Unbelievable that you never heard of Phil before... He was HUGE in the 80s and 90s! In fact, there are only three artists in music history that sold well over 150 million singles both as a solo artist and also together with a band: Paul McCartney (The Beatles), Michael Jackson (Jackson Five) and Phil Collins (Genesis)

In fact, Phil Collins is one of the greatest Rock drummers ever. He is just not mentioned very often, because he is also a great singer and front-man and he gets enough credit for that alone, so people forget about his awesome drumming performances with Genesis, back in the 70's.

SO true. Because the drummer sits at the back, he (or she) is easily overlooked. Collins brought clever, musical and dramatic drumming to all of his work. Subtle and sublime. Under appreciated. One of the world's best.

Cool fact about Collins: after Gabriel left Genesis, Genesis were having lead singer tryouts and during the tryouts, Phil would sing a portion of the tryout songs but nobody could sing it as well as Phil, so Genesis moved Phil to lead singer full-time and instead signed a new drummer to fill his spot.

Phil was one of the very best prog drummers and in my top 5 of drummers who influenced my playing. In the 80s, he was everywhere, with Genesis, as a solo artist and as a guest on others' songs. The signature "bark" of that Gretsch concert tom kit was unmistakable. You always knew when Phil was playing on a track.

This song was written as an "ode" to the guy who cheated with his first wife. He had given it thought to present it to his wife during the divorce. You can see he still can channel the hurt to this specific day. ... and it gives new meaning, knowing this, to the "uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh" rift... he saw it. In a later interview he said it wasn't anything specific, just going through the divorce. HOWEVER, it his first public performance of it, he has a paint can on the speaker, and the guy was an interior decorator. LOL Genesis band members disagree with the interview, said it was personal. I think he just has a lot of class and was done dissing people during the interview. This was on his farewell tour, in Paris, there were 80,000 of us there.

Phill Collins, played drums for Genesis Progressive rock band all his life, and he was back vocals too, when Peter Gabriel left the band , Phill take control and he sang on live and studio performances, playing drumms too, theres always a second drummer on live shows, Chesther Thompson and another great drummer Bill Bruford from Yes progressive rock band. He´s top ten drummer on the 70´s, sharing scene with Carl Palmer (ELP), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Ian Paice ( Deep Purple), Biil Bruford (Yes) , Alan White ( Yes), among other awesome drummers of this golden period of music.

Emma, This is my first time on your channel. You lady have selected a classical song performed by a master. Phil is darn GOOD. I feel it is important to note that it looks like Phil is just out for a walk. Yet he arrives at the drum kit at just the right time for his short solo. I believe it is safe to say Phil is a master of his craft!!! This video is so wonderful and well done to be live.

If you like classical music you should consider Genesis. While a prog rock band, their music is orchestral and beautifully arranged without loosing the surprise and drama. Special works of art. (1970s especially) Peter Gabriel's voice is special and meshes incredibly well with Phil's.....though they do few classic duets. Mostly harmony and ghosting the lyrics. Collins drums on early Genesis. Magic.
