This scene is terrifying. This is 2 battled hardened detectives who have just seen the most horrifying proof of evil in the world. And they now realize they are the only 2 who could do something about it. Such a perfect performance by 2 masters of the craft

I think we all have our dark sides but some people can mantain control (because somebody like parents, friends, teaches how to with education, religion, or good beliefs, love and respect, etc and this are the law abading citizens) better than others. American horror story doesn't go for realism. So if realism is the only thing that scares you, it's not gonna scare you

One of the most powerful & horrifying scenes of S1. The fact that it gives you a glimpse of the tape, just snippets, and let's you imagine what happened is just repulsive. You actually feel how Rust & Cole feel. Absolutely GENIUS filmmaking. I rate this with the Sopranos & The Wire at this stage.

What I loved most about this scene was Marty absolutely hated and distrusted Rust at this point and didn't want anything to do with him but didn't hesitate to jump on board to help once he saw this tape. "What can I do to help?" True detective.

You know, I actually don't think Marty hated Rust at that point. He is a smart man and deep down he perfectly realized that he himself was the reason for his family downfall, not Rust's one-time sex with his wife. Moreover, Maggie admitted to Marty it was her idea so that she could get out of the rotten relationship. So while initially Marty was indeed furious at Rust, I'm inclined to think as the time passed, and Marty settled down, his hatred for Rust just became a front hiding a much deeper feeling - hatred for himself for ruining his life and his marriage.

The thing I love most about this scene and Harrelson’s performance here is that he realises this is partly his fault. He killed Reggie Ledoux before Rust had an opportunity to interrogate him and given Rust’s reputation for getting suspects to talk he could’ve given them the information they needed to arrest these sick animals before they managed to do this. The writing of this series is up there with some of the finest ever produced.

Here's the thing about what's on the tape. Marty's reaction just shows you that some REALLY bad shit went down. The imagination of the audience is a far greater and more dangerous tool rather than actually show what is on the tape.

+Kurt Ohrenberger yeah and when rust said(without blinking) he watched the whole thing.. it revealed even more about him. it's chilling in a way. because rust is a man who can stare at the worst kind of evil unflinchingly.. it's almost superhuman. it takes a kind of abnormal human to be able to do that, and I think in many ways that's why he is shunned. Rust could possibly be a kind of savant. and marty in many ways is a coward who can't face it. but at the end of the day they get the job done together. it's a very interesting relationship

I've seen this scene so many times, including when it originally aired in the show, but maybe this is the first time it was clear enough to see the girl in the tape was visibly crying and scared. I hadn't seen that before and it makes the scene that much more chilling and disturbing.

Yes but Rust knew Marty has what it takes to handle it. Remember why Marty retired from the force to begin with? Someone put a baby in a microwave. People forget the horrific things cops see on a daily basis.

Woody deserves an Oscar for this scene. The pain and revulsion on his face...You don't even see what's happening in the video and my stomach still churns every time I watch this scene. As said before, the way Rust hands him the flask and turns away is a stroke of genius too. An amazing TV show and incredible acting throughout by Woody and Matt.

Marty was clearly watching the Game of Thrones finale. I reacted the same way.

I’ll never forget watching this with roommates years ago. When Rust says the line “I won’t avert my eyes, not again” one of roommates actually broke down in tears. I will never forget this show

I think it's also worth pointing out, Marty's reaction is so visceral not only because of the content in the video, but also it hits him that, truly, the case is unfinished. And that in the years it's been "closed", these crimes have been happening time and time again.

The double meaning of “Nobody should have this” just ads so much more to it. Hands down best series ever made.

I'm rarely taken aback by things happening in a film or televison. Explosions? Sure. Decaptations? No problem. But the one thing that really freaks me out is religious cults. And this has to be one of the most unsettling things I have ever seen on screen. The fact that you don't get to actually see what happens on the tape, just short glimpses and leaving the rest up for imagination...I feel sick just thinking about it. And the grainy, old-school picture quality just adds to the realism. I need to go watch SpongeBob now.

There is a saying for that, one word, I can't recall what it is but in the glory days of horror this was the case, the director would never explain why someone would do something like this because the brain would come up with something far more terrifying.

Any other seasons of this show have an almost impossible bar to try and reach. This is one of if not the best season of television ever filmed.

When Marty first meets up with Rust again he tells him how he looks like shit. "Time has his way with us all. Seems you pissed him off. " "You don't look particularly healthy, the way you're talking. Your eyes looks kinda brittle, Rust." I don't think it was time or alcohol that did that to Rust. It was that tape. I don't think even Rust, with his nihilism and low opinion of humanity as a whole could have ever imagined something as horrible as what he saw on that tape. The fact that he has to stand as far away from it as possible and look at a wall while it's playing and the way he says, "Nobody should have this," tells you just how deeply it's damaged him.

I think this scene is as strong as ''The Box'' scene in Se7en, we don't really get to see what's happening or what's in there, but we kinda already knew before them

Season 1 is proof, to me at least, that Lovecraft stories and even the Yellow King book, from Robert Chambers, should become a Netflix tv series. There is much to be explored in that kind of horror.

How do you create a concept of something so truly macabre that it makes people lose their grasp on reality. The cosmic horror in this show was extremely simple and bare bone. The show leaned much more towards southern gothic horror and the cosmic stuff was implemented more as spice to bring out the restless and even somewhat unreliable side of Rust as a character. Just like from Martin's point of view, our knowledge of his visions of insanity made the possibility of his partaking in the crimes, even if just little, more plausible.

@@joonasseppala1413 I think it'd be difficult to implement when I really think about it tbh, but it would pay off if done well. You'd have to rely upon a lot of suspense, and CGI at certain points, but not show the actual alien/monster fully if at all. The focus would be the monster's effect on people. The protagonist is usually an investigator of sorts, whether they're a journalist, a scientist, a detective, or writing a book. They start off as rational people, perhaps the most rational characters in the town/village they're at looking with a snobbish perspective at the locals superstitious beliefs. There would have to be an alien-like feel to the movie which captures how foreign the place is to the protagonist, how out of their depth they feel and how trapped they might feel. Dream sequences too as many of Lovecraft's work involves dreams as being important to the plot. You'd also need to have great acting from the people turned crazy, some who might have joined a cult who have completely lost their minds and look a bit like zombies. The movie would need to have nihilistic theme to it like in True Detective. In Lovecraft's works you often have the protagonist who is rational but his mental state degrades over time as he's exposed to more questionable scenarios throughout and tries to rationalise it in his head. A skilled actor would be needed to portray this. You also would need a Rust-type character trying to warn the main protagonist, who doesn't take his advice all that seriously until near the end when it's too late. I certainly reckon a Lovecraft movie could be put together excellently.

@@TheSm1thers I would totally support the idea of using Lovecraft as a source for world-building. You kind of hit the nail on the coffin with the monster: the execution of releasing the tension via the alien/great ones should be left out and only implied towards. Now back on the world-building I think Damon Lindelof could be a writer who I believe to have the capabilities of pulling something like this off. One great example would be The Leftovers (TV-series). In case you haven't seen it I would describe its world as uncanny. The people are there but something under the surface just rubs you the wrong way. Adults are trying to keep it together and adolescents are up to their shenanigans, and yet, all their behaviour comes across as rushed, hectic and uncontrollable. Never during the show are you explicitly told why the people are the way they are but you can deduct all that yourself through introspection and that to me was a huge part in making the experience more intimate and personal. Also, I think Lindelof's style of intentionally leaving out crucial information in a meticulous manner (à la Watchmen) would help with building suspense like you mentioned.

My only wish for his series is that it had maintained the implications of cosmicism into the second half of the season. The first third of True Detective is the best Lovecraftian horror ever put on camera.

Knowing that Marty had raised 2 little girls and reacted like that, makes me wonder how Rust reacted when he saw that.

The plot of the show is good, but what makes the show a masterpiece is is the acting of Woody Harrelson and, i can't stress this enaught: Matthew McConaughey! The guy can really act. I just don't know why he chose so many shitty stuff in the past...

This show crushes any season of Breaking Bad. BB has longevity....but that longevity exposes a story line to cracks in it's armor. It could happen here too...but for now....THIS IS THE SHIT!!!!

Marty's reacation is pretty much me watching Season 4

The music doesn't get enough praise. The somber tone and the unrelenting rhythm that intensifies even after Marty turned of the tape, telling that the scene went on anyway and got worse - it's just bone-chilling and horrifying. Perfect television right here.

The music reminds me of Sinister from 2012. The eerie nature of the music is so similar, coupled with the out of focus, grainy film.

This is how I reacted when I watched the first episode and saw what True Detective Night Country was going to be like.

Love this show.. So eerie and horrifying without the shock value. Anyone can create a gore fest to bother the viewers but it takes talent to show nothing and still create that feeling of sheer horror. Such a good show and yes, Matt and Woody were stupendous.

I think what makes this scene amazing it that it shows why Rust was acting so different during his interview in the first five episodes. He already watched that tape, and it broke him. It also explains why he needed to drink so bad, besides making his statements inadmissable.

Woody is seriously one of the most underrated dramatic actors ever to exist. Everyone wants to hire him for comedic purposes. Sad

This season is god tier. I don’t think we’ll ever get anything like this ever again... mostly because the powers that be probably don’t want to be outed like this again.

Not only is Rust standing towards the door brilliant in showing the madness of the tape, but also the fact that all he is looking at is the Tuttle cult spiral. Stuck in the that same loop that he wishes to bind shut. Fantastic stuff

Same symbol that's on police department city/state badge logos all over the country right NOW.. in real life. (Yes this is an "insider show"). The more you know.

The fact that you can't clearly see what's in the tape makes the scene so much more powerful. Only seeing two hardened and jaded men reacting that way makes you imagine what kind of unspeakable horror is going on, and your imagination cannot be matched by anything a screenwriter could come up with.

'You shouldn't have that.' '..nobody should have this.' The theme of the show summed up in two lines. A modern classic.

Ugh when you can see the girl was crying the whole time, she knew what was happening. Absolutely horrifying

The fact this sort of shit goes on in our world is the most frightening part

Fucked up part is there are people in power still doing this shit for real. EDIT: That low key music actually hurts.

I cannot express in words the intensity, masterful writing and acting this show produced. I have to give it up to both woody and Mathew. Amazing actors.

This scene will never leave me. These guys fucking kill this role.

The acting here is what gets all of the praise- and rightfully so; both performances are so nuanced and lifelike that they can’t help but jump right out at you. However, this scene is also a wonderful example of how vital an asset scoring is in filmmaking, too. The subtle bass note that plays when Marty looks at the photos sets the tone, and then the harrowing, pulse-raising piece that accompanies Marty watching the videotape and finally having the horrible truth revealed to him are both picture-perfect for the moment. Subtle additions like these are the difference between good filmmaking and great filmmaking.

This moment. Marty watches the tape and immediately is in. The boys are back.

This scene tops all the horror movies I've watched. Sent a deep shiver down my spine the first time I saw this scene.

The 1st time I watched this episode, that scene made my eyes well up. I was a 35 year old man and I can't really remember a TV show or movie ever choking me up before, but Marty's reaction almost made me "ugly cry". The end of Remember The Titans hit me in the feels back when I was 17 and I watched it at the movie theater, with my gf sobbing like a child. But the True Detective Storage Locker scene is my kryptonite.

I like that Marty is at first just horrified, but the reality of the situation sinks in at 2:18 and then he gets angry because he realizes that he has some culpability.

Seeing that tape would've turned me into The Punisher

I love how the tape is treated in this scene. The gloves have a double purpose. They keep finger prints off the tape and the video is so repulsive, so radioactive and evil that it cant be touched without infecting the holder. It is a cursed item.

@@el34glo59 Nah this fits in well with Lovecraft and the symbolism of the show. In Lovecraft, there are objects that mortals shouldn't touch or see. If they do the madness overwhelms them. This tape can be viewed as one of those objects.

Great great season, finally watched it. These two did a great job!

The whole dynamic in this scene is incredible. A man who lives in the abyss inviting another to come down with him.

Over the decades I've watched many movies and TV shows but in my opinion I think nothing beats True Detective season 1

This is probably one of the best shows I’ve ever ever seen in my life

Have to love the cinematography at 1:35. Rust literally looking like he is being sucked into a spiral which is a metaphor for how this case has consumed his entire life while Marty is being horrified by the tape. The zenith of American horror imo

Can only echo what many have said in the comments already; this is just so disturbing and never fails to unsettle me whenever I watch this scene/the show.

The on screen chemistry between these two was A1 the whole season. Fantastic stuff

+dragonsofliberty sociopaths have a knack for identifying eachother as they themselves fake most of their interactions and are dead inside, thus they are able to recognize each other. There are a massive amount of cases, not to mention all of the ones I've read about first hand in recent news of families, groups or partnerships or pedophiles, rapists and murderers who work together for their own sick fetish.

Most compelling, entertaining television EVER!!! That fact it's based on true events makes it hard 2 sleep at night sometimes though.

This series is an awesome force of nature Brilliantly acted, plotted, scripted and shot

the first season of true detective took me by a complete surprise. i expected much from such a cast, and still, my expectations were completely annihilated by this masterpiece. i still have goosebumps seeing scenes from this season, with an intense feeling of mysticism and fear of the unknown.

Imagine watching this, and THEN season 4...and considering them even remotely of the same quality. I want season 5 to investigate how people could possibly do the mental gymnastics to justify the debacle that was Night Country.

This was such an amazing first season. Nothing has come close IMO since.

I love how Marty is clearly hating every second of having to be here, learning this knowledge, but knows that Rust is right and they're the only ones who can at least TRY to bring these sick monsters to justice.

@@dodo-sf9dx The tape was a ritual sacrifice of kid. It's ancient and primitive way of selling your souls to dark force for power. They raped her, killed her and ate her flesh /blood as the blood of sacrificed kids are considered blessed by maniacs. So I think that exactly what happened in there.

Sometimes I have to remind myself this is a TV show because the acting and directing is so unbelievably real.

These things happen in real life. In my country two children were tortured, s... abused and killed in the most horrendous way as sacrifices. So, it's not just a tv show.

I love both marty and Steve's reaction to the tape. And rust watched all of it damn

I watch this once a year, there are very few shows I do that for, but this most certainly is one.

I was talking to a friend about how watching this season made me feel filthy afterward, like I needed a shower. I think it's especially true in this scene.
