Pro tip- pull the drivers side inner fender panel and everything is super accessible. No need to pull all the top end stuff.

Just saved me 500.00 on labor...great video...side note..take your seatbelt and wrap it on the inside of your steering wheel so it doesn't turn on you.

I just replaced by water pump (240,000 miles on it) and had to removed the cowling and fan. To my extreme surprise there is a lot of room when the cowling is removed! I had access to the power steering pump and the box from above with plenty space. I am tempted to replace them both since I have replaced the cowling. Great video. Still helping DYI guys like me.

The V10 is waay simpler. No need to go in through the wheel well. Lots of room from above to undo the bolts. HOWEVER...getting the Pitman Arm off the box can be a Bee-ach. I ended up taking it to a shop that had an industrial sized puller. You might need heat to do it at home. And just torque the shid out of it woth Locktight to reinstall. This is a Jesus nut. If it lets go, you're headed for the ditch or the transport coming toward you in the other lane. Other than that, real straight forward process. Thanks for the video. Always good to see it first before skinning knuckles.

01-2022 be advised that Ford used two type pressure hose ends for 1990s period of vehicles. One used 'o' rings the other uses reverse flare tubing. Because some previous purchasers did not verify the reverse flare in the reman gear box someone tried to insert the square off tubing with "O" ring into the high pressure port and destroyed the internal reverse flare male brass fitting. Now Autozone has two damaged units that must return, and I had to find another supplier for the proper unit. My van is a 1992 ford e350 cutaway rv. I am now on my way to CarQuest/Advance parts to pick up another replacement unit and hoping it will not have damaged input pressure ports. Good Luck.

You don't need to remove all the top stuff. Remove the driver side fender well and you can access everything from there.

Great video! Used it to replace my box…. The only other comment- for those that have them, a 16mm crowfoot flare makes it easy to pull the hydraulic lines without having to pull out the fender liners!

The fender liners are a 5.5 and an 8mm way easier than removing the air box and other stuff.

Excellent video! I love the down to earth backyard approach. I'm getting ready to do mine on my 06 F350 dually. I've decided to go with the redhead gear box because i know that the 05-10 gear box design had problems. Even on a replacement box, it will still have excessive play. The last truck i had was a 06 single F350. Replacement box from NAPA was hardly even noticeable. The redhead boxes are like $500 after core exchange so...i hope it works out! But all the reviews say they are well worth it.

@@piercer2 i bought one for my 1978 f250, it had a good 5 inches of slop, after replacing with a redhead there is zero slop and you can turn the wheel with one finger, I am buying another redhead steeringbox for my 2000 f250 today as mine has 4 inches of slop. i would 110% recommend a redhead box to anybody without a doubt it's an amazing product and the customer support is outstanding, I called to ask a question and they picked up right away and told me everything I wanted to know in less then 5 minutes, BUY ONE

The steering wheel can not be rotated because the clock spring (coiled wiring harness for the horn and airbag) can stretch and snap if the wheel free spins.

Great video man. Gonna throw this out there. When I do a vehicle with clock spring. I get a bungee or rope. Tie off wheel to brake pedal. Also. Especially with Ford pumps. Top off before starting. Wheels off ground turn wheel lock to lock. Purge all air out of system...! Top off again.. start vehicle turn wheel lock to lock again.. hydra press pedal few times. Shut off. Let whatever bubbles settle.. You do same procedure when you do a pump also. Alot of Ford pumps fail or whine FOREVER. if you dont do something like this.. they often fail. Or make noise.. Just my experience from working on Fords for 30yrs.. Hope it helps people..

@@alexbradley7517 to hold it in the same position it was taken off in so you don’t end up with an out of line steering wheel, which when equipped with a clock spring (airbag) needs to be centered or else you’re doing $200+ worth of damage

Worst part about it is they charge 1200 AND do a half-assed job. Almost guaranteed to be leaking in no time. That is why my hands are the only hands privileged to work on my truck

BUY A REPLACEMENT FROM REDHEAD STEERING SYSTEMS!!!! Redhead produces a refurb that is superior to even the original Ford part as they make necessary upgrades to the steering gear as a whole and test it in house. Great vid btw, thank you.

@@automotiveperformancemobil4030 It is more expensive. $375 for a unit. But you’re paying for the ONLY steering gear remanufacturer that guarantees absolutely no play. They have a year warranty. This was for my 2002 F-250 specifically. I physically went to their location in Washington because I wanted to speak with them. I saw their facility, spoke with their employees, and witnessed firsthand the way they operate. I can tell you for a fact that they are top notch and care greatly about the products they produce and the people they sell them to. I’m also an engineer and wanted to test their knowledge about their products (without being ridiculous, was just curious lol). I was quickly informed about how much in depth they got. Superior product backed by a superior company.

Do you think it would be a good idea yo flush the hydroboost system before swapping the steering box so if there is crud in the system it does get into the new box. Thanks Phil.

Awesome very detailed video I have a f250 07 turbocharged diesal I had a similar problem with the steering wheel is very hard to turn even while driving can't turn the steering wheel very stiff I replaced the power steering pump and pressure hose same problem not solved it has a hydobooster could that be the steering gear box binding up any suggestion would help?

Very informative, my problem I'm having is steering at slow speed or stopped. Very hard to turn the wheel. I replaced the steering pump and it made no difference. Makes a whining noose too. I guess I'll replace the box next and see if that fixes it.

I had a similar issue at low idle and especially when trying to maneuver while backing with the fifth wheel camper on the truck. My steering box would also leak when backing the fifth wheel. After changing the steering box, I have not experienced the issue since.

Remember these steering boxes require Atf fluid, not power steering fluid. Mercon V to be precise. Had the same issue when I first bought my truck. I put power steering fluid in it and it squealed like crazy. Another possibility is low fluid.

Not sure how prone they are to leaking. Guessing in your case low miles over 15 years had caused the seals to dry out.

How do you overall the sterling box for my 1999 Toyota hilux twin cab pickup truck.

about how long did it take to do this job? I'm about to order a Redhead gear box to try to solve my wandering steering problem at highway speeds. Already replaced all the steering linkage, ball joints and wheel bearings. even tightened the pressure needle. Kinda scary towing a 10,000lb camper and your truck has a mind of its own!

I need help, i changed my box and I’m using the nut to press the pitman arm on, and the nut is tightening but my input shaft also turns while the pitman arm stays stationary. Is my box damaged?

Do you know what size the bolts are because all 3 bolts on mine snapped and I can’t find the size

Would the steering box cause sloppiness in the steering wheel when driving? It steers like a boat. The other linkages with the front have just recently been changed but still steers sloppy.

If all the steering linkage is good, there could be slop in the steering box causing it. The nut with the slotted stud on top of the box can be used to adjust the box, but it can be tricky to do correctly.

Can you do this job jacked up to gain more room

First, don't go in through the topside, too much work. It's all accessible through the left wheel well after taking the wheel off. For me, I ordered a rebuild (MasterPro w/lifetime warranty) from O'Reilly auto parts, was only $152. I pulled the original first and took it in to avoid a $90 core. Average backyard mechanic can swap this out, but don't go in through the top.

You have the slack adjuster screwed all the way down? I thought that was dangerous to do?

I went to the Auto Zone to get replacement gear box. He asked me two questions, is it a 32 or 36 spline shaft and does the truck have a Mono Beam axle? I counted the splines and it has 9 splines side by side then a gap (missing spline) then 9 more, gap, 9 more, gap 9 more. So i am assuming this is a 36 spline shaft. How do I know if the truck has a Mono Beam axle?

I believe the Dana 60 is monobeam axle. The f250 had a ttb Dana 50 (twin traction beam)

Ive seen on other videos either a ratchet strap or bungee to the brake pedal contraption to hold it..

Are there torque specs for all those bolts or do I just torque gun the shit out of them. Also what type of grease should I use for my tie rods?

I'm pretty sure it is 32. The NAPA website only gave one choice when I entered the vehicle information. It shows both boxes until you add 4X4 then it drops to the one choice. Thanks for watching.

Google the serial number written on your pitman arm. It will tell you. My 2000 6.8l had 36

Any air in the system will come out of the fluid in the pump reservoir. I had to top mine off about a week after installing the steering box. Murk em's comment is correct, flushing the system is recommended and the part's warranty is probably contingent on the system being flushed. I had previously installed a new pump and hydro-boost unit because of leaks. The box was replaced for a leak, so I wasn't worried about damage from contamination because of a part failure.

@Ky Christell no it’s 32. 99-2000 are 32 spline. 01 and on wards are 36 spline.

i found it a bit easier removing the fender well instead of thhe stuff from up top, good video though
