True Detective (2014) | Making of a MASTERPIECE | Nic Pizzolatto

The first season of True Detective, an American anthology crime drama television series created by Nic Pizzolatto, premiered on January 12, 2014, on the premium cable network HBO. The principal cast consisted of Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Tory Kittles. The season had eight episodes, and its initial airing concluded on March 9, 2014. As an anthology, each True Detective season has its own self-contained story, following a disparate set of characters in various settings.
Constructed as a nonlinear narrative, season one focuses on Louisiana State Police homicide detectives Rustin "Rust" Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin "Marty" Hart (Harrelson), who investigated the murder of prostitute Dora Lange in 1995. Seventeen years later, they must revisit the investigation, along with several other unsolved crimes. During this time, Hart's infidelity threatens his marriage to Maggie (Monaghan), and Cohle struggles to cope with his troubled past. True Detective's first season explores themes of philosophical pessimism, masculinity, and Christianity; critics have analyzed the show's portrayal of women, its auteurist sensibility, and the influence of comics and weird horror fiction on its narrative.
Pizzolatto initially conceived True Detective as a novel, but felt it was more suitable for television. The episodes, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, were filmed in Louisiana over a three-month period. The series received positive reviews from critics and was cited as one of the strongest dramas of the 2014 television season. It was a candidate for numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Drama Series and a Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film, and won several other honors for writing, cinematography, direction, and acting.

Everybody loves Rust, but it’s Marty who makes the show work. He grounds the whole thing. He has normal problems. Struggles with fidelity, disappointment, being a father, anger. Rust is a nihilistic weirdo. But without Marty, it would be really hard to take him seriously. I think Woody Harrelson is hugely underrated for his work on this show.

Exactly, the only reason either character is so effective is because they reflect off of each other. Marty would just be a cheating asshole without Rust to poke at him and peel back Marty's many layers of superficiality. Rust would just be a nihilistic, broken man who takes himself too seriously without Marty to tell him to shut the fuck up and to challenge his innate self hatred. They are an absolute perfect duo acted by two masters.

Both are critical. Marty grounds the show as you say, though Marty alone makes this pedantic kinda bad cop show, where he purposely blinds himself to the landscape. Cole alone, well Marty tells him repeatedly what he’s like, and the ‘faded psychopaths memory’ banter would get old fast. Imagine Martin Sheens character in Apocalypse Now, or Brando’s Kurtz talking w no stops for hours about “the horror”. Thanks, no, Cole’s bond w Marty and Marty’s family allows him to be of interest again and thus drive the investigation story.

Martys problems are only normal from your pov. Are Martys action those of a ration man? I'd argue his actions are narsicistic and he has no more faith than Cole. Cole is also a father, disapointied and angry at losing his kid . Marty always denys his nature, Cole seems to accept it. Both men are much different in 2012. Perhaps its age that grounds a man in realism, though some never accept who they are at any age. Harrelson is a gehius actor, theres no doubt, that point is unrelated mto your arguement.

The craziest thing about that amazing single tale scene, they really shot it in the projects, basically all of the "extras" were people who lived there and not actors, and Pizzolato/Fukunaga were sweating bullets the entire time praying things wouldn't go completely off the rails with so little actual control over the scene.

There can’t be any sequel or prequel of an audience listening to Rust drone on for hours and about the futility of existence, no matter how brilliantly done. And almost 10 years and at least 7-8 rewatches later, it’s just as fascinating to me, and I pick up something new each time. For my money, there will never be a better single season of any series. Also, I grew up in Louisiana and was a Soph in high school when the Dora Lane murder would’ve occurred in 95….. and they got the setting sooooo right! ❤️ I’d get goose bumps as they were driving all over south, central, and west Louisiana, into Beaumont TX, like I was reliving those years. @@Qwickv Okay, I'll take a crack. 41, divorced (she cheated, not me), but here's what's going on there: Marty is a cheater, so he suspects everyone is, or is capable of it (he's not wrong, rare exceptions aside). He doesn't like seeing another man at his house when he isn't around, because of very I guess toxic masculine territorialism. "This is all mine" - his house, his wife, his lawn, etc. Seeing another man there makes him feel threatened and insecure, especially because he's cheating, and he knows his wife is attractive (Michelle Monaghan IS gorgeous) and kind of over his bullshit. Furthermore, he doesn't like Rust, he doesn't TRUST Rust, and he definitely doesn't want him hanging out with his wife when he's not around, for multiple reasons. He's unstable, he's dangerous, he's in slightly better shape, probably more attractive...he feels threatened by this person's presence in his house, around his wife, when he isn't around. There's also a strong element of guilt - HE should have mowed the lawn. HE should be spending time with his wife. He's not doing those things because he's out fucking about, which ALSO makes him feel guilty. Ultimately, he's unhappy with his life and looking for someone to blame in that moment, and Rust is a very convenient target, so he chooses to take issue with the kindly act of mowing his lawn. As we see, Rust has no designs on Maggie (while he DOES find her attractive, and knows Marty fucks around, it would break his moral code - which she seduces him into, for her own good reasons), he just enjoys her company and felt that mowing the lawn would be a helpful thing to do. Rust is clearly not in the wrong here, and Marty very much is, however Rust chooses to be the bigger man and walk away from the conflict, because, let's face it, he is. Excellent scene, well acted, the show is a complete masterpiece. Possibly the best single season television show ever filmed. I’m so happy to come across this! I watched Season One many times. Some of the best writing( and acting) about men. Deeply insightful and honest And Funny! Season 2 was just watchable/decent but Season 3 got better than Season 2 by a stretch…nothing, however, can match the Harrelson/ McConaughey(sp?) chemistry. Glad to hear boutSeason 4. Jodie Foster is def. capable of real greatness.. who else?

The oner through the projects when Cole has to help Ginger is still maybe the greatest sequence ever made for television. I can rewatch that sequence once a week.

They really NEED to make a sequel to this. Or maybe a prequel? It was only 8 episodes, but it was one of the finest TV shows ever to be produced. Just so good. There’s so much more these writers, producers, and cast could explore.

I just want to know how much therapy Woody and Matthew had to get after working on the show. Digging deep into the characters' psyches and internalizing, it screws with your head big time and can throw you into real life trauma and depression.

I'm once again coming late to the party, but thank you for compiling these interviews and themes/outlines for each episode. I appreciate this from having, instead, the '3 min. take', the '1.30 min. take' format, etc. There is so much to love about this series; one of which, not mentioned, were the fun connections to some rather obscure late 19th/early 20th cent. literature. Ambrose Bierce and Robert Chambers aren't widely discussed these days, altho' HP Lovecraft is better known, but none of them often thought of in context to modern detective mysteries. 'True Detective' used them to nice effect, but not in any overt manner. It was fun if you caught these, but not necessary to 'get' the great, original storytelling of its own. And, special kudos to T Bone Burnett for the remarkable score.

Nic, honestly incredible TV series to date. I don't I've seen anything like it since. Although I hold my breath every time another show comes out. There was so much going on, with fascinating conversations from Rust to Marty. The brilliant one liners, so funny! Including Marty wig in the 90s lol! I felt this was a true real life reflection of the world we live in. The attention to detail & twists & turns, the lightness & the fight against the darkness. It's explained how time is a flat circle, how there will always be children sitting in a dark room forever made me feel pure hopelessness. I fell in love with Rust, I am a pessimist, but I also know there light and the light always wins. Rust felt love from he's daughter & pops when in a coma. He finally knew there is something more out there. When he said the light is winning was a beautiful touch to the end. Nic you should be so proud of this. I think we were all so disappointed when Rust never showed up in Alska night country, to connect the two cases to bring it full circle back to Rust would have been amazing. However the spiral of the flat time, was a good thing to put in to throw people off. We need Rusty & Marty back for another season of True dective.

So disapointed in season four... Total ripoff of the John Carpenters version of "The Thing" with so much woke dogma thrown in that I could barely take the first two episodes... Which sucked for me because I love Jodie Foster So I tried to like it.. But lets face it Season 1 with McConaughey and Harrelson was really such a convergence of talent on so many levels that the Zeitgeist of it all created something really special , It's a classic that I will always watch every year or so...

I remember to this day when watching the final episode of this season in 2016. No spoiler. Watching Matthew McConaughey in that maze, I actually put my hand to my heart in a tense trance. It gripped me so much. Haven't watched anything of that calibre maybe until recently with the first season of Succession.
