact point with the wrist hinge square to the target. You will also find that you balance correctly, and don't sway, all quite naturally. Begin with foam balls, to cut both expense and walking time. If you have not got the hint at that stage, then you definitely need to go back to the same old same old, and resign yourself to never improving. If you persist, you will find a smooth, effortless, non-injurious and powerful swing. Then, and only then, start to add the trailing hand; thumb and forefinger will be enough to start. If you get this far, you will be addicted and find the rest of the story for yourself. Hint: watch Moe Norman's waggle, before each and every stroke, then do that with the lead hand. The miracle of golf is that some highly talented individuals manage to get quite good at it, even though they could possibly be so much better. The saddest thing to see is the mule-headed adherence to "traditional" motions and rituals that are passed off as the "best" way. This head-in-the-sand attitude, where anything and anyone who is different is laughed at, and hounded, even by people who can't actually do as well, is a great disservice to the game. People like Snead, Moe Norman, De Chambeau, and piles of others are ridiculed, and their accomplishments dismissed as freakish flukes. Such a waste of potential for the game. Why not examine success forensically, and learn ? There are reasons why most golfers never improve, and many of those reasons have to do with players and teachers being terrified to think outside the box, much less actually to try something different. And the knockers and scoffers who reinforce their own insecurities by ridiculing anyone who does have a go. I believe if you (like myself) are not playing in single figure handicaps, you clearly, definitely, need to be trying lots of things, and don't stop trying until you do improve. Or you are just kidding yourself. Practising the same old failed mediocrity will just lead to more of exactly that. If that's what you want, good for you. Have a go !

Also i skate with my left foot forward…. the thing is like you said left handers are good at adapting to a right handed world and i had a baseball glove on my left hand before i was even 2 years old. my brother taught me to skate and he had his left forward, and the same goes for golf. i was taught from an early age to stand at this side. always had slicing issues. so heres the question. I just recently picked up the game again. and im noticing that my grip and arm dexterity are swapped, reversed if you will. my grip is extremely weak. when i take my downswing i use both hands but the dominant driving force is my right hand… When i try and move my grip i lose the club. try to use more of my left arm in the swing and i have MASSIVE contact issues. is that correct? i mean im hitting my 7 iron a measly 110-120 and im a 23 year old 6’4 guy. i can clobber a baseball and throw a football ober half a field length but my clubs have no power. it feels like there should be power coming from my left arm that i simply just dont have.Today i saw a left handed golfer. he was facing me on the range. im looking at him and noticing our hand and arm placement is identical (other than which hand is on top.) it looks like other than the way im facing im set up like a left handed golfer. Should i switch?

Hi Andrew - I did call it my 99% rule. Lefty’s are very adept at living in a right handed world. Is it possible that your fine motor skills are in your right hand making you a right handed pebble skimmer and dart thrower. Batting, writing and swinging are not as active - batting and golf swing are two handed activities. Writing is not a highly active, quick activity. I would point out that if 10 new pupils come for a lesson with left handed clubs - 4 out of ten would say “ it’s a funny thing but I do everything right handed except cricket and golf.” It can take a while to find a persons best hand - I give the pupil all the choices and do my best to let them ascertain wether they are righty’s or lefty’s. This is very much an “ art”, rather than a “ science”. Thanks for your feedback and interest - I hope you are enjoying the videos. Kind regards, Luth.

Hi Gordon - thank you for your question. For right handed players I teach them to ignite the backswing via the left shoulder. If your grip and posture are sound the left shoulder creates 15 factors in the backswing - that leaves you free to think about just one thing and let the 15 elements take care of themselves. The 15 factors created by left shoulder are: 1 Swing Plane 2 Swing Path 3 Club-head Arc 4. Shoulder Coil & Twist 5 Torso Coil 6 Hip Coil 7 Leg Load 8 Weight Shift 9 Arm lift and coil 10 Forearm Rotation 11 Wrist Hinge 12 Length of Backswing 13 Pace of backswing 14 Tempo 15 Balance. So, which hand ignites is the responsibility of your shoulder coil - that’s just ONE backswing thought and 15 things for free. Too much unnecessary junk science here. *Play golf with whichever hand you are naturally comfortable with.* There are many right-handed dominant people who play hockey shooting left and/or bat left in baseball because they prefer their dominant right hand to be steering the top of the hockey stick or baseball/cricket bat. There are also many left-handed dominant people who are precisely the same in reverse in both hockey, baseball/cricket and golf, and shoot right-handed in those sports. There are also naturally left-handed dominant people like Bubba Watson who shoot left in golf, and everything else. I've also played golf with people who actually shoot left in hockey, but then turn around and play golf right-handed. Again, *play golf with whichever hand you are naturally comfortable with!* There is no gospel rule dictating which way one should shoot in golf.

right handed people pick up a tennis racket with their right hand on the butt end. They then add the left hand lower down to play a "double handed backhand". All of them. Given golf is a backhand sport, and the natural way for a RH player is to grab it at the butt with the right hand, it's fairly clear that most right handers should use LH clubs. Children are right, naturally. And why wouldn't you use your most powerful arm to provide the bulk of the power in the swing? Or are we just unthinking slaves of habit and convention?? Just asking....

  • @lutherblacklockgolfcom

Hi John - the Golf Swing is not a "Backhand" sport - assuming you are right handed, try spinning a pebble with your right hand as you would on a forehand. Now try spinning a pebble left handed on the "backhand". No contest - the club is an extension of your dominant hand. Talented players can use a "Backhand" image to stabilise the club through impact - its a disaster to teach less gifted players that golf is a "Backhand" action. Most guys down the range lose distance and accuracy by discouraging their stronger hand. Kids often pick up a club "cack handed" and Mum and Dad mistakenly think they are a lefty. I get kids to pick up a ball and throw it - they pick up the ball and throw it, I dont hand them a ball. The hand they choose is the one that determines which is their more creative, lead hand. BUT !! like any "Rule" there are exceptions - Leftys live in a right handed world and have no choice but to ask more of their weaker side - Guitars, Scissors, Hockey sticks, Cheque books etc. This makes them appear ambidextrous and harder to determine which is their dominant hand - for me, the pebble spinning hand is a 90% rule. John, I hope this is helpful, Kind regards, Luther.

@@lutherblacklockgolfcom "The golf swing is not a Backhand sport" that statement is completely based on opinions, nothing factual! Your test "spinning a pebble" does not support your argument "the club is an extension of your dominant hand", which I assume for you is the trail hand. For right-handed golfers, the lead arm/hand (left hand) is dominant due to it having the most dominant position on the club, and at set up, your lead arm forms more of a straight line to the club shaft from the top of your left shoulder down to the clubface. The trail hand is at a 90-degree angle. Thus the reason the glove is worn on the lead hand. All the tour Pros I have listened to and seen, all control the clubface with the lead hand, which is, in fact, the dominant hand (Left hand for right-handed golfers). Golf is not a " do what feels more comfortable" sport. We measure ourselves by what the pros do and the goal is to score low. Why would you want to modify the info to accomplish nothing at the end of the day? Think of this, Phil Mickelson is right-hand, but why does he play with left-handed clubs? Go find some videos of his swing, what you will find will spark some thoughts, I hope...

@@Ju_Ju7891 Hi Julio - about 20 miles away from me is the Ashridge Golf Club. Back in the 1930’s their Professional was the great golfer Henry Cotton, 3 times Open Champion. He was a keen rose gardener and he spiked his left thumb badly, before the days of antibiotics, the wound went septic. When the thumb pad eventually healed the fleshy pad was severely depleted. To protect the left thumb pad Mr. Cotton chose to wear a driving glove. Because he was Open Champion everyone copied / if he had spiked his right thumb pad we’d all be wearing one glove on the right hand. Helps to know your history .

@@lutherblacklockgolfcom which answers nothing. So put the glove on the trail hand, at the end of the day you can't explain why the trail hand in the swing dominates? And throwing a pebble doesn't cut it! Again why are the pros not doing what you are preaching here my friend. I asked you to tell me why Phil Mickelson swings with his dominant right hand as lead with left-handed clubs? What you are doing, is promoting bad swing thoughts.

@@Ju_Ju7891 Hi Julio, I have been a PGA Professional since 1973. I was privileged in 2007 to be a Master Professional- of which there are only 40. For 10 years I was Head Coach of the Welsh Golfing Union National Boys Team. I’m also coach to the oldest National Amateur Champion in the history of the game. I have made my archive of over 400 video lessons for free on KZread. Please enjoy them - sadly I am unable to continue a dialogue. I wish you well and I hope you enjoy golf as a great game, not a crusade.
