True Detective Night Country is Disappointing

A review/video essay going into why True Detective Night Country/Season 4 is so disappointing and how it's inferior to the earlier seasons. Going into the Tone, narrative/plot quality, and the weird emphasis on this season being more of a character drama. Along with that drama still not being good.

That makes a lot of sense. I was just talking with a friend about it and neither of us could believe they labeled it True Detective when it was so wildly different from the Pizzolatto seasons. The fact they just slapped it on just for marketing has been a huge backfire, it raised expectations for everyone lol

The murder case lasted about 2 weeks (in universe). This murder was the biggest police case to happen to this town. Peter had to pull doubles for two weeks and his wife kicks him out because of this?!?!? Your husband is a freaking DETECTIVE lady. 6 dead scientists and you couldn't give him a break for two weeks. She acts like he was on his 4 deployment and his son is growing up without him. Terrible characters. All the women on that show are insufferable and terribly written. And Peter needed to grow a pair

I felt like the writing and directing were projecting the creator's feelings towards masculinity in shows like True Detective. However, season 1 has masculine characters with flawed and warped perceptions and is clearly showcasing these are not bad men, but they are not good either. They're human and dealing with some evil stuff. I also hate how Peter's wife is automatically annoyed with him working so much. In contrast, in season 1, Maggie is worried about Marty working all the time and the gruesomeness of the case. That's why when it's revealed he's cheating on her, I have the utmost sympathy for her and none for Marty, even when she cheats on him with Rust.

Good grief, I'm a girl and every show or movie that desperately tries to pander to the crowd who want "female empowerment" just never fails to make me cringe. There were far more better pieces of media that actually do showcase proper female empowerment back then when they weren't actually trying. There still is now, but they often get overshadowed by garbage shows like this. Just make a normal show for pete sake. Make a strong badass whatever character who just happens to be a woman than a character whose entirely personality is centered around being a strong badass whatever woman.

Jodie Foster was also just badly miscast. There are many other things she's good in, but she always exudes trepidation and unease. That's why she was so good in Silence of the Lambs, surrounded as she was by psychos, perverts, and a cannibal; she ought to have been unnerved, and looked it. By contrast, she cannot pull off this swaggering, domineering boss, backslapping, quipping, stomping around drunkenly off the job hooking up with men who somehow cannot resist her but just want to know 'where all of this is going'...one cannot quite suspend disbelief.

The daughter doesn’t seem to understand that ANYONE who hit a cop in the head with a brick would be arrested. Instead she and the cop that arrested her are surprised she actually has to face consequences for her actions. NO ONE points out that getting preferential treatment because you’re a cop’s kid is a form of privilege the other natives don’t have, or that just because you believe you are “fighting for what’s right” doesn’t mean everything you do is ok. If her mom is this ridiculous, over-the-top racist, then why did she get with her father? The young cop’s wife only exists to be a wet blanket. She has nothing to do in the show but complain.

I think the most frustrating thing about this season is that the horror in it is actually really good, especially in the first few episodes. It was such a waste to throw away all the supernatural elements and just have the reveal be a rogue group of aunties slaughtering the scientists. And the way they wrote the scientists as these inhuman murderers at the end was clearly motivated by misandry, as all the villains of the show turned out to be men (except the one good guy who was meek and submissive and always did as he was told), and all the women of the story were either innocent victims or vengeful heroes. It was a show that tried to be a commentary on way too many hot-button social issues, and none of them were integrated well. It tried to be a story about svicide, about race relations, about indigenous land rights, about environmentalism, about sexism, about depression, yadda yadda yadda. Pick a lane and stick to it! This was actually my introduction to the True Detective franchise, and although I enjoyed the season well enough until the ending, I'm going back and watching season 1 for the first time and yeah, it's amazing how stark the contrast is in quality.

Here is my gripe with the positive reviews of the season: I watch the series because I like detective mysteries. In interviews and articles for the season, the main focus and topic have been female leads, inclusion, etc., so when viewers bring up any criticism of the actual mystery itself, they're derided as hating those things because, for whatever reason, the narrative is that those things cannot be separated. It's pretty frustrating and insane, and it is just causing more pushback from critical viewers.

I thought the last two episodes were really, really, really disappointing and poorly written(acted well though at least). I loved (LOVED) episodes 1 and 2, but already at 3 I started to have concerns. The 6 episodes run wasn't enough clearly. Too many plot holes or things they never came back to: 1- What about all the elk in the very first scene of episode 1 that leapt off the cliff? 2- Why put the spiral, the Tuttle family, Travis Cohle, what's inside Clarks trailer (the bones and stuff) and all the other season 1 references and do nothing with them? If you take out everything of the season, it wouldn't change anything since they didn't add none. I thought it was a cheap device to make people guess and come back every week. 3- The way Annie dies in the finale versus what they saw on her cell phone was completely different. 4- They never came back on the ending of episode 4 when Danvers found Navarro sitting on the floor, in a transe, with her ears bleeding. 5- They never came back to Navarro's vision of the dead soldier. 6- Why Rose is so ok with dropping bodies? lol 7- So I guess Navarro finally ends her life and come back as a ghost? The list goes on as I have many more issues with the season. They spent way too much time opening storylines, on mysteries (was it all supernatural or realistic) without ever really closing them and most of the characters, albeit well acted, were all only on the surface. We never got to really know them that well since we only got a general idea about who they were. And since they spent so much time on the ''horror'' aspect, in the end, there was nothing supernatural about it really so there's no rewatchability, in the sense that since we know the magic trick and it was a realistic one, the horror/tension scenes won't work well cause we know. I'll probably never watch it again.

Missed opportunities… They should have leaned into the supernatural/horror aspect more or simply stuck with a similar storyline to S1 (girls being murdered by shadowy figures). Rose and Qavik were wasted characters… was expecting more from at least one of them. If Qavik had killed Annie that would have been a shocker… they could have even made Navarro’s sister (who worked for Qavik in the bar) find out somehow and had Qavik kill her too… would have added some major tension for the finale. For Rose… would have been nice if she turned out not to be a real person… a spirit of the Night Country. All in all I didn’t hate it… but I don’t think they’ll ever be able to make a TD that’s on the level of S1. Reminds me a lot of Westworld in that way. Set the bar way too high with the first season and just couldn’t match it after that.

I 100% agree. I wrote my own criticisms just above yours if you want to read them, but overall yeah...so many missed opportunities. ''They should have leaned into the supernatural/horror aspect more or simply stuck with a similar storyline to S1 (girls being murdered by shadowy figures)'' That's exactly what I said to my gf after we watched it. Since, at the end of the day, nothing was really supernatural per se (and some stuff are just up for interpretation), re-watching the season won't be compelling again because all those ''supernatural'' scenes or segments were not ''real''. So, for example, seeing a shadowy form running quickly from left to right on the screen, knowing now that it's only Clark running to hide himself, won't be scary at all because your brain knows that it's not supernatural. I could go on, like you said, they should've leaned hard on the supernatural or realism. Not both equally cause it never works.
