Truck on the Tracks - Yes, Ashland!

Ойын-сауық

Ashland claims another victim on December 28, 2018. This time, a pickup turns north on to the tracks, and just keeps going and going… Once again, all’s well that ends well.

In some parts of Europe they have guards that rise up out of the pavement and stay up as long as the gates are up. Once the gates come down poles go up and they prevent cars from going on tracks. I realize that Amtraks often block the street, that can be addressed as well.

Ashland council could install level crossing gates , like we have in UK, they don,t go up or down , they stay in place over rails, when train approaches they swing over road preventing vehicles from driving round them thus eliminating any accidents. train passes swing back over rails.

I think there should be a second set of gates at locations where this frequently happens. These gates would be across the tracks (as opposed to the road). They would normally be down, and have appropriate signage (“STOP”, “DO NOT ENTER”, “YOU AIN’T A TRAIN, SO STAY OFF THESE TRACKS” etc) train comes along, the regular gates descend normally, then these new gates go up. Might prevent an accident.

I now understand why cars keep making this mistake. That looks like an extremely awkward intersection. For the truck to turn left like he wanted, he would have to almost drive into the oncoming traffic across the railroad. That, and all the lights because its night, are probably what make drivers think the track is the road.
